It is if you plan to take advantage of "freebie" SVG files and those sold thru third parties (like Kerry Bradford), as (if I understand correctly) you need the designer software to convert those files to studio files.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, Peas.

i have my silhouette since march and i decided to buy the designer edition only when i would need it. since now i haven't missed a functionality.

you can open svg files if you first convert them to dxf files. there are many tutorials how to do this.

I don't think you "need" to have it to convert SVG files, but I believe it makes it a lot easier to use them. I have the designer edition and I bought it because I wanted the ability to use everything within the software.

Can anyone reccommend some good Silhouette tutorials for converting svg files? I'm waiting for my Cameo to arrive and I'm hoping to be able to use all the SC DD class cut files - have no idea . . . . any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

i have used this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIKNM969FKc and it worked for me

liannallama, it is 40% off for US customers only. If i want to buy it in my country i'd still pay >64$ and this is too much only for the option to cut svg directly. i know there are some other features, but this is the one i would use.

You can use Inkscape, a free download, to convert svg to dxf or you can open the svg in the free software and trace.
