Do you have a list of things you do not want your family to buy you for Christmas?

My boys would always want my husband to get the popular jewelry that they have a ton of commercials for. I had to tell them no. I can't stand the open heart or chocolate diamond commercials and I do not want any. I prefer classic simple jewelry.

I also have asked close family not to buy me clothes or shoes. My MIL would buy me clothes from the junior dept.

Ditto! I prefer classic EXPENSIVE jewelry, but that doesn't seem to be in the picture this year!

No clothes.
No appliances, unless specifically requested (e.g. Kitchen aid or attachments).
No jewelry over $100 unless it has been discussed.

I'd say these are more "guidelines".

No clothes
No Fire HD upgrade (I'm happy with what I have)
No jewelry every couple of years he lets other people talk him in to violating this one. It's a waste of money. I'm not a big jewelry wearer and there are so many other things I want more.

I had to specifically say "no clothes" because every.single.year MIL would buy me shirts that were HER style, not mine. One year it was a tshirt with a birdhouse on the front. And a bluejean button-up shirt to wear over it (unbuttoned so the birdhouse would show) and the jean shirt had a matching birdhouse on the chest pocket. I can see HER wearing that, but not me. Another year it was something very victorian looking. Again, no idea WTH she was thinking? And another year it was an olive green vest. I don't wear vests and I don't wear olive green. The problem with her giving me clothes, is that she removes all the tags too, so I can't even discreetely return them for something I want. So into the goodwill bag they go.

DH is the only one that I trust to buy me clothes.

Last time I asked dh for clothes, I asked him for something very specific. What did I get? A gray and white horizontal striped knit shirt and pants set. I looked like a sausage ready to check into a prison.
Now what good is that visual without pictures?

LOL! THe clothes thing reminds me of a sweatshirt my grandma bought me for my 18th birthday. It was an old lany thing with a row of ducks in snow. When I went to return it the cashier gave me a guilt trip because she helped my grandma pick it out. My BFF had to walk away because she was laughing so hard.

Clothes! Our first Christmas, DH got me a dress that was awful. As a newlywed, I decided to keep quiet and be grateful. I even wore it to work so he could see me in it. The next time he saw it was in the goodwill bag. We had a good laugh and agreed never again. 22 years later, we still laugh about it!

I usually say no playdoh for the kids (unless it's from MIL because she lets them play with it at her house), but I broke down and broke my own rule this year becase DD#2 really wanted a specific playdoh set. I think I'm going to send it with her to grandma's

My sons and dh's stocking stuffers for me are always scrpabooking supplies. While nice, it is also an easy out. So I told them not to last year. Instead my sons got me hohos and dingdongs. To me that was basically saying: We have no idea what to get you. No food this year either!

I also don't like clothes because they usually are not my style or the wrong size.

No household items.
If it's used to take care of the house, it is not a gift for ME, it's a gift for the house! If you buy me a vacuum, you will DIE!

Really all I want is for someone to actually take a moment to THINK about me and what will make me happy. My true gift is that they actually tried, not what they actually bought me.

My favorite gift in 17 years of marriage is chapstick! I had a favorite chapstick that our local shop quit carrying, I couldn't find it anywhere and was heart broken. I have a lot of preservative allergies so finding a chapstick I can use is hard. DH took the time to hunt it down and bought me a huge stockpile of it. The main thing about that gift was knowing that he loved me enough to invest time into finding what would make me happy rather than buying me some stupid little thing to sit on a shelf (that I have to dust) and calling it a day.

Last year, I gave 15 yo DD a list of things I would like for my stocking...simple things like Chapstick, pens, tape, scissors, etc. Loved it!

DH wants a stocking this year so I better think of what to put in it.

anything from bath and body works. I haven't had to buy shower gel in years. For once I'd really like to have the scent I'd pick for myself. Everyone knows not to buy me clothes or shoes. Household items are ok if I ASK for them.

Not that you get them for Christmas, but I'm also not a huge fan of getting flowers. If my husband gets them for no reason at all, that's ok, but I don't like them as a gift on birthdays or holidays. It's a cop out, uncreative gift. And it dies.

I did forward a gag gift idea to DD that I was thinking of getting for her fiance and I was instructed not to buy it because payback was hell and if I made HER live with it, she was going to make me live with something equally as bad by gifting something awful to my husband.

Point made.

No lotion, jewelry, clothes, or appliances for me. I usually end up giving away lotion because my skin is sensitive and most scented lotions break me out. Same with jewelry, because it breaks me out and I don't wear jewelry or watches.

My husband is a pretty good shopper though, and knows what I like.

It's easy this year, we got a new roof. So a new flannel night gown for me, or pj's for each of us.

