I had the most frustrating afternoon at Michael's today. I need to vent to someone, and I know that the peas will understand.

Last Saturday, I went for the 70% off albums and all was well. I knew that I would get a $5 off coupon for every $20 I spent that day, so I broke down my purchase into 3 transactions. No problems, no worries.

So I go to Michael's today to use my coupons. I asked a clerk if I could use all 3 on one transaction, or did I have to do 3. She said 3. No worries again. So I wander around the store to find 3 sales worth of stuff totaling up to $5 each. I got a book of Smash journal cards (not sure what they are really called) and 3 packs of off brand washi tape. I also found some clearance ribbon, just in case.
So I get up there and tell the gal I want to do 3 transactions. Again, no problems. She rings the stuff up and it only takes off $1.27. Uh, no I want $5 off for the coupon. The higher up comes over and says oh, it's cause you have that clearance ribbon. You can't use a coupon on a clearance item. Oooookkkkk. So back I go, to shop some more and find something else to fill up the $$ amount. I find the exact same ribbon, not on clearance. Cool. I'll spend 50 cents more to get my $5 off. NO where on this ribbon or display does it say it is on clearance. I get up there and sure enough, it's on clearance. UGH!
So I say, skip this ribbon, sell me a candy bar instead. OH, the off brand washi is on clearance too. Wait a minute. It wasn't a few minutes ago when I was up here. Oh, well, the computer updated. We haven't gotten the display or items update. Are you freaking kidding me?!??!

As I am turning back into the store for expedition #3, a clerk asks if she can help me with anything. I said "Do you really wanna know?" She said "If it pertains to the store, yes" So I told her my saga. She calls over another manager person (now we have 5 employess involved, for those keeping track) and this gal says, oh, you can't have more than one transaction in a day. I said "You mean to tell me that if I bought something and then decided I needed more of it to finish my project and came back, you wouldn't sell me more?" She said, no, that's not what I said. Uh, yes it is. She also said that it was again store rules to do multiple transactions. I said the gal that sold me the scrapbooks last week had no problem with it and the 2 cashiers I had been to today had no problems. She said "What are their names? They will get written up." I said never mind and turned to go.

I stopped, thinking this is nuts. There is no point in my just throwing away the coupons. I found 3 ladies in the checkout lane and gave them each one of the coupons. They were simply delighted. I really, really hope they could use them.

I am a couponer and have even taught classes before on it. I know what I am doing, but evidently Michael's doesn't. Grrrr.

To top it all off, I also had some photo boxes that my daughter had picked up last week. I started again out the store and turned when I remembered them in my car. I talked to clerk #4 and asked her if I could exchange some of them, box for box. My daughter to me too many holiday ones, and I'd just like some plain, solid colored ones. S
She said "What we would have to do is re-enter those into our system and issue you a refund. Then you can buy what you like with that money." I told her they were bought last week when they were $1.66 each. She said she was sorry, but that isn't the price anymore. I know I couldn't be heard thru out the store, but I wasn't any too quiet, either. We were near the check out and I announced I will never shop at a Michael's again and I will be sure to let people know why.

That was almost 6 hours ago and I am still so irritated about it. At least I'm not longer as mad as I was....

Thanks for listening, and don't go to Michael's. Ugh!

Wow, how aggravating. I've also noticed it's completely different depending on which cashier you get. I got double-charged for an entire order and it was a nightmare to straighten out. Not a fan.

Sorry you had such a bad experience! I do think the coupons say one per customer per day. I usually just check out, take that bag to the car, wander back in and check out at another register. I can kind of understand them not allowing the three transactions in a row.

I DON'T get the return thing! Did you have your receipt? I think that is bull, you should be able to exchange without doing the return. I know they wanted to do that once for an item-minus the 20% because I didn't have a receipt! I said that is ridiculous, I am not returning it-I just bought a double and want to EXCHANGE it. Grr.

Kittymomma, I did have my receipt. I'm just going to take them back, after Christmas, without my receipt. Evidently, being honest isn't the best policy here.

The thing that really really frustrated me is that the cashier last night was fine with multiple transactions and so were the 2 I tried to check out with today.

Still mad....and it makes me mad that I am mad. LOL

I feel your pain! They have the worst customer service. Speaking of our local Ms, the employees don't know their stock. I've heard them tell customers, no, they don't carry that and I will butt in and say, "yes you do" and be able to tell the customer what aisle it is on! Clearance and sale merchandise isn't clearly marked. At least our J's has scanners in some aisles so you can walk up and scan items before you get to the check out to see if it is on sale, or regular price and eligible for a coupon.

My advice, and goal for 2013 is to shop small. We just lost another LSS this weekend Shop 2peas and your LSS to keep them in business. They deserve our support, M's definitely does not!

