I'm not a huge fan or anything, but always thought he was good looking.

Apparently he has lost 30 lbs for his role in an upcoming movie, "The Dallas Buyers Club".

I understand that some actors really get into the preparation for their roles, but that just does not look healthy. Hopefully he's got doctors monitoring him through it.

If that's really him, I wonder how long it takes and how hard it is to get his 'Magic Mike' body back?

Anne Hathaway recently lost 25 lbs for her role in Les Mis, literally by starving herself.

revealing that a cleanse led to her shedding 10 pounds prior to filming, and then over a two week period while the movie was filming, she dropped an additional 15 pounds by eating only two thin squares of dried oatmeal paste a day. "I had to be obsessive about it — the idea was to look near death."

I know the body can be awfully resiliant, but I hope neither she nor McConaughey (or other actors that do extreme weight loss for roles) have any lasting damage from these choices.

I am a huge, huge fan (he is beautiful!) and the current photos are just gross and sad I cannot imagine doing that to a human body for a movie! I really hope it has not taken any kind of health toll permanantly to him (heart/organs).

What's sad (to me) is that his wife is expecting within the next few months and in all the pics of him with his newborn he's going to look horrible!

He's been working on this movie for a while, so hopefully it will be wrapped and he'll be on his way back to a normal weight before the baby is born.

You know what, I understand, that this is his job, and he feels he has to put his 100% effort into his "craft"..... but now, w/modern technology, etc, it's like I think they want that big "pat on the back" from people in their business "Oh wow. You just sacrifice SO MUCH for your craft... " ... blah blah blah...

I find it nonsense. Then again, his life, his bod, his job, whatever floats his boat.

Don't like. But, if he is playing an AIDS patient, he certainly looks the part. Hopefully he isn't ruining his heart or his metabolism doing this.

You'd think that with all the CGI technology advances of today, that they could find a way for him to look skinny without putting his health at risk. I mean, lose 15 pounds, then let post-production add some hollows, bone definition, etc...

If they could CGI out Gary Sinise's entire leg in Forrest Gump, SURELY they can do this...?

I think that many actors that choose to do this feel it gives them an edge in their performance because they can feel the physical weakness, etc.. Isn't that the whole idea behind method acting? Whether or not it truly makes their performances better is debatable, but they seem to feel sure that it does.

I thought they did a fairly impressive job with that on Kristen Stewart in the last Twilight movie. I'm admittedly pretty gullible with stuff like that but I did find myself thinking, "Holy crap! What did she do to herself for this role?!" Then I saw a special on how they did the CGI.

In 1996 before he was really a big ticket star.... Matt Damon lost a s#$t load of weight in the Meg Ryan movie 'courage under fire'. He was all teeth and bones, looked awful.

I heard about that. There are some actors who do some serious things to their body for roles. Some of it does seem pretty unhealthy. Someone beat me to it but I was going to say that I thought Christian Bale was the worst example of it. Watch The Machinist sometimes. It's horrifying how he looks.

First picture is from The Machinist, where he lost over 60 pounds to get down to 121. He wanted to get to 99 but the producers refused to allow it. He apparently ate only a cup of coffee and an apple or a can of tuna each day. And then yes, he beefed up shortly after for Batman.