The list of what NOT to get gets long. Both of us seem to be too "picky" to others. Most of the time if we need or want something, we just get it. Not hope that someone else will.

I dont have a do NOT buy list. It's the thought that counts.

My dd's have made me jewelry before that I've worn out. The look on their face while I was wearing it was gift enough. I didn't care what anyone else thought while I was wearing it.

BUT when my dh buys me clothes or jewelry he takes me to the jewelry store or favorite clothing store and tells me to pick something out. That's his choice though not mine.

If you go into the store you can exchange it for a scent that you like. I do this quite a bit. Some of the scents really bother me. I have my favorites.

Years ago To help my new SO for our first Christmas/My birthday (my BD is Christmas day) I told him:

No red and black lingerie--hate red and black lingerie
No one piece lingerie--I'm tall it won't work
Please wrap my birthday gift in birthday wrap (I feel kinda cheated by not having a day like everyone else. I thought it was a simple request.)

He got me a black and red teddy and wrapped it in Christmas wrap.

He was so excited about it and wanted me to try it on right away. I went into the bathroom and cried. (We broke up 7 years later after a rough relationship--the guy had no clue about relationships. Why did I stick around for 7 years?)

I've never specifically asked anyone not to buy certain things for me. I should, though.

My MIL is so well-intentioned, but usually gets me a Christmas sweater, or else an old-person sweater. She has made a few good choices here and there, though.

My mom is the same way. I usually get a pair of very unattractive pajamas in mint green with a lot of lace and floral trim.

I'm kidding, though. I can't imagine ever telling anyone (other than dh, maybe) to not buy me anything. I'm not assertive enough.

Most of the time if we need or want something, we just get it. Not hope that someone else will.

Dh and I are firm believers in this approach.

i just buy it myself, stocking and all. it's not as fun as the surprise but i know it's stuff i want, right colour, right size, right price.

we got into the habit because i wasn't working and he was. when he got home from work, i would prefer him there, not shopping for stuff i don't want.

i am always gracious and just say thank you when i receive a gift, but when we are tight for cash, it used to upset me knowing he spent $50 on something i didn't want or need.

Jewelry.
Clothing.
Appliances unless specifically requested.
Candles (love them but prefer to buy them myself)

The only thing I ever tried to return was some diamond earrings my grandmother bought me. She included the receipt so I would "know how much to insure them for." I tried to return them but because she had paid with a credit card, the only thing they would do is give me store credit, and since I don't wear jewelry, that didn't really work for me. Oh, and did I mention I don't even wear earrings?

I don't have a 'do NOT buy' for Christmas, but I have told DH not to buy me diamonds or precious stones (ethics) or lilies when he gets me flowers (I'm allergic).

I did one for my kids this year. I was tactful (I hope) and sent it to all four sets of grandparents even though not all were culprits. One always buys DS huge stuffed animals and he was diagnosed with asthma so he isn't supposed to have them.
I also asked for age appropriate gifts only. I am less worried now that he will hurt himself - like I was that he might choke on the Mighty Beans my MIL got him when he was two, or that he might wrap the thin fishing line type thread on the end of the fuzzy worm around a finger like when he was three. Now it is avoiding the repeat of the Lego set that clearly says 8+ (he just turned 5). She seemed offended but I would rather not spend Christmas Day taking his presents away :/.
I think gift givers should want to give you something you will like, so as long as you can make some suggestions of things you WOULD like, this is totally great.

I HATE Bath & Body Works. With a passion. I'm fairly picky about what I put on my body (except of course there's my other personality who eats crap all day). I dislikes stuff that's overly scented, fruity, chocolaty, whatever craptastic scent BBW has on sale. Anyway, I digress!!!

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmm...........anything with ruffles or dresses. Seriously. If you knew me, you would discover after one nanosecond that I am NOT a "ruffles and bows" type of person. Likewise, I don't wear makeup, or perfume or nail polish.

Really, I'm easy to shop for.

Like, if someone would give me like Wausau astrobrights paper or post-its, or stabilo boss pens/fineliners or CIRCA stuff!!! they would be loved forever! But no one ever thinks to give me office supplies! Boo.

Or grinch stuff! I'm a grinchaholic!!

I'm generally not particular about any gifts, but when a person specifically asks me and I give them a specific idea and specifically tell them what not to buy, and they go and buy that "do not buy" item, that bugs me.

