I feel rather silly calling my dr for a cold, but WWYD for a cold lasting almost 5 weeks?

I wouldn't say I'm miserable, but I am so tired of coughing and blowing my nose! After 3 weeks of this cold, I had coughed so much & so hard I actually broke a rib (resulting in my first ER visit). The coughing stopped for a few days late last week & weekend, but now it's back. It's not a constant cough, but there are times when I cough so hard I have trouble catching my breath and I gag/throw up. This kind of cough lasts for a couple min, and it has happened once or twice a day for the past 3 days or so.

I keep saying "just one more day and then I'll call" and now it's been almost 5 weeks and my rib can't take much more coughing!

So, WWYD?

ETA: Honestly, other than the cough (and my ri, I don't feel "sick." My nose is slightly stuffed/runny, but not so much that I can't breathe out of it. I simply just blow it throughout the day. My chest doesn't seem to be congested. Most of the coughing seem to originate in my throat, like there's a tickle. Sometimes I'll cough up a small amount to phlegm, but there are other times where it seems more like a dry cough.

I would go to the doctor and at least ask for some cough syrup so you can stop coughing.

I would go to the doctor. Coughing so hard you break a rib seems like more than a cold to me.

I coughed for almost 3 months from pneumonia. A friend of mine coughed for several weeks and it ended up being asthma.

I hope you feel better soon!

Having had pneumonia a couple of times... yes.

I go if a cold/cough lasts more than 2 weeks. My body can usually shake it in two weeks, or after 2.5 weeks my body gives up and lets pneumonia take over my lungs (bad times).

Yes! Last time that happened to me, I had bronchitis and a severe case of sinusitis. I needed an antibiotic to kick both.

I hope you feel better soon .

Yes,please do that. The coughing alone is wearing you out. I cough a lot after a cold myself, but try to take something to relieve the distress. At night is when my coughing is worse and I try to sleep partially sitting up. Once I'm asleep I slip down and stay asleep.

Thanks, everyone! I'll call tomorrow morning for an appt.

I do take Delsym for the coughing, since that's what the ER dr recommended. After I broke my rib, I took it every 12 hours (per the dosage). Then I only took it at night for a couple nights. Last night was the first night I used it in 4 nights or so.

A "cold" lasts a few days, MAYBE a week.

What you have is lingering effects (congestion) from your cold. At this point, I'd be very surprised if you didn't have bronchitis. I know what I'm talking about -- I get bronchitis a couple times a year. Last year and the year before, I got pneumonia. It was EXHAUSTING. I felt like utter crap because I was so run-down and tired. It took a couple rounds of antibiotics to get it OUT.

Definitely call. When you're coughing so hard you broke a rib, you need more than a cough syrup.

I make a dr's appt a cold lasts longer than 10 days. My aunt & a coworker's wife died of pneumonia after suffering for more than 10 days with what they thought was a cold.

In both cases they had bacterial pneumonia. They were young. My aunt 40 & coworker's wife, in her early 30s.

I can't imagine going as long as you have with the symptoms you describe w/out seeing a dr.

I could have written your post back in August. I'm still coughing and snotting, which means it's been 20 weeks for me. I have taken antibiotics and traditional Chinese medicine with a slight improvement from the 2nd antibiotic about 3 weeks ago but now reverting back to the cough. Please see the doctor and tell me what's wrong with me.

Honey, it's time, past time. Please, for your sake and others around you, go to the dr.

If you aren't resting and getting better, do yourself a favor and get to the doctor! It just isn't worth it turning into something else.

I don't run to the doc for every little thing but if something lasts for more than a week, yup, I would be getting an appointment.

Goodness yes! I would have called a few weeks ago. You could have something much worse and if it is bacterial, it needs antibiotics to get those bugs gone!

Our doctor just told us that if a cold lasts 2 weeks come see him. Less than that just self-treat cuz he won't give us antibiotics for it anyway.

I went to the Minute Clinic on Tuesday after a cold that's lasted two weeks. (and I still can't shake.) Sure enough, full-out sinus infection and bronchitis. That won't go away on it's own. Definitely make the appointment.

I would say if it's been almost 5 weeks it's not a cold. It's good that you made an appointment.

A cough lasting 5 weeks needs to be seen. That's far too long for it to be simply a cold.

And this:

I could have written your post back in August. I'm still coughing and snotting, which means it's been 20 weeks for me. I have taken antibiotics and traditional Chinese medicine with a slight improvement from the 2nd antibiotic about 3 weeks ago but now reverting back to the cough. Is way beyond time to see the dr. I see you've been on antbx twice--did anyone do a chest X ray? Check your sinuses? Try another doctor. I have always gotten excellent care from our local Redi-Med, but of course maybe you tried that. In any case, 20 weeks is far too long for that. Almost FIVE MONTHS???

Colds last 7-10 days. If it's not gone in 2 weeks, that is when the Dr wants to see me. You could just have the residual cough from your cold, but I would def go in just in case