I worked in retail for many years, and that was not proper customer service. I can see them limiting the number of coupons used during one trip( if the store was busy, but if the customer left the store and came back in let them use the coupon). The exchange is a whole different matter. Yes, they do need to do an actual return( the codes are different and when it is time for an audit the count would be off) however they can and should adjust the price to the original purchase. The fact that you left so unhappy should have been the managers priority. They do have a certain amount of wiggle room, and there are things that they could have done to make you feel better. If you are still upset tomorrow I suggest contacting the store director, if you don't feel that your concern was dealt with move on up the ladder and contact the home office.

I'll be honest. I kind of don't sympathize.

I could be wrong, but I have never seen a Michaels coupon that doesn't say one coupon per customer per day. If the cashiers let you do multiple transactions all at once, you were lucky.

If you are a couponer you would know most coupons have exclusions.

I too had a bad experience a ms just the other day involving coupons. I was doing what I had done many times before but the cashier said no.
I went to Js later in the day and they actually offered to let me use a coupon that I wasn't going to use because I thought I couldn't. I left very happy. I've always loved my Js much more than Ms.
My LSS is about a 15-20min drive. Not far but I don't like to take the kids and they are only in school half day. I also can't justify paying more in gas and cost for something I can buy in my town cheaper. I will be sad if the LSS closes (I've heard they are struggling) but I don't think I'm their target customer. I like a sale and bargin too much!

You're probably not the only one, and why there are so many views with so few replies. Michaels coupons do state that only one is allowed per customer per day. And I've encountered the situation at other stores of simply wanting to exchange an item, yet was charged the difference between the sale price it was initially bought at and the current non-sale price.

Still, OP, I can understand your aggravation. Bummer.

Every time I go to Ms the cashiers will take some coupons when others won't! I know that you cannot use more then one of the SAME coupon per person per day so I wouldn't even try it. But Michael's coupon policy states that you can combine two DIFFERENT coupons on one transaction. Example if you have a 40% off one item and a 20% off entire purchase you should be allowed to use them each once on only one transaction per day.. It states that in there coupon policy & there Facebook page I have seen it as well! Because too many times a cashier will accept it while another wont. It's not always the customers responsibly to know the policy in and out its the cashiers and they honestly need to figure something out to make sure there all on the same page with there store policy's so that way there is no confusion period! But as far as getting mad that you can't use 3 coupons on 3 different transactions isn't Michael's fault because it states on all there coupons that its not allowed if you we're to get away with it once or twice then that's a bonus for you but shouldn't be expected! But they should just let you exchange the photo boxes for another color that's a little insane.. Btw there on sale starting 12/2 .. 7 for $10 incase you wanna exchange them!

Sorry you had such an awful experience. Here is what drives me nuts about that place- you can't use multiple coupons in one day! Why do they issue so many then? I am not going to go back every day just so I can use all the friggin coupons.

And the new ones they started issuing for only certain times of day drive me crazy too.

I can see why you don't want to go back.

I don't think it's so much the coupon policy as it is the willy-nilly enforcement. If each and every cashier was told how to do it and not to waver then there would not be the problems and no one would have complaints about this.

I did notice that when I went to Michael's on Thanksgiving and got the wheels for my cubes, when I looked at the receipt it says they rang up for 9.99 but in parenthesis it said the return value was only 6.99. I thought that was odd. I could see them not wanting you to return something and get the original price, but not to even get the sale price you paid seems kind of shady.

I can tell that you are frustrated and I'm sorry that you are. But honestly, you were trying to buy junk you didn't really want just so you could use coupons that you got when you shouldn't have. I guess I don't see why you are so frustrated when you tried to beat the system and weren't able to.

That's because they only cost you 6.99. If you actually add up all the "return values" and then add sales tax that is what you paid.
The 9.99 was the sale price, then the 6.99 is the price you paid after using the 30% off your entire order coupon. Thus, if you tried to return it you DO get what you paid (ie 6.99).

wow you would think in the economy they would want your money and try to work with crafters since those items arent really important like food, meds ect.. Im not sure but my friend use to work at a M's and she said no manager she ever had ever wrote up someone for working with a customer in using there coupons it meant sales and a better bottom line. I would shoot a email to the main office and just copy and paste your thread here. I think you would be amazed at at what that would do for the attitude in you M's in the future.

This was my thought exactly. Why would they let you do that? I always use a coupon, but how would a store stay in business if we all tried these strategies?

Those people make approximately $8 an hour. If they actually got 40 hours a week, which most of them don't, that's a $16,000 salary for a job where you are regularly yelled at by people over $2-3 differences.

The reason you find so much variation is that there are a lot of them who figure out over time that they would rather just give you all the discounts than deal with getting screamed at by irate customers. I have done the retail thing (many years ago) and while 95% of customers are just regular people, that 5% is able to ruin your whole day. It is unbelievable how horrible people will act over 99 cents. I still get fired up thinking about it.

