And I find smoker shaming irritating, so we are even.
LOL!!
Not every smoker is like that people need to quit paining all smokers with the same brush. There are lots of different personalities in the world and smokers don't all have the same one.
To me grouping all smokers together as a group is just as bad as grouping all black people. It's ignorant, stupid, prejudice and mean. |

I don't smoke and never have. I don't like seeing people doing it but honestly, until this thread I never thought of the majority of the issues that doing it could cause. I admit I've thrown gum out the window a few times.

OK. So some smokers posted and some I'm sure read but maybe didn't post that they didn't think about the environment, didn't look at butts as trash, didn't think about the dangers to passers-by or others in cars who could or have been burned. I hope this means that when you know better you do better.
No need to be indignant and insist it isn't trash, when you realize it is, or that you can't hurt someone else as Dalai said she was burned by an airborne butt.
Ignore the peas saying all smokers are filthy and selfish. We know tat isn't true. That's like saying all peas are harsh and post with no filter.
Please let this be one of those threads that makes you reconsider. Don't toss the butts out your window.
This is very well said and needs repeating. |

I can't work out why people don't think of butts as litter?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And I can't work out why people use paper plates every day, or text at 2am, or not wipe their pee from the toilet seat, or shoot up heroin. A few of us have given or at least tried to give an explanation and yet it's not enough. If you don't smoke you can't even begin to understand any of their thought processes. Just accept that some smokers are assholes and that's that.
Okey doke then, no need to get too wound up

It is disgusting. I'm shocked that there are otherwise intelligent people who did not consider cigarette butts to be trash. And yes, I was a smoker many many years ago and never threw butts out a window.
Over here you are encouraged to report people throwing butts or any other litter out of their cars to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency). There is a hotline to call or an on-line form to fill out. From their website:
EPA's public litter reporting program was an Australian first. It allows people to report anyone they see littering from motor vehicles to EPA. In the 2010-11 financial year, more than 14,000 fines were issued across Victoria.
Being able to report a litterer is an important way for the community to help tackle littering. Each year, around 90 per cent of reports relate to tossing cigarette butts - both lit and unlit - from vehicles. Food packaging, drink containers and poorly secured rubbish are also reported. The types of litter most commonly reported are:
cigarette butts
food packaging
drink containers
rubbish poorly secured to cars.
Any littering from a vehicle or by a person associated with a vehicle can be reported. For example, if a person drops a cigarette butt on the ground and then gets into a car and drives away, we can act against the vehicle owner.
Fines for throwing litter from a car are:
Small item of litter (extinguished cigarette butt and small item of litter e.g. paper, wrappers and food scraps)$141
Large item of litter (lit cigarette butt and large item of litter e.g. fast food packaging, drinks containers, cigarette packets) $282

Simply Lovely,
Totally irrelevant to this conversation, but why is your text showing up purple? I want to type in a fun color! |

If I had the choice between throwing a burning ciggarette butt out in my car, or out of my car, I'd choose out.
I just don't want to go up in flames. | |

My brother and his wife smoke in the car with my nephew right there. It kills me. I wish they'd have quit before he was born but I guess nicotine is more important.
I won't apologize for it. In this day and age I think all smokers are selfish. It causes so many health problems, it isnt worth one fucking drag of a dirty cigarette. | |

I don't know how some people can see it's NOT just littering. It can start a fire. I do feel that it is a selfish act. A very selfish one. I am not saying that the person themselves is selfish but the act certainly is! | |

I also hate it when people are in the drive-thru smoking. I am sorry but my right to BREATHE trumps your right to smoke with your window rolled down. It can literally kill me. And I have had to go to the ER before with a full blown asthma attack. My mom smoked when she was pregnant with me up until the day she died. When I was 16 I had a major asthma attack and she rushed me to the hospital. From that day on she smoked outside. But I always worry about being exposed to that much smoke even though I never chose to smoke. Now scientists are saying there is 3rd hand smoke. Smoke that gets in the carpets and walls. I can't believe in this day and age someone would just toss something dangerous out the window. It's really not fair to others. If someone has a problem with their gas line and runs over your darn cig butts you could kill them. So yah it IS littering and it IS worse than throwing other trash because I don't think an empty bottle of water will cause a fire. For the record though I don't litter. | |
