I broke (I think) a toe yesterday afternoon. I buddy taped it and today it is blue and so is the area on my foot around it. Should I go to the ER?

First of all, what toe was it?
There really isn't much you can do. Buddy tape it, yes. And the whole foot could turn purple, that's normal. But really, 99% of the time, all they'll do is take xrays and retape.
Hope it heals quickly! | |

The ER? No, it would cost a lot to do that and I don't think there is anything they can do. If you feel the need to have it looked at, I'd just make an appointment with the Dr. |

Also, in my experience (and through some of my friends that are nurses)... unless it's the big toe? Going to the dr. for a broken toe is a waste of money. Unless you're in an extreme amount of pain. Make sure to ice it. That's what we were told by my son's Football coach, (his wife is a nurse)

The "blue" is from the fresh bruise forming.
As long as you have circulation, keep it buddy taped.

It is the toe next to the little toe.
I kind of thought the same about what a dr would do.
Thanks. | |

Tape it to the neighboring toe. Ice it, and elevate it often. Don't put weight on it as best as you can. Do not go to the ER, because beyond taking x-rays and retaping, there isn't anything they can do. Unless you have severely twisted your toe around, or it's like, hanging at a really really odd angle. Then go. Or if it's your big toe-then you should probably have that looked at. It will take a few weeks to fully heal. Good luck! I break my toes often anymore (super klutzy!). |

I broke two of my toes a few years ago and did go to the ER (I thought I broke my foot too)
I really wish they had set the toes though-they were fairly crooked and took over 18 months to heal. I had problems and pain for quite some time and I still can't bend them to this day.
I'd only go if you think they need to be straightened out |

Thanks everyone. I will just stay home a couple of days and elevate and ice it. It really isn't hurting that bad

one thought - pay attention to the top of your foot for pain/irregularities. If you busted it with a frontal force, you might have broken it further into your foot. If so, you should get it looked at but I wouldn't go to the ER for it! |
