This is only the second thread I think I have ever started.
I have a very close and dear friend who's son is 19 and facing a major health crisis.
Chris turned 19 at the beginning of November. He celebrated his birthday at Parris Island in boot camp. The week before Thanksgiving he graduated and recieved his commission as a PFC in the Marines. This is an awesome kid...Eagle Scout, football player, NHS member... His only dream has been to serve a couple tours in the USMC and then become a police officer like his dad.
He had leave for Thanksgiving and came home to celebrate with his family. A week ago today he was at a friends house watching football, a typical Sunday afternoon, when he suffered a stroke. Testing discovered that his heart was severely damaged, working at about 20% capacity and that is what led to the stroke. They are still trying to figure out what caused the heart damage, as he was fine when he left for basic.
Tomorrow morning he will undergo a long surgery to insert a heart pump in his chest. He has already begun the process of being put on the national list for a donor heart as that is his only chance for long term survival.
Please...whatever your inkling - prayer, positive thoughts, etc. - send those out for Christopher and his family.

Oh, my goodness. My younger brother was being considered for a heart pump two years ago this month. It was such a frightening prospect, and yet, if it's the only option, you do what you must. I will certainly keep Christopher and his family and friends in my thoughts and prayers. May God grant him/them strength, healing, peace, hope, encouragement and perseverance.

This hits home in a BIG way, my sister was tranferred on Friday from the local hospital to Emory Hospital in Atlanta to be evaluated for placement of a heart pump. Three weeks ago she was visiting me in Va. Beach, the following Friday she was admitted to the hospital with a heart attack (the widowmaker) and pneumonia. Since than she has gone in to heart failure and can't be taken off oxygen. After 2 weeks they made the decision to transfer her to Emory for the heart pump. Emory is now doing all sorts of testing and will choose which way to proceed when all the data comes in. The doctors have told her she may eventually need a heart transplant. She is only 56 and has been relatively healthy upon til this happend.
If anyone could add her to their prayer list, I would appreciate it and I will certainly add Christopher to my list of prayers.

Lilbit, I will certainly pray for your sister. My brother recovered from the heart issues that nearly took his life, and while he has an implanted defibrillator, a heart pump was never necessary for him. He is our Christmas miracle, and we were so grateful for the hundreds of people around the world who prayed for him. It's a blessing to be able to return the favor, so to speak. May I ask what your sister's first name is? I'll be praying miraculous healing for her, as well as wisdom, peace, comfort and strength for those of you who love her.

Thanks for the prayers for my sister, Judy. She is doing enough better that her doctors don't think they have to put the heart pump in at this time. They said she may still need one later, but for now they are going to try to get her up walking and rehab. She hasn't been out of bed in 3 weeks, so it'll be tough for her. She is still on oxygen but all the drips have been off since Monday night. I can't imagine being told you are in heart failure when you've been going along perfectly normal up until then, just boom here it is.
Thanks a million for the prayers, they are working.

Thank you for such a great response. Chris got his heart pump on Monday. The surgery went very well, but that first night and next day were horrible. They are struggling to adjust him pain meds to keep him comfortable but not do damage. He developed a fever and it has been a struggle since Monday. I haven't heard anything yet today (Weds around 10 a.m.) but hope to soon.
He was a physically strong kid before this. He's always been a determined and mentally tough kid. Hopefully those things will continue to work in his favor.
I will post updates as I have them.
Betty - all the best to your sister in her recuperation.