In my extended family, we use to draw names. My uncle drew my name and asked what I wanted. So, with his wife sitting next to him and listening, I explained about this scrapbook kit I had just recently seen at Costco (well within our stated budget and I know they had a Costco membership because we had just run into them there a few weeks before this) but then told them that if they couldn't find it, not to get me anything scrapbooking and then gave them a list of other ideas which also included things like iTunes gift card or Michael's gift card. Come Christmas Eve, I open the gift from them and it is one of those cheesy scrapbook kits from Wal-mart that someone might be a beginner or a child. I was bugged. I mean if you want suggestions, I gave you a ton of ideas so you wouldn't have to think but you go and get the one thing I specifically said not to get That's almost a slap in the face. But then again, this family is like that. One year one of them had my sister and they asked me for ideas. I gave them a bunch of ideas but also told them no bath stuff, she does not like baths. What did she get? A basket full of bath stuff and it looked like it was bits and pieces of other baskets. Nothing matched or was even from the same company.

We don't draw names anymore. We now just buy gifts for any kid under the age of 18

I am difficult to shop for and my husband HATES buying me gifts. So we've come up with a good system. Every year during our summer vacation there is always something that I want to buy from a local shop. We get it. It's put away and I don't look at it until it's given to me. This year it's from Vermont. I'm getting a big ole' cookbook from King Arthur Flour. Can't wait to read it and try it out.

My husband gets a stack of catalogs with items circled, with sizes and color choices all laid out. I obviously don't expect everything I've circled but it gives him plenty of choices. I never have to worry about him getting me a crappy gift because he prefers having a list from me.

I had to tell my MIL to stop gifting me candles, candle holders and bubble bath gift sets. I have a cupboard with every kid of scented candle, seasonal holder and gobs of bubble bath. I LOVE a good bubble bath but it will take me 5 years to get through all of the stuff I have.

I have not wanted anyone to pick out my clothing since I was about 9.

This ^ and No shoes, ever, it won't do them any good they all go back.
No Jewelry, or perfume either, I don't like a lot of scents, and gave my daughter all my jewelry years ago, except for a cross necklace I wear all the time.
I really don't mind household items as long as they are really useful, and not just something I have to dust. I prefer tools, I do a lot of my own home improving, so I don't mind getting power screwdrivers, drills, new pliers, etc...This year I'd like a new mini power saw, with attachments. They also usually get me a gift card for Hobby Lobby, or Michael's, because otherwise they buy me something from there that I already own.

Clothes! My mother in law is constantly buying me horrible clothes that are not at all my style. Maybe my great grandma would have liked them. She bought me a floor length flannel nightgown with ruffles one year and those satin-y slippers. I was 22!!! My husband thought it was hilarious...mostly the look on my face! She has also bought me those socks that were around in the early 90's that had crocheted tops that folded over, grandma arthritis socks and t-shirts that she cut the tags out of?!? I guess so I wouldn't know what size I am!!!
I should mention I'm only 34 now...so this is all stuff she gave me in my 20's!

No chocolate. Seriously.

Family that doesn't know what to get me or doesn't want to ask, always gives me (the fat chick) a gift bag of assorted chocolates and then a small gift card for coffees, or a movie, etc... A whole bag of chocolate - like maybe $100 dollars worth... I don't like chocolate to start with, and I'm the fat one spending 15 minutes unwrapping each and every bar and box of the stuff and having to look excited about it, and all the skinny ones who love chocolate get a nice scarf or book or slippers... I say every year to them not to get me any, I explain why, and say I'm happy with getting a copy of their children's school photos, and that a donation to a charity is such a touching gift, dontcha think? (hint, hint)...

Or at least switch to caramels. I could eat $100 worth of caramels just on the drive home...

The only thing on my list is wool cardigans. My parents love them - they have a favorite boutique where they buy Woolworth sweaters for everyone. Wool makes me break out AND my cats eat it so it's an expensive closet filler. My mom forgets about every other year though so I'll probably get one this year.

No clothes and not jewelry or anything like that.

No expensive scrapbooking tools (like a die cut machine) because I feel like I won't use them.

Nothing too expensive. I am a cheapsake.

DH and I have not quite worked that out.

For instance, I like jewelry, but he always picks out jewelry that is not my style. Doesn't go with the clothing I own.

It's pretty! But I would have to buy a new wardrobe in order to use it.

I LOVE jewelry, but only if it conforms to my taste. Which DH has not a clue about.

So, while I would love to receive jewelry, I have to tell DH no jewelry, because he does not know my taste.

And yes, I've tried leaving a catalog lying about, with circled items, but he doesn't want to get me items I've picked out, because that would spoil the surprise

Electronics! I will let him know when and what I want. But don't assume I want the new IPhone because I DON'T! He is an elctronic geek and seems to think I need to be too.

I agree with the previous poster about using birthday wrap - my birthday is Dec 7, and STILL I get (mostly from in-laws) Christmas-themed cakes and presents. Mind you, I LOVE Christmas - but birthdays are different! But at least they always remember me, so I shouldn't complain.
