I was out shopping this morning when a woman approach us in Michaels. She asked if I remembered her... I said I was sorry but I didn't. She then told me I changed her life

It seems that 5 years ago when I was volunteering at a womens shelter I sat and chatted with her. She and her children were being abused by her then husband. I told her my mothers story which unfortunately was very similar to hers.

She said the way I spoke about my mom and how strong she was gave her the courage to leave her husband and make a better life for her children.

By this time I am full out sobbing in the store and my 2 year old keeps asking me why I am crying

I hugged her and told her how proud I was of HER... she thanked me again and we said our goodbyes.

When I got out to the car I just sat and cried and then called my mom to Thank her...she was all confused and thought I was losing it! LOL!

When I finally got the story out my mom was crying.

My mom saved us over 35 years ago...and I can not Thank her enough.

that's a wonderful story. That woman remembered you after all these yrs!

We never know when a part of our 'story' will help or guide someone else.

"A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education."
- President Theodore Roosevelt

On June 28, 1787, as Governor of Pennsylvania, Benjamin Franklin hosted the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, where he moved:

"That henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven, and its blessing on our deliberations, be held in this Assembly every morning."

Franklin wrote April 17, 1787:

"Only a virtuous people are capable of freedom. As nations become corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters."

Benjamin Franklin wrote his epitaph:

"THE BODY of BENJAMIN FRANKLIN - Printer. Like the cover of an old book, Its contents torn out, And stripped of its lettering and gilding, Lies here, food for worms; Yet the work itself shall not be lost, For it will (as he believed) appear once more, In a new, And more beautiful edition, Corrected and amended By The AUTHOR."

That is amazing. Isn't it wonderful how we can change a person's life just by giving something of ourselves to them. You did this by sharing your mother's story and not only helped that lady, but her children and probably her children's children. If you ever feel like you've done nothing in your life, remember this lady and how you helped change the course of hers.

Well, I know something about how THAT lady felt about finding you and being able to thank you. It made HER feel as good as it made you, I know because I was able to thank someone who made a big difference t me.

For YEARS, I wanted to find and thank our former neighbor (she only lived near us for 2 years) for standing up to my verbally (to me, worse to my sister) abusive step-monster(father). My mother never defended me but when this lady was around, she did NOT let him talk to me and about me like I was a junkyard dog. She was always inviting me and my sister over frequently (sf HATED that and complained that we were "bothering" her) and when her grandchildren came to visit, we were told to come and stay.

For so long, I wanted SO bad to tell her how much it meant to me that a grownup made me feel special and worthy. I'd been searching on the internet but couldn't find her. A chance conversation with someone back home got me her phone number. I was able to call her and thank her TWO weeks before she died at the age of 84. I have two things she gave me and I smile every time I see them.

Anyway, I'm glad you were there when SHE needed you so bad and glad that you were able to find out "the rest of the story" and it turned out so great!

Fantastic story, I was teary just reading it. This just proves how words can and do impact so much on someones life. That silly old saying "sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me" is so wrong. Wrong words can and do hurt, but the right ones can help and give courage, as your words did for this lady.

In just a few minutes of chatting, you gave this lady the courage to make a better life for herself and her kids. And how wonderful that she was able to let you know about it.

If you ever feel like you've done nothing in your life, remember this lady and how you helped change the course of hers.
this ^^ - and no doubt her kids lives too.

You did good Belle.

You didn't just make a difference in her life but in her sons and the lives of all her loved ones. I am so grateful for those who helped me get out of my abusive relationship. I am convinced that had I stayed longer her would have killed me. As it is he strangled me and shook me so hard he caused soft tissue damage to my neck and left bruises where his fingers were. God bless you for volunteering there. And now she will pay it forward.
