I am planning a trip with some other families. I know they are going to want to spend hours and hours sitting on the beach. I just don't find that fun. I like walking on the beach. I like sitting on a deck looking at the beach. I like being on the beach when it is cloudy and cool. I just can't stand sitting there sweating and baking (and the Pacific is too cold for me to swim in). I will do it for a while because ds loves it, but not my idea of a good time and I try to limit it to a couple of hours at a time.

Am I some kind of freak of nature?

If you are then so am I. I absolutely love tropical, beachy vacations but sitting on a beach for hours sweating is not my cup of tea at all.

I hate sitting on a beach. Sure I have no problem walking on one for a bit or just enjoying the scenery but sitting there for no reason? Yeah, no.

My idea of a fantastic vacation involves some scenery, some museums and historical sites and lots of restaurants and shopping.

I LOVE the beach and I LOVE sitting on the beach when I am at an all-inclusive where the cabana guys and girls are coming to the beach to take drink orders. LOL I do not care as much for the Pacific side though. I like being able to get in the water and the Pacific is too cold for me.

I can sit on the beach for maybe part of an afternoon, if I can sit in some shade, but that is about it....not my kind of fun.

You are not alone.

Can you suggest a variety of things to do so there is at least one activity a day for you to look forward to during those 'sit on the beach' times?

I hate it too! Sand gets places it never should and I find it in everything for months after a trip. Sight seeing, snorkeling, kayaking, para sailing I am in but sitting on the beach NO THANK YOU!

It's all just nonsense anyway!

I'm a's in our genes to go roll in the sand...and love it

ETA: DH is a born and bred inlander (city boy) and hates getting sand on his feet. If I ever want alone time, all I have to do is say I'm going to the beach, and I know he'll never offer to come with me. Love it!!!

I hate it too. Actually I hate sitting in the sun period.
Our last beach vacation was 2 summers ago and my DH and 2 DDs had a great time. Me not so much. I don't tan I burn so I had to stay out of the sun which meant not going in the water for any length of time (Gulf of Mexico- not cold but just right) so I sat under an umbrella on a towel on the sand (SAND!) and sweated my a$$ off. Not my idea of a good time.
I told them I won't do another week at the beach without 'something' to do during the day. I'm not sitting on the beach (or by the pool) anymore!

Yeah, I used to be more tolerant when I was younger. I think I even enjoyed it. Not so much anymore.

Dh knows that driving down and driving back up, he has to appease me with some wine tasting and some antiquing, so there will be things I enjoy too. I also told him that I cannot and will not sit on the beach for hours and hours and hours. I'm thinking three hours is my max, and that's rather generous of me I guess I can always go for a walk for part of that time.

I'm sitting with Gritzi! I the beach! However, I don't tolerate sun exposure very long, so I take an umbrella or a tent - and I'm as happy as can be, in my chair, reading and sipping sweet tea! or something a little stronger!

I am a born and raised Californian and I do not like sitting on the beach for hours at a time. I don't mind sitting on a deck overlooking the beach, I don't mind walking on the beach or the pier or around a beach town.

Do you have to sit there? Can you meet them at the beach later in the day?

I've just never understood laying in the sun. Walking early in the morning and late in the up shells, enjoys a nice breeze, letting the wave splash my that. Love the seafood on the coast, too. Sitting in a nice hotel with a balcony with shade and reading a good book while looking out over the ocean...nice.

Hot sun, sand in my thank you.

I wish I could meet them, but instead of booking a hotel on the beach for almost the same price, they booked something in a town about half an hour away. One car for my family on vacation, and it would be hard to find them. I can go for a walk but can't really leave the area on my own.

I'll survive, just venting. Thanks.

I was born & have lived my entire life in Southern California. Not a fan of sitting on the beach or in the sun. I love seeing the ocean & walking on the beach when it's not hot. I'd feel landlocked not being able to go to the beach fairly easily.

I'm not a beach sitter either. I love resorts/hotels that are on the beach but that have pools as well that way DH can take the kids to play in the sand while I lounge at the pool, and they can come back and swim in the pool (much safer to me).

