I think you owe an awful lot of people on this board an apology for the comments you made about illegals working at the fast food restaurants in your town.
I, and many others were deeply offended by your completely ignorant statements
as many pointed out-not speaking english does NOT automatically indicate that someone is in this country illegally.

I disagree, I didn't read the other thread until this was posted and Squillen's comment is distasteful and she should apologize, not that I expect it to happen, but the other thread doesn't need to be derailed by this discussion, it's intense enough already. | |

I never understand the whole 'uncalled for' reaction when it comes to call out threads. At least in the black and white sense. I don't understand why there's this blanket rule for them and they're not looked at with an individual eye.
Or why any time a person stands up for something they think is important, it's call handslapping.
Squillen dropped an ugly allegation, was called on it and never came back. Sometimes things are so offensive that you just want to stand up and say 'Hey! Hey you!' instead of shouting at person's back as they walk away.
I just think this place gets easily confused between a hand slap and standing up and saying something when someone makes an accusation so ridiculous you just can't let it slide...and you shouldn't let it slide.
And fwiw, I've never posted a callout thread either...and maybe I'm being a bit biased because I, too, was offended...and honestly surprised...by Squillen's remarks on that thread and I kinda hoped she would address them. |

It was a pretty atrocious comment and follow up justification. But there was a whole bunch of crazy thought processes going on.
I don't mind the call out, but it seems like people did a pretty darn good job of it on the original thread - rarely have I seen people just say someone is ignorant or an asshole like they did on that thread (except when I do it.) |

Eh, I'm kind of interested to hear what she has to stay too.
It reminds me of a family I know from Afghanistan. They had a wonderful, nice life in Afghanistan years ago, both teachers, her husband a respectable man in the community. She had several children, her oldest son being in his 20s.
When the taliban took over her oldest son was killed & they had to flee to a refugee camp in Pakistan. Because it was assumed they had money, the border patrol in Pakistan locked her husband up in prison & they had to give them everything they had - and since they only had what they could carry it was things like wedding rings etc that got him out of prison.
They spent their years in the refugee camp in Pakistan learning German - they were told that is where they would be granted a Visa.
But guess what, they were sent here. Their English SUCKS. But they are college educated people who have survived tremendous, life altering events who speak not one but 2 languages fluently and get better at their English every day, they've managed to pass the test to become US Citizens...even though it took them 3 attempts and they were finally tutored in a way that they would read the test question, translate it to German since that's closer to English, from German to their native language, back to German, then answer in English.
Despite their education, they work retail jobs right now...and it makes me sad to think someone would dismiss them because they couldn't get the fact that you were saying "no special sauce" quickly enough.
Don't go judging books by their covers, it will kick you in the ass more often than not. |

mom2ja2...that story breaks my heart and makes me feel both incredibly fortunate and incredibly humbled at the same time. I don't believe most of the people on the thread in question have any idea what it's like to actually live to *survive*. Just survive. And it pisses me off that they take their relatively good fortune and make it in to some kind of superhero story of success.
Whatever. When we're all dealt the same hand in this life, and around this world, then we can call it a fair game. Otherwise, most of us here today have absolutely no idea...

If that's what she believes, why should she apologize? Now you know what she thinks.
If I tell someone, "I'm sorry I offended you" it doesn't mean "I'm sorry for what I said and I now believe differently thanks to you." I'm just sorry for how my belief impacted your feelings.
I'm not defending Squillen or her statements, I'm just speaking theoretically. | |

Yes, Squillen's comment was way out of line, and stunningly ignorant.
As a former manufacturing company owner, 90% of my work force were immigrants...LEGAL immigrants (who were paid more than minimum wage and had health care benefit!) but most of them struggled with English. We had workplace notices posted in 4 languages.
Most of these folks were well educated in their own countries but didn't speak English well enough to secure employment in their desired field. Did they whine and complain? No, they worked hard and during our busy times, when we had to go to 2 shifts, or work on weekends, my American born, Caucasian workers would whine and pout about having to come in on Saturdays... my immigrant employees gratefully accepted the overtime, rounded up relatives to do temp work, rarely took their vacation time, or sick days, and were always willing to put out more than they were asked for. To shrug one's shoulders and say they could barely speak English, therefore they must be illegals, is not only stupid, it's insulting. | |

