Is it really THAT difficult to simply keep an ashtray in their vehicle and empty that ashtray in the next available trashcan? I will admit that my first thought when I see someone do that is, "what a loser!"

Guess I'll be putting on mine too, a woman I know got a ticket, a fine and she had to pick up trash on the side of the highway after getting caught flicking her cigarette butt out of her window. She was looking for sympathy and she didn't get it from me. | |

Because they don't want to dirty their car ashtrays. Do cars still have ashtrays? My new Toyota Rav4 doesn't.
I don't smoke, I quit almost 10 years ago, but I clearly remember throwing my cig butts out the window. I'm not condoning it, but I did it...I know I did. I also field stripped cigarettes in the military and stuffed them in my pockets (back in the day when you could smoke during training). |

Oh yeah. Nothing like having a still glowing butt come up at you because the jerk in front of you decided to throw it out the window. Not to mention the wildfires started.
I hate that I have to pick up cigarette butts around my yard and driveway. I know several neighbors that smoke, but I'd like to know which jerk thinks it's okay to use my yard as their trashcan. |

And a lot of cars don't have ashtrays anymore, but you can buy car ashtrays that are in the shape of a cup that will fit in a cup holder. There really isn't an excuse. |

It is tacky and rude.....and dangerous, but to ask why? I don't think a smoker will answer it. I did it when I was a smoker, but why? probably because I didn't want the butt in my car. Again, not condoning it, just trying to give you an answer why.

I think they just don't see it as trash. They probably grew up watching parents or whomever throw their butts down and ground them out with their shoe.
I remember a friend of mine who smoked talking to me awhile back and she was saying how impressed she was with her boyfriend's car because it didn't smell of smoke. He told her that it was because he didn't use his ashtray; he always threw his butts out the window. She thought that was a brilliant idea and started doing it herself. I just looked at her aghast like "what???". | |

When I was in the military and we were training, you could smoke during breaks, but you couldn't toss your cigarettes on the ground after you were done, you had to "field strip" them...once you smoked it, you put it out and you stripped out the filter and paper from what was left of any tobacco and you put the remains in your pockets for disposal when you were near a trash receptacle. |

Because most cars don't have and ashtray and the butts stink up the car even worse than smoking in it. I don't do it because I do worry about fires but not as much about littering. | |

My parents did this for years. When I started riding a motorcycle I was almost lit on fire from a hot red butt flying out a window at me. After I told them about it, they now keep them in the car to toss later.
You never know where that butt is going once you fling it out eh window. It was scarey trying to slow down, pull over and get tht hot butt out of my clothing. |

because smokers are selfish. Yes, so are a lot of other people, me included, but the wildfire danger - or the potential of it going into the car behind - which has happened to us - especially ticks me off.
off topic a little bit, but this blogger that I came across the other day goes to her local beach and collects litter. Apparently butts are one of the biggest causes of litter in the world?? |

And cigarette butts are not bio-degradable, so don't think you are doing the environment a favor when you throw it out the window of the car. If you are considerate enough to go out of your way to throw it in a receptacle in public, please think about being considerate enough to get a car ashtray and dump it in the proper place(not in the parking lot like I've seen other inconsiderate people do). |

Why do people throw anything out of their car window? I see people do it all the time. Ciagarettes, fast food wrappers, bags of trash...
The ones that get me are the ones who empty their whole ashtray out on the ground from where they are parked in the parking lot. Selfish pigs.
And I smoke, and I don't throw them out of the window, I use the ashtray, which I empty at hom.

Oh FFS, I didn't say it was right! OP asked why, and I was explaining the thought process as a smoker.
And I find smoker shaming irritating, so we are even.

My SIL had their truck written off due to an inconsiderate smoker who tossed his/her lit cigarette butt out their window. It smoldered in the bales of hay in the back of truck when they were bringing them from one field to another and finally set their truck on fire. Neither of them have ever smoked in their lives.
A coworker almost set his own car on fire when his lit cigarette butt blew back into his car back seat. Luckily he was still in the car when the back seat started to smolder. He figured it was a sign to start using an ashtray. It fits in the cup holder.
There is no excuse IMO. I've never thrown anything out my window - not gum, not sunflower seeds, nothing. I would like to think I am the norm, not the exception. |

I don't get it either. We've had several major wildfires around here in the last 9 years & people still do it. I don't even get why people would need signs telling them not to do it whether it's due to increased fire danger or just common courtesy/sense. |

People throw their butts out the window for the same reason they don't return their shopping carts. They don't think of themselves as being rude and inconsiderate, just entitled. However, in my mind, they are being rude and inconsiderate...and lazy. No one is entitled to make a mess for someone else to clean up or have to look at. JMHO | |

I'm in the "hate it" camp. But, it didn't dawn on me until a few years ago when my kids were learning about water run-off that all those butts end up in our rivers, streams, lakes and eventually our oceans. They never really go away. |

All smokers aren't disgusting and dirty just like all non smokers aren't self-righteous and perfect.
But I'll tell you, when those flaming butts come flying out moving car windows and my window is open, it scares the crap outta me. I hate it. And *that particular* driver/smoker is a dirty, selfish, nasty pig of a person. |

Nobody should smoke in cars the smoke has nowhere to go. It gets into the upholstery lingers and it can make people sick.
So anyone who smokes in a car is deliberately making themselves and their passengers sick.
It's the same reason why people stick their hands into boiling water and then complain about the burns. | |

It has absolutely nothing to do with size. It's a psychological thing, don't try to understand it. And I don't throw out gum either, I put it in a gum wrapper which is in my pocket because I don't throw them out of windows. |

It IS trash. It doesn't decompose. Plus, it contains harmful chemicals that birds and other small animals might eat- thinking it is food. It is harmful to the environment in all kinds of ways. Plus, it's ugly to look at(so is gum- I hate seeing gum all over the sidewalks- and getting it stuck to the bottom of my shoe. So gross!) I wish people would understand that. I dislike litter in general, but cigarette butts are nasty and harmful in so many ways that people refuse to see. |
