Ok, I got a bit mad about a post on FB by a friend of mine. She was saying how all Texans are awful and the US would be better off getting rid of all of us. Come on! Would she like it if I made generalizations about all New Yorkers or all Jewish people or all people of any race, color, religion, state they live in etc. No! She would be Pea Livid about it.
Can't people realize that about half the people in the country believe one way and half the other but we are ALL people and all Americans and all have the right to be treated with respect! |

Oh I hear ya, I'm from Jersey. Sure, right now the focus is on Jersey Strong and all the truly great attributes that run deep through Jersey. And Lord knows we're not perfect, as a few too many reality shows reveal some warts, but while those depictions may not be inaccurate for who stars in them, most Jersey people are uniquely wonderful. But for most of my adult life, (thanks in no small part to Jersey Week at Disney, believe it or not) lets just say I couldn't begin to list all of the insulting labels dumped on our state. It's pretty upsetting, especially when it's from friends. I feel like saying, "um, hello, I'm Right here!"
Then to top it off, I'm a Yankee fan. I'm not sure which lump category gets it worse.  | |

I think the proper question is "What isn't wrong with Texans." Sorry, just kidding.
Isn't this just something states do? I live in Colorado and grew up making fun of (pretty much in this order): Nebraska, Texas, Wyoming, California
Perhaps it is proximity and then where transplants come from
I remember jokes about selling states to other countries....

I hate it when people generalize like that. Hate hate hate it!!! I had to hide my Godmother on Wednesday morning when she decided to go on a rant about all Obama voters and blah blah blah. I was very tempted to tell her several things, but opted to just hide her instead. |

I dislike and try very hard to avoid speaking in absolutes.
Words like "all", "everyone", "always", "never" are just recipes for trouble in my experience.
It seems that a person practically begs someone to either be offended or to prove them wrong when they start making blanket statements about people/places/things. | |

The generalizations about people from Kansas are not usually flattering. Even the President has weighed in on the stereotype some time ago. I try to remember that if everyone knew the real Kansas, they would all want to live here and we wouldn't be as Kansas anymore. LOL | |

Actually, there are just as many opinions on politics and social issues as there are people. There are a whole range of beliefs that lie in the gap between "far right" and "far left."
it's that whole "the other side believes that . . ." crap that's partly responsible for the mess our country is in today. |

Generalizations work well much of the time, but I am always careful to precede my thought with "in general."
50% of the people is NOT in general.
SOME of the people is NOT in general.
And that is where the difference lies. You are seeing bad generalizers! |

Isn't that something? I went to a Catholic college that was formerly all female. Nuns and priests still make up much of their faculty. I was the only African American person in my program. During one of my classes, Sister Mary asked me for the "black perspective" on a major topic. I told her that I couldn't speak for every African American. I could only speak for myself. |

As to stereotyping, some people do it when they are frustrated, or just plain not bothering to get two sides (or more) of an issue.

Exactly! Look at Houston, we are made up of people from all over the country, every race, religion, personal preference, political preference. It is like any other major city in the US. Everyone is not the same! I was born in Georgia to extremely southern parents, lived in Ohio, went to HS on Long Island and then moved to TX for college and stayed. I also lived in the Philipines and Beruit, Lebanon. I learned everyone is an individual and should be judged that way!

Well, I am one too but I am also believe that everyone has a right to their opinions, values, and beliefs. I don't impose my values on them or judge them for theirs. |