One of my husband's dearest friends is a mexican living in Idaho named Arturo. He immigrated from Mexico 10-15 years ago.
My husband was a shop manager in San Mateo, California and arturo was one of his installers. They kept a professional distance, but it was obvious that they were "friends" on a professional level. When my husband gave notice that he was leaving and coming back to the midwest, he said "what the hell" and hung out with Arturo many times even staying at his house. (my husband didn't have an apartment... long story).
They parted ways and stay in touch. Arturo was one of the few people we invited to our wedding even.
Shortly after that, Arturo was hit hard by the housing bust and lost his rental home and then his own home. He had to pick up and move to Idaho where he wasn't treated so wonderfully.
His english is broken, but he understands english very well.
He is here legally on a work visa. His children are US citizens. Illegals piss him the hell off. He says he busted his ass to get here legally and so should they.
My point is, I see both sides of this story.
1.) you don't know everyone's story so be careful who you judge
2.) squillen just made a blanket statement that may or may not be true. She didn't call anyone ugly names. Just said she wasn't sure they were legal or not.
I grew up near a small town in Iowa that is full of illegals. Packed. This was in the 80's when that was just not seen in the midwest. There's a factory there that goes to the border and picks up illegals and brings them back to work. When they get busted, they get deported and then come back a few months later with a new name and new idenity and get their jobs back.
So yeah, some people have colored opinions of illegal immigrants. |

I'm not even sure half the people that work at our local fast food places are legal citizens.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How do you know this?? Do they have and accent and dark skin? That must make them illegal.
What a nasty thing to say Squillen.
It's not a nasty thing to say if it's true. And I think it is. On more than three occasions I've asked an employee behind the counter (not the register person) for something and they had no idea what I was even asking. They didn't speak english and didn't understand english.
I know I'm just assuming here, but if you were born and raised in the US, and went to public school, you've learned english. *shrugs*
i am not sure what the big deal is.....if i went to a restaurant and the person behind the counter could not understand what i was asking for i would assume that they were illegal's too....if you are in this country legally, i would assume that the first thing you would do is learn the language if you are going to be working at a job that requires any time dealing one on one with the public. i would have no problem if someone is here LEGALLY and is working on their language skills but they have no business working one on one with the public if they can't yet communicate. if they are here ILLEGALLY, they are just sucking the jobs from the ones that are here LEGALLY.
before everyone gets their knickers in a knot, i have a problem with ILLEGALS in this country given the same (and usually more) benefits AND JOBS as folks that have lived here forever. it's not right...and it's not fair.
fwiw i think that this How do you know this?? Do they have and accent and dark skin? That must make them illegal.
is much more offensive than what squillen said.....

To shrug one's shoulders and say they could barely speak English, therefore they must be illegals, is not only stupid, it's insulting.
this was my mom and dad. they immigrated to the US when they were in their late 20's. talk bout thick accents. my dad was an attorney in his native country. when he got here, he couldn't just start practicing an attorney. instead he worked days as a social worker for the county and at night he delivered pizza. we lived in public housing. my mom did babysitting. in the meantime, my dad studied for his real estate license and did real estate during the market boom of the 80's. my mom got a job in the billing office of the county hospital. they were able to buy a house 7 years after immigrating.
they continued to work hard and even managed to buy many rental properties that were used to send us all to college and my brother to law school. when my dad was in his 50's, he studied for the California Bar Exam (one of the hardest in the country to pass), passed and became a licensed attorney again. my mom retired from her one and only job at the hospital. the first house and commercial building they bought are paid off. those thick accents gave us the amazing opportunities we have today. those thick accents were not illegal, just hard working. with those accents, my parents achieved the american dream for themselves and their children.
i didn't read squillen's original thread but i disagree with what she said. it was ignorant. you (squillen) don't know the life and circumstances behind the thick accents and struggle to speak english. don't you think they know that the thick accents are a hindrance (to some degree) for getting jobs and other opportunities? do you think they like having their children translate for them until they master the language?
for many, the accent and language is motivation to work harder to achieve their dreams. don't be so arrogant to think that just because you were born in the US, that you are so much better.
FYI, the richest person in the world is Carlos Slim Helu from Mexico worth $69B. Only 3 of the richest men in the world are from the US. What do you have to say about those other 7 thick accents???? nothing, i'm sure.