Also, as a cashier, you learn really quickly that if you say no to the customer, as per the rules outlined, the manager is almost always just going to say yes anyway, so there's no point in enforcing the rules just so you can have people taking their crap out on you all day.

When I go to M's, I just ask the cashier if I can use my coupons and do separate transactions. They almost always say yes because they don't care. But if they are super busy, I just don't do it. Life as a cashier is shitty and I'm not interested in contributing further to that.

I think the checkers realize it is annoying to expect you to make a purchase and then sneak back in a few minutes later to make another. So even though it is against policy (and clearly stated on the coupon) they are being nice to allow you to do more than one transaction at a time. If you are a couponer you have should realized this - which means calling them out to their manager was uncool.

OTOH, not doing an even exchange for the photo boxes is bad policy and rude. I have seen some stores do this, but it is unnecessarily jerky IMHO.

I have to agree with e_doe.

I have never had a bad shopping experience with my M's or issues with their employees. This is probably because I don't try to circumvent their coupon policy or get irritated with staff for actually doing their job like they are supposed to. Trying to break the rules and do things that is really against their store policy is not ethical. Getting mad about it because it didn't work is even worse.

Exactly!

Sorry, but I really feel like if you aren't willing to pay full price for something you probably don't really need it. Too many of us by "stuff" just because it's on sale or we have a good coupon.

I agree with FurryPea....I've never been able to use more than one coupon at M's unless one is an M's & one is a J's & even then, they have to be different percentages off (one for 40%, one for 50. And I also would not ask the cashier to let me use multiple coupons like that. If they've done it for you in the past, then I feel you were taking advantage of the system.

I did have my receipt. I'm just going to take them back, after Christmas, without my receipt. Evidently, being honest isn't the best policy here.

Ok, while I do feel it was wrong for them to not let you exchange the boxes, I don't understand this part.....why would you take them back after Christmas without the receipt? Do you think you'll get more money back for them if you don't have the receipt? IMO, being honest is ALWAYS the best policy....and that includes not trying to take advantage of their coupons.

So annoying! Michael's changes their rules not only depending what store you go to, but which cashier! I tried to use a 60% off a regular price item from Joann's there a few weeks back...their policy is that they "accept competitor's coupons". I finally picked something out and waited in a long line at the cash register only to be told they can't match the 60% off coupon because that is what they mark their clearance stuff down to. What?? That's not what their sign says. I asked to speak to a manager and instead she turned and asked the cashier behind her who was not the manager. She agreed with her assessment that they could not take the 60% off coupons. I said "forget it" and walked out.

I know what you mean about michaels . They had a bogo free on a end cap with a sign on all embellishments. I got mini tags. Manager said a tag was not a embellishment. Sometimes signs are misleading on sale items.

It may be 'just' 99c to you, but even pennies add up quickly for a company. Now that doesn't mean someone should go all ballistic but I think they have a right to defend that 99c coming out of their pocket.
If a company marks something for 99c and charges you a dollar, you might think it's silly to say something over a penny. And that's how companies can end up making thousands in a year. All because of that one little penny in their favor.

That's some arrogance there. If you know so much, you'd know how to read the fine print. They aren't wrong to enforce the company policy - even if the cashiers don't care to.
The coupons are there to entice customers into the store to make money. Not to give stuff away.

I find the exact same ribbon, not on clearance

If it's the exact same ribbon, how would you expect it to NOT be on clearance?

You might get lucky to get a cashier that lets policy slide, I did occasionally when I was a cashier just to avoid fights, but that shouldn't be expected.

I once had a man try to climb over the counter to quote "get me" over something once. It's insane how people act.

I'm not a fan of Michaels. My experiences have been mostly bad. Most stores do a price adjustment but not them(I wasn't trying to use a coupon just a different sale price). So, my husband went to one Michaels and rebought the item for 60% off and an additional 25% off and took it back to another michaels store and returned it with my original receipt. Most stores will do that.

I've also noticed it's completely different depending on which cashier you get.
Oh, absolutely. There is one at the Ms near me that is so freaking stupid, I do not know how she manages to breathe and walk at the same time. SERIOUSLY!

Then there are two others that know how to read and will do so if there is a question on anything.

Both Michaels near me really suck too... I go there with my coupons, read the fine print, check the prices, and still somehow, according to them, do it wrong Been told all sorts of crazy things by different staff: can't return or exchange items if I used a coupon when I bought them (not on that item, but on another item on the same receipt), can't return/exchange Martha Stewart items, cant use two separate coupons (one for frames, one for -40% off a scrapbooking tool) during the same transaction and can't do more than one transaction a day at the same store location (they suggested I drive to their other location to use my other coupon but let me know they couldn't call to see if the product I wanted was in stock)...

