Hostess and union agree to mediation which will avert liquidation

Hostess Brands and the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers' International Union agreed to mediate on Monday, according to a tweet from CNBC. The agreement will reportedly prevent a Hostess liquidation, which the company announced Friday could be imminent.

And that's a good thing. People going back to work. Now I don't have to worry that I didn't get one more Snow Ball.

Funny thing. I haven't had one in years, but the prospect of never getting to eat another one put me into a marshmallow Snowball funk!

I think it kinda help that everyone and the brother wiped out the stores. that = great sale numbers. They had a great Ideal and ran with it.

HERE is another article on it. The judge is going to mediate for them tomorrow. They could end up back in liquidation on Wednesday. Interesting that the Baker's union has not returned Hostess CEO's calls for a month.

I understand. I eat a Twinkie about once every two years, but the idea of never having another one just made me sad!

There are some in our vending machine right now, but they are made by Mrs. Freshleys?? Flowers Bakery? I didn't keep up with the list of brands under Hostess, but it's the exact same product, and I had one this morning ... I felt bad for them, sitting in the vending machine, looking all pink and fluffy and coconutty ...

I hope everything works out.

Well shoot guess I can't sell my golden box of Twinkies now.. shoot.. LOL

I actually did purchase a box, my kids never had a Twinkie.. so I brought the box home and told everyone NOT to eat them, as I was gonna make some money.. LOL.. that lasted about 30 seconds before everyone dived into the box.

Oh well, never mind. If the Ding Dongs are still going to be available, the great need to have them is gone. Funny, how that works.

I do hope they work something out and stay open so employees can keep their jobs and hopefully their pensions. I might have to purchase some Ding Dongs from time to time to help support the workers.

I commented to my husband the other day about this massive surge of sales for Hostess with the possibility of no more snack cakes. I was like.. "When do you think Hostess has EVER sold all of their products in a 3 day period?" lol... I'm glad that there is hope around the corner. They might not be good for you, but they are a HUGE part of Americana.

Surprise! :::: eye roll ::::

I'm happy for the workers, especially all those who peripherally would have lost their jobs despite not actually working directly for the company and therefore not in the union that's doing the negotiating. Of course, even members of the union sometimes have little say in the matter and are equally caught in the crossfire.

I hope mediation is successful and that the company can turn it's self around...they need more than an agreement with the Baker's Union to thrive again.

I hope it works out for the non-union workers who weren't involved in the mess. I don't feel bad at all for the upper level management who gave themselves huge raises while going into bankruptcy proceedings and then blamed the union.

I agree with this response comment from one of the links above.

I’m not interested in defending what was not a good overall business model, management at Hostess failed, no argument. However, labor made a choice not to keep their jobs. Own that. They had a choice, management offered a solution to keep them on the payroll at $x/yr, labor CHOSE not to take it. This was not a one-sided one-dimensional failure.

People can talk about the bad decisions of Hostess management all day long but the final closure was due to the Baker's Union workers not going back to work. The Teamster's union wanted them to have a secret ballot vote of the Baker's Union members and the Baker's union refused. They only had a voice vote at union halls. The Baker's union does not get a pass on the closure of Hostess. They definitely played their part. Would Hostess ultimately failed anyway? Maybe. Would they have been able to come out of bankruptcy? Maybe, Maybe not.

Maybe mediation with the Bankruptcy judge tomorrow will work.

Another great role model for American business and the treatment of their workers versus their executives.

I hope the Union doesn't offer too many concessions and that the workers will still make a decent living, good benefits and a pension plan that the executives can't get their hands on.

The Bankruptcy Judge isn't going to let one side take advantage of the other, so I hope it works out for the workers.

I hope it does work out and they are able to keep production going in the US. The news stories floating around the news today was suggesting that the company recipes could be sold. Also that the company could move production south of the border. I would imagine in a situation like this the union employees would lose but the non union employees might find employment with the new corporation. Not ideal but maybe a solution. I hope the courts can work out the best deal. Long live the Pink Snowball.

from what I read it is the Judge who decided this needed to go to mediation rather than liquidation. I say good for the judge, now if they can reach some sort of an agreement is another matter...I hope so.

I spoke with EX husband this morning. He works for Hostess as a route driver and from their side, it doesn't look promising, so I wouldn't devour all the Twinkies just yet. The Teamsters union made quite a few concessions, but the Bakery union did not, so unless they can come to a compromise.......