My great-grandfather immigrated (legally, as far as I know, as I will admit we never broke bread on this topic) to the U.S. and was one of those "job creators" we're always hearing so much about. He owned and operated a dairy farm and made enough money to retire comfortably back to the old country into an antique-filled mansion. He never did learn English, even though he was here for forty years; evidently, back in the day, a person could be a titan of industry and a target of tax cuts without being able to understand whether you wanted fries or apple slices in your Happy Meal.
Carry on. | |

You know, Kristin, you used to be fairly evenhanded. No more. I notice that even though Ms. Smartypants said far worse than "bitch" on the other thread you were heavily involved in, you didn't say "nice" to her comments.
Seems you're just like so many others....it's fine as long as you agree with the poster and not if you don't.
You know, Lauren, you'd think after all these years of interacting with one another, both in agreement and disagreement, you'd at least make the attempt to spell my name correctly.
And you're right. I didn't correct Ms.Smartypants...first because I didn't notice what she'd said. But upon you're pointing it out to me, I know why I didn't notice it and that's because you're exactly right, I didn't care all that much.
Because I'm sick to death of people spouting insulting, inflammatory and prejudicial shit like that and NOT being called on it. And after a while, I even stop caring *how* they're called on it...it's not right but it's true and that's my own cross to bear, I guess.
I own it. You're right...I'm just like so many others, including YOU, it looks like:
Oblio, I don't agree with your points but if you managed to make them without insulting others while doing so, I bet people would be willing to give them a lot more thought.
it only matters when it matters, right? |

i am not sure what the big deal is.....if i went to a restaurant and the person behind the counter could not understand what i was asking for i would assume that they were illegal's too....if you are in this country legally, i would assume that the first thing you would do is learn the language if you are going to be working at a job that requires any time dealing one on one with the public.
You can be in this country legally and not speak English. There is no correlation between the two. |

Well Kristen, I'm tired of all the one-sided nonsense. So you go ahead and own it , that you're handslap only those who's positions you don't agree with and I'll not care anymore about your opinion or handslapping because you're no longer someone worth taking note of as I used to.
I own it. |

slight deviation from the topic - if our family would need to move to another country, I would have a hard time learning the language. I don't learn languages well. I have tried for years in many different ways, but I struggle and struggle. I can't roll my R's and I can't hear certain tones so many languages are beyond my abilities.
That doesn't mean I would be in the country illegally. It would mean I am not a natural linguist and that a 2nd language is tough even if I am not unintelligent (I know, I know, the intelligence could be debated on 2Ps ) |

I think it's funny out so many are offended by Squillen's comments but never say one word to Leftist Peas for calling Lynlam, Skybar et al nasty, nasty names.
Just interesting...

Don't most of us do this? How often do we see people from the same side handslapping their own? It's human nature. |

Again, how many on the right call out Lynlam and Skybar when they are out of line?
Both sides do this. It's natural. But if you are going to single one side out for handslapping, then at least be fair enough to acknowledge that YOUR side does the same thing. |

And I think it's funny - or pathetic - that there are so many conservative peas that have no problem with squillen's racist comments or lynlam's vile, foul-mouthed name calling (I don't recall Skybar being a profane name caller - she's kind of in a class of her own with her allegations). | |
