Cause we need another round of "seriously? did you THINK about how other people might say your kid's name?"

Apparently, I was all wrong for saying the name like "Tahn-yuh" when the child's name is pronounced Tuh-nEYE-yuh

I say tan-yuh but Tuh-nEYE-yuh? That's crazy. She will spend her entire life correcting people or just going by a different pronunciation for the sake of ease

That is the Spanish pronunciation. I went to elementary school with 2 Tania's and both were pronounced Tah nee ah. I've never actually heard the name pronounced any other way.

I would pronounce it the same way I pronounce Tonya. Both (to me) are Tahn-ya (the tahn rhymes with on)

I have a friend whose name is Tonya. She pronounces it Tone-ya. Her Mom is German, maybe that's why.
I've always pronounced Tanya 'Tahn-ya'. Maybe it depends where you live. But that extra syllable in the OP only makes sense if it's spelled 'Tania'. (And even then it sound ridiculous!)

Tania not Tanya

Everyone I have known with both of these spellings pronounced their name Tahn-yah so in my mind, that is how it is pronounced. I know there are people who pronounce it Tan-ya.

i have heard both Tania and Tanya pronounced as TAN-ya or TAWN-ya.

I have only heard Tonya pronounced as TAWN-ya.

tuh-NEYE-ah is totally new to me. And I would guess it's going to be totally new to most people that child meets in their life.

I think Taniya(with optional "h" at the end) would have gone a long, long way in alerting people that this name is its own name separate from the other pronunciations.

Mine is pronounced Tahn-ya as well ('a' is the same sound as Father). I've had people tell me that I spell my name the wrong way. And most pronounce it Tonya, which really irks me.

Every Tanya I know pronounces it - TAH-nya
Tonya - TOHN-ya
Tania - Tah-NEE-yah

This reminds me of a story my friend told me when she got yelled at by a customer. She was filling out a form for her asked the woman her name and she said "Nicole." When my friend wrote it down the woman started yelling that it's spelled "Neekole" and how dumb can she be and not know how to spell names.

Or my friend Chloe who has to tell the Starbucks people every day that her name is not spelled Khloe because she is not a Kardashian. What I'm trying to say is, if you don't want your kids to suffer don't give them normal names but with Kreativ spelling, and if you give them normal names don't do kreativ pronunciation. This is all part of the "special snowflake" epidemic!

if that makes sense. They both would be all annoyed if you got their name wrong.

I hate it when my name is pronounced Tan-yuh. It is Tahn-ya, which is how my mom pronounces it. I have gotten Tuh-nEYE-yuh, too, from a couple relatives, including my dad. I think that's partly a language issue - my dad's first language isn't English.

I do NOT like a hard Tan sound, tho.

-Tania... but people who like me call me `Tang`

Monika - MOH-nee-kah

This just sounds liked English/Spanish to me. I say "Mah-nee-kah" if speaking in English but "Moh-nee-kah" if I'm saying it in Spanish.

Even my name - I pronounce the "u" in Claudia even when speaking English, I just always pronounce my name as it's said in Spanish and not just "Clah-dee-a"
