I'm moving to a new place this week, and have been experiencing horrible insomnia due to the stress of packing and just the transition in general (IMO).

This is a good move for me. I am very much looking forward to it, but yet cannot shake off the nerves and insomnia that is plaguing me

As I laid awake yet again last night, I started counting how many times I have moved in my life. From memory I can count 30! (although I know I am forgetting a few). Growing up was very unstable and we obviously moved a lot! That trend continued for me into my early twenties.

When my DS was born I was determined to not constantly uproot him. Consequently, I have lived in my current place for the last 18 years (an unprecedented milestone of longevity). I think this is part of my problem. I haven't moved in so long now, that it is shaking me up.

I guess I needed to vent a bit I'm 48. So basically I have moved 30+ times for the first 30 years of my life, and lived in 1 place for the last 18 years.

How many times have you moved in your life?

I have been very fortunate in that I grew up (18 years) in the same house, it wasnt until after my DH and I got married that we started moving around. He was in the military so I knew what I was in for. Even so we have moved less than a lot of folks we know. I would say I have moved 10 times in my life and will be looking at another one between now and June.

Hang in there...moving IS stressful but you will come out on the other side. ((hugs))

Hm. I only moved once growing up, but I moved every year for six years during college and grad school, then moved twice during law school and three times since then. I don't really conceptualize the moves other than the last two as "moves" because they were pre-kids, pre-house, pre-much-stuff, so weren't as big of a deal logistically. We have only moved once in the past ten years, and I do not intend to move again for at least another 3-4 years and, hopefully, more like 8-12.

I'm coming up with 12. All of those were after I graduated from high school. Two of them were state-to-state moves.

5 times before second grade, but then we stayed put through all of high school (my mom just sold that house two years ago.)

I won't count all the college moves (from the dorms, to this apartment, then that apartment...it was all in the same town.)

10 times since I graduated from high school.

So...a bunch of times. Some of them have involved moving to a town, moving away and then moving back. For example, we lived in Sacramento, CA twice and are on our second stint in the Seattle area.

We have often asserted and we affirm it yet again that no fact in history is better attested than the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. It must not be denied by any who are willing to pay the slightest respect to the testimony of their fellow men. That Jesus, who died upon the cross, and was buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea, did literally rise again from the dead. (excerpted from Dance Your Shoes Off, Second Baptist Church)

18 times. I included moves where I stayed for at least a few months. There were some that I knew when I moved there, I would not be there long. For instance, after I got hit by a tornado, I knew my initial move is not where I would stay once everything was straightened out but it did require me to pack everything I had and move it and then move it again a few months later when I got settled in a new place. When my parents split, we moved into my grandparents apartment. They were in the process of building their house and we would be moving with them to the house so again, we knew we wouldn't be there long.

Hardly at all.

Lived in the same house until I went off to college.
Lived in 5 different houses/dorm rooms in college in 5 years.
Moved back in with my parents.
Half lived with them and Joe.
Moved in with Joe, moved once together, eventually got married.
We have lived in three different houses together (moved in 1999 and 2005).

I think I've moved 27 times. Maybe more if I am forgetting some. My childhood was stable, it was married life that was unstable. Partly due to being a military family but also partly due to my ex's discomfort with being "stuck"

I've moved a couple of times since our divorce but each move has been toward better living conditions and toward more permanance. I've gone from living in a homeless shelter to living in a home I own with my son. I'm in a place now I can see living for the rest of my life. I hope I get to!

Three times:

From my parents' house to the one-bedroom apartment DH and I lived in when we were first married.

From the one-bedroom apartment to a two-bedroom apartment in the same complex.

From the two-bedroom apartment to the house we live in now. We've lived here for 13.5 years.

10, including moving from one house to another in the city where I currently live. I've lived here for 23 years, but in two different houses.

I'm 50. Most of my moving happened between birth and age 7.

About 20, both single and married. Our current location is the longest I've spent anywhere since graduating 25 years ago, just over five years now.

We're also in the middle of probably the biggest transition we've had since DH and I married. We just don't know where we're transitioning to. It changes everyday (it just changed again only an hour ago), and the novelty is beginning to wear off. I almost miss having the military tell us where we'll be living and when we'll be going.

Good luck to you, OP, and hang in there .

Not counting dorm moves in college, 12 times. 8 of those as an adult. I've lived in this house for 7 years, and that is the longest I have lived in any place as an adult. I think moving gets harder the older you get--you have more stuff and get more entrenched--and more tired! I'm not surprised this move is shaking you up, but I hope it will be an easy move and that you'll love your new spot!

I had to add this about my grandmother. She grew up in one house, lived there till she was 23 and got married. She and my grandpa moved into a house about 14/ mile down the road from her parents' house, and they lived there for 65 years. So she moved once in her whole life, and lived on the same road for 88 of her 90 years. (She spent the last 2 years in a nursing home.) I have always thought that was amazing.

In childhood before 18yo probably 18-19 times. Being a child of 2 divorces and Father\step father who worked for the airlines..we moved a lot. It was really hard on me.

After 18yo twice. Out of my parents home when i got married and DH and I have live in 2 houses in 20 years. The longest is now. We have been here for almost 11 years.
What I lacked in stability as a child..we gave our kids.

