4 dead, 17 injured after train hits veterans parade float in West Texas

This was on the news earlier and I can't stop thinking about it. I can't even imagine the panic and horror seeing that train coming. Those poor people were sitting on chairs on the open flatbed trailer and some were in wheelchairs. How horrifying.

The float was among two flatbed tractor-trailers carrying veterans and their spouses. Police said the first truck safely crossed the railroad tracks, but the second truck’s trailer was still on the crossing as the train approached.

“The train honked its horn, but the 18-wheeler could not go anywhere because of the other one being right in front of it,” said Daniel Quinonez, who was in traffic that had been stopped by sheriff’s deputies to allow the parade to pass.

How does something like that happen? They had police there to stop awfull!!!

Even with the snark, trolls and spelling police you are a great group of ladies!

That is such an awful thing to happen! My thoughts and prayers go out to that community!

When they had the local Memorial Day parade this year, the thought crossed my mind what would happen if one of the tractor/floats got caught on the tracks. And a train did go through during the middle of the parade.

How does something like that happen? They had police there to stop awfull!!!
Parades go very slow, and sometimes it has to stop momentarily. The float should never have been driving over the train tracks until there was enough room after the last float. There probably wasn't enough room to maneuver around the float ahead of it, or back up because of a float behind it. So sad, and so easily avoided.

I feel for the poor guys in the cab, the crew who could do nothing to stop it. They have to live with seeing that.

I do not get why they were allowed to be on the tracks until they could cross the tracks safely and have enough room on the other side for the whole vehicle?

This happened here, where I live. It's the most tragic thing that's ever happened here, I think. Our whole community is in shock. I don't know what all has been reported on the national news, but our community has come together in a most unbelievable way. The blood bank had to turn people away last night after 100s turned out to donate blood. They're calling in extra help today to try to accomodate as many as possible. There are numerous groups around town who have opened their doors for the families of the Veterans, and also collecting money for them for their mounting expenses. We've all been in tears since last night. Myself and my co-workers had just watched the parade go by our building, and we waved our flags and cheered for these veterans. They deserve to be honored.

My husband was one of the officers on the scene helping out. He's pretty shaken by it all, and he's not shaken easily. He said it was really bad.

Please keep these families, law enforcement that was involved as well as the medical staff at the scene and at the hospital in your prayers. They all need it right now.

I know it is a horrible thing, but I laughed when I read your title because I was imagining a train on a float (like on a river) and having an accident.

A sad night for all. Unfortunately it should never have happened. Never ever stop on RR tracks. Trains just cannot stop.

I don't even have words. DH is calling army buddies today to see if any of our friends are involved in this tragedy.

I heard about this on the Today show this morning but they never said what exactly happened.
I don't get it... I don't understand how someone would start crossing RR tracks without enough room to completely clear the tracks. Of course, I wasn't there, I wasn't in the driver's situation so I don't mean to sound as if I'm judging him.

So, so sad.

Saw this last night as it was breaking news. So so sad. Prayers have gone and continue to be said for all involved.

That is hometown for my husband. Well, he's from Stanton but close enough. He was on the phone with his dad last night trying to see if they knew anyone but they hadn't released any names. You know the first instinct is to help somehow. It is such a terrible tragedy.

What a horrible tragedy

I don't understand how someone would start crossing RR tracks without enough room to completely clear the tracks.

I see this happen every day. Literally. Of course, not with parade floats, but I have to cross train tracks on my way to work - they cross the road at an intersection. It's clearly marked for cars to stop behind the tracks, etc, but people don't pay attention. Every day I see people pull up onto the tracks while waiting for the light to change, waiting to turn left on the tracks, etc.. People are idiots and even the ones who are trying to avoid stopping on the tracks often are not far enough across them and the rear of the car would be hit by a train if one were to go through.

I see this daily but it still shocks me that so many people are so careless around train tracks. It's just tragedy waiting to happen.