It seems like the fine print is different depending on where you are - our coupons say that we can use one if that specific coupon per day, but there's nothing about using one of each of the different coupons they offer in the same transaction... Also, the location closest to me sets up a large seasonal display I products and those are shown regular price so you think you can use a coupon... The majority of the products are on sale or clearance though, and they will say that the products that are part of that display are for inspiration only and so they leave the regular price showing... How am I supposed I know that the price showing isn't the real price, and what store displays the higher regular price than the lower sale price? One woman lost it on the cashier who yelled right back that it wasn't her fault, and that her manager told them not to price those as clearance because customers wouldn't bother to change their purchase once they picked things out and that the customer should yell at him... So even the cashier seemed to know there was something funny going on... The customer said she was going to report the manager and the cashier said good luck because others had but he clears out stock so they don't care... Maybe it's just a bad manager and not store policy, but I hate having to deal with it...

They drive me crazy... I wish we had Hobby Lobby or Joann's here for general and seasonal craft supplies - Michaels has no competition here and they know that...

But Michael's coupon policy states that you can combine two DIFFERENT coupons on one transaction. Example if you have a 40% off one item and a 20% off entire purchase you should be allowed to use them each once on only one transaction per day.

I do this at Michael's and Joann's all the time. Yeah.

The thing that *I* personally hate is the stored "near" me have this thing (not all M's does it) that if you buy something it's instantly worth less money. For example:
*$5 package of stickers. You pay regular price, no coupon or sale, you just give them the $5 and tax.
*Then look at your receipt. It will print out as "Original Price - $5" and then "Return price - $4.37" or some crap like that under it.
*You don't GET YOUR MONEY BACK for returns.

So, if you accidentally buy the wrong thing, say a cartridge that didn't fit in your machine, or the wrong type of glue, you CANNOT GET YOUR MONEY BACK FOR IT. Oh, sure, you can get SOME, but not your actual money. They'll claim it's a BS restocking fee, or some crap, but it's not a company wide policy. What it IS is a case of people buying things with coupons, returning them for full price, and then MAKING MONEY off the company. So now the stores have to ruin it for everyone.

At Hobby Lobby it says one coupon per customer per day too! The closest Hobby Lobby & Michaels is an hour a way from me thus I don't go there very often- maybe 4 times a year. I don't travel that far just for those two stores, that is where the closet mall is. So when I go to HL or Michaels I end up spending too much $$. My mom usually comes shopping with me anyway. I finally learned to ask my mom to come into HL with me- I give her my other coupon and some $ and we both check out. Maybe you can ask your hubby or someone else to come in with you and give him a coupon and $ and you can use your own coupon then check out separately. If I see anyone in Michaels or HL in the scrapbooking isle I always tell them about two peas because I love 2peas! 2Peas spoil us with cute products that come in everyday! Everytime I go into Michaels and HL I always come out of the store (HL or Michaels) grumbling to my self that they don't carry what I was originally looking for. So if you are unhappy about your Michaels just go into their scrapbooking isle and tell their customers about 2 peas!

I had a delightful 60% off coupon from Joann's and I went on Michaels .com and I printed out where it says I can use it at micheals and the clerk said oh sorry you can't use this. I asked for a manager who treated me like a four year old and just told me the same thing again and again. Will not be shopping there if I can avoid it

I had the same terrible experience trying to use my $5 coupons as well. I had the $5 coupon and the 40% off coupon. It was very frustrating and left me asking the question... why do I continue to shop here?

Those $5 off coupons clearly state that it is good for 1 customer per day AND it clearly states that clearance items (and other categories) are exempt.

Sorry, I've been in your shoes before, but the coupons do say it.

I suggest everyone with valid complaints write letters to the regional managers with copies to customer service and the corporate office. *Maybe* if they get enough complaints higher up they'll do something. I've had mostly positive experiences at mine. I even had a regional manager give me a $10 gc one day that I was in there when he was there with some other people.
You might want to include something they might actually be doing right, too, and how they could improve.

I've only seen a receipt show a different "return value" on it when I have used a % off coupon for that item.

My local M's relocated this past summer into a larger, nicer location. When they moved, the customer service improved dramatically. I am really impressed with them now.

ETA:

To the OP's point - clearance items aren't included on coupons - not sure why that's a surprise. Plus, if one item is marked clearance and you pick up the exact same item without a clearance tag, it shouldn't be a surprise that the item is on clearance as well.

I think asking a store to break up your order into multiple tranacations is asking a lot (especally at this time of year when they are incredibly busy) and if the store says no - I can't fault them for it. If they say yes, consider it a lucky day. The line at M's was HUGE on Saturday, but it went fast. I had very good, friendly service.