Nope. the beach, the sand, the ocean...all of it. Give me a shady umbrella, a good book, my camera, or a sketch pad, and a cold drink and I'm set. I could spend all day, every day at the beach.

I don't mind the beach so long as I've got my beach chair, my big umbrella, beach tarp and a cooler full of water and food and I'm good. I like being able to sun and then hide away from it if I'm getting a little too pink. I also like to sit and read and just relax while the kids are playing in the water or making sandcastles.

The one thing I *DO* hate about the beach is the blistering hot sand that burns the bottom of my feet. Yeouch!

I don't really like the sun for that matter.

I can take sand or leave it.

We prefer to do things on vacation. See the sites. Visit museums. Go shopping. Do active. Do stuff.

I can sit around in my backyard for free.

This is me, too. I will take the beach in any way, shape, or form I can get it. For as long as I'm allowed.

I'm befuddled when I see people listening to iPods at the beach. The ocean waves are the best sound ever created. I even listen to them as I fall asleep (there's an app for that!).

Yep! I am there with you. Well...not because I do not like sitting on a beach either. I find it uncomfortable, hot, sweaty, sand gets E.V.E.R.Y.W.H.E.R.E. I like it in the storm and at night, walking along the shoreline. I like it in the morning.

Good luck with figuring it out!

I grew up in Southern California, and as a teen I spent every minute I could at the beach. Getting a tan. Body surfing. Swimming. Getting a tan. Laying around. Reading. Flirting with surfer boys. Getting a tan.
Now I will not even go to the beach if the sun is out. I might be persuaded to go if it's cloudy or maybe rainy. I love to photograph the waves & dramatic skies. But sit on the beach? Not happening.

I am from Maryland, so it's in my genes too!

Our family of 5 (my husband, me and our 3 girls ages 9, 13 and 15) LOVE the beach! We go for a month in the summer and we have a beachfront condo that is the best! We have 2 huge umbrellas to sit under front row to the ocean. We get out by 9:00am and stay out until 5:00pm. We run inside to get lunch and bring it down to the beach. Then after dinner we go back out to the beach, or go to the boardwalk, boat ride, or go out to dinner. We do it every day for 4 weeks! If it rains, I am a grouch! Then when it comes time to leave the beach, I am in tears. I love it! Everything about it!

Right there with you!! My fair Irish skin burns even with high protection. I hate sunscreen, makes me feel sticky and I hate getting sandy. I love to walk and explore but I get bored just sitting around. I don't find it restful and I prefer to visit in the fall and winter! My family has a house on the coast of Maine. I love to visit there and sit on the deck or go down to their little beach with the kids while they explore tide pools and search for sea glass. It's almost always too cold to swim there. tongue:

I hate crowded beaches and I am not someone that can just sit on the beach either. I love the beach but I like to walk on the beach not sit. love to get my feet in the ocean and wet - just did that not to long ago and it was fun. Not a fan of just sitting and sweating though as I don't do the heat or sun very well.

If I was under an umbrella I think I could sit on one for a while and read especially if there were cabana boys to bring drinks . I don't do well with just sitting on vacation. I could maybe do so for an hour or two but that would be pushing it. I do so love the sea air though. There is just something so rejuvenating about it. Oh I I don't want to sit on a towel on the beach - not my idea of fun. I want a chair. I don't mind sand on my feet but I don't want it on or in other parts.

I LOVE the ocean, but I want to sit on a nice shady deck and watch it instead of sitting on a sandy beach.

Also I was raised in the mountains and after awhile the ocean kind of freaks me out. LOL.

I'm totally with you. Everyone think I'm crazy because I hate the beach. I burn easily, so when I think of the beach, I think of slathering sunblock on for 1/2 an hour, sand sticking to me, dragging an umbrella along, sweating, etc. yuck

The only beach I like is an all inclusive Caribbean vacation - where I hang out by the pool rather than the beach, and the pool water is bathtub warm, and the umbrellas are already there, all set up for you

It's lovely in theory, and I will happily set my white noise machine to "ocean waves" or "lake breeze" but since I only have two colors-- marshmallow and lobster-- it's not really my preferred activity. Also, where I live, there are lots of mosquitoes to go with your beach, so... yeah, no. Not really my thang.
