A few years ago I gave up my stops at the coffee wagon, to save up a little extra vacation/Christmas money. What comes to mind instantly that you could give up? (not that you need to, but it comes to mind!)

Starbucks.
I definitely need to give up Starbucks.
I'm spending $11.04 there about 3 mornings a week
Now if I could just get myself to actually give it up.

Scrapbooking supplies.
But I prefer to also go the route where I make money. I turn in credit card cashback points in December, as well as take things in to consignment stores.

There are some brand names that I could save on by going with a house or generic product.
I don't plan or try very hard at saving when I grocery shop. Even just switching WHERE I grocery shop would save me 15% MINIMUM. I should do that...

Hmmmmmm...buying orchids I suppose. That's my biggest "hobby" expense. Although I subscribe to the "less is more" philosophy--meaning that I'd rather buy 1 collector's orchid versus 20 NOIDs.
Having said that, I spend mad money on writing instruments/office supplies. I'm like some druggie on crack when buying that stuff. Although I have to say the pen side is somewhat justified, since my hands can't tolerate one writing instrument or the other on any given day, so having a variety on hands is a good thing.
However, who REALLY needs STABILO BOSS fineliners for editing (in 20 colors), or fancy file folders, or 20 billion post-its (that I hoard like a miser) or WASAU ASTROBRIGHTS paper for scratch paper, or the Circa system from Levenger. This is my most shameful "office supply purchase." I use the punch and the Circa Notebooks probably twice per year and I only use it for TWO THINGS only--which is are my productivity/project logs. And, since I started working, I use SOLAR YELLOW WASAU astrobrights. So I buy a ream like every 3 years or so.

I would never give up Nessie. She has her own special spot in the kitchen. She travels with us, even.

Cable t.v. we have all the movie channels & use on demand to rent new ones instead of using something cheaper like Netflix or Redbox. Dh picking up supper 1-2x a week instead of cooking at home, he works late hours & this is just easier and we are talking $25-30 carry out not McDonald's. Could save a bunch there. I could suck it up & drop my unlimited Internet plan on my phone. I never use (always wifi) but AT&T did away with this plan & I was grandfathered in as long as I keep it. I keep thinking I will need it but is it really worth the $$$ I pay each month. There are lots of other things we could easily live without but these are the big ones that come to mind. |

I started metal-smithing classes last year and there are so many tools and supplies I want/need..... I usually buy at the flea market but my old scrapbook supply habit now looks like kids play compared to the price of my new hobby.
That's my only vice. no Starbucks, no eating out, I pack my lunch, etc. |

If we're talking truly little luxuries, I could give up Starbucks. I usually only stop about once a week anyhow. I do my own fingernails, but i could give up my once-a-month-in-the-summertime pedicures. We don't eat out often, only have basic cable and the like, so it's hard to think of little things to give up. However, there are some bigger ones |

Um, for DH & I, pretty much nothing. We'd have to make the kids give up a luxury, we've already given up all of ours.
I haven't read this thread yet, but I would guess that we have already given up everything others mentioned, or that we never had them to begin with.
The one thing that someone might mention that I would not give up is my internet connection, because I use that to make money. And trying to use the library for that would be very difficult. It would take me at least twice as long if not more to do the same things. | |

Sirius/XM radio. Good thing the credit card they had on file for billing expired when they tried to take my payment this year. It forced me to log in to our account & see what the balance was before I paid it. I was SHOCKED to see that for 2 radios (DH's & mine) it was going to cost $316 for the year. YES, $316!!!
I freaked. And then I called to cancel. Well lo & behold they offered me a better deal & now I'm paying $100 less for the upcoming year than I paid for this one. What a racket!!!
As a side note, I switched to no-name brand coffee a few years ago. This week I splurged on a pound of breakfast blend from The Fresh Market. What a huge improvement in the taste of it. I might have to alternate between no-name & TFM. |