This sounds like my experience Kristen. I went to 17 schools growing up (12 of them by the 5th grade).

This thread is both enlightening and reassuring. We certainly are a nomadic society. So many peas, and so many moves.

I appreciate the good thoughts I am very excited about the move. Funny thing is I will be moving again probably sometime in the summer...hopefully that wont be so hard, now that I am breaking the ice with this move. And I see more moves in my future, as I know I want to retire to Hawaii someday, with possibly a few years in Europe before settling down to island life

10 times. The first 3 were as a child under age 3 and I don't remember. The next 7 are post college apartments and houses with BF/DH (4 pre-marraige moves and 3 post-marraige moves.)

The moves seem to get more complex each time. We have more and more furniture and stuff each time. We also have 2 kids now...so that ups the complexity a bunch!

ETA - I didn't count moving into college dorms because I didn't move everything. That adds an extra 4 moves.

From memory I can count 30!

Same here. Moved a ton of times. My sister is the same.

But since my husband and I bought our first house 11 years ago, we haven't moved since and really don't see us moving for years. (although every spring I have the itch to pack up everything) LOL

Edited to add.. moving mostly in my youth with parents....probably 12-18 of those with them. Then six times with my husband. The other misc times when I lived on my own...

I think DD and I counted 20 or so when I was talking to her about where I had lived, etc.

I lived in the same house for the first 18 years of my life, and have been at the same address now (can't say same house because we built a new house at this address, LOL) for the last 10 years.

So from age 18 to 35 is where all of that moving 20 times occurred.

Majority of it from 18-30, apartment moves, moving from MA to ME and then to MA and then to TX and then to ME and then to NH and then to RI and then to ME again - moving out of the house, getting married and divorced and then remarried and then buying land and building a house - all moves that required packing so I should rightly be an expert (for which I am not) and have no anxiety whatsoever about it (for which is also not true).

So - packing and transition is stressful - allow yourself to own it - do what you can each day and do what you can to destress in the evening before bed to unwind - bath, wine, vent to us, whatever does it for you -

Just know you are not alone. Packing sucks. Forget the "F" word, PACK is a four-letter word in my family!

3 times. We moved from living in the country to an apartment when I was 6 1/2, to a house in a city when I was almost 9. I lived there until I got married at the young age of 20.

I've lived in 18 different places over the 50+ years of my life, in 10 different cities/towns and 5 different states. However, only 5 of them were houses that I view as "permanent" homes. The rest were a series of dorm rooms and apartments that I knew I would be in for a couple years or less.

I have moved 19 times total. 6 of those were as a kid and the rest as an adult. That doesn't include the short term moves like when we first moved to Texas as a kid we lived with my grandparents and then when we moved to Florida we stayed at a campground for like 2 months until we found a house.

My husband is military, so that is why we've moved so much as adults. We have at least 2 more moves coming up in the next 5 years. We are so used to moving, neither one of us are sure we want to settle down.

Oh wow. It's hard to say for the first six years of my life. I'm not sure I can remember properly. And since my parents were divorced that added more apartments/houses that I lived in.

Ok, added it up. I've lived in sixteen different apartments or houses. Same house for the last fourteen years. Most of those moves were my first six years with my mom after she and my dad divorced. And then a couple more with dh before we bought our house.

All of these were in the same general area except one which is a little over an hour away.

22 moves for me.

I moved around a lot between 18-25. Even though I've lived in 3 different homes in this area it's the longest stretch of time I've ever lived anywhere, including my home town. I've been here since 1980, so 32 years.

The worst move for me was when I had to move by myself, while my dh was working out of town, I had a 2 year old and was 8 months pregnant with #2. misery!!

13 moves for me - including 2 international moves.

I only moved once whilst growing up, and I was a baby so don't remember it. Then stayed in the same house until I went off to college. At college I moved twice a year, for 3 years.

Since being married I have moved 7 times, which for a military spouse is very little. But when we move, we move big... Scotland to Gibraltar in 2000 then back to Scotland in 2004, and Scotland to Florida in 2012 The other times we moved was local to the air base, getting a larger married quarter and then moving out of quarters into our own house. And I think the most stressful moves have been the shorter distances....

I moved once when a kid, from Oregon to Washington. Then I moved to Minnesota for college, then back to Washington. I lived in three different places in my hometown as a young single adult. Then my now-husband and I moved to La Conner, WA. Then we moved to the Oregon coast for 10 years and lived in two different places (one for 1 year, one for 9 years). Then moved inland to the Portland area where we are today.

So... nine total times in almost 40 years. I hate moving.

I'm up to 35! And think there's a move or three I'm forgetting.

Moving is no biggie for me, except for the work involved. I've moved to New Zealand a couple of times (had 2 kiwi kids), back to Perth, over to Sydney, now in Canberra.
Life is too short to stay in one place! I want to live in France! That would be awesome.

More times than I could count. My dad was Air Force when we were kids. As an adult I have moved probably about 6 times. I'm pretty good at packing and unpacking.

14. My dad was in the Air Force so we moved around a bit when I was a kid.
