Dd has a gift exchange at preschool next week, at her Christmas party. The rules are $3.00 limit, and it has to be something enjoyed by boys and girls.

Besides more junk food and candy, I am at a loss!

Any ideas for me?

Crayolas - colored pencils or markers? Stickers? I'd cruise the dollar bins at target!

Ditto for books...either an actual story or an activity book or a coloring book.

Try hitting AC Moore or Michael's with a 50% off coupon if you want to get more bang for your buck on Crayola items.

Some parents might hate you, but I was always fine with it.....Play-doh.

Depending on their age, the craft store often have little kid-oriented craft kids, too.

Again, depending on age, you can sometimes find bagged Lego sets at Target for a little over $3.00, if you don't mind breaking the limit a little.

Honestly, I'd stay away from the dollar store if you can.

My MIL loves to buy things there for DS when they go out for lunch together, and while the sentiment is sweet, those toys often don't last the day. And sometimes they don't work/are broken from the moment they are opened. Which would be so disappointing to a preschooler who just received it as a gift.

A small notebook with a cute cover and a cute pencil?

I don't know if you'll find any now, or if it was just a Black Friday thing, but some of the stores were selling some classic board games for incredibly low prices that day. Memory comes to mind from the ads.

If you look in the Christmas section at Target, they usually have a wall of stocking stuffers, which typically include lots of little toys by Fisher Price, Nickelodeon, Matchbox, Barbie, etc.. You might be able to find a little toy there that will work.

Michael's has a Stocking Stuffer section, too.

puzzles from the dollar store. My 3 year old and 4 year old LOVE puzzles. Bubbles and sidewalk chalk (also both at the dollar store) would be good, too.

They have $1, $2, and $3 bins at Toys R Us. There were some cool things in there when I went today.

I want to suggest that you really try to stick to the $3 limit; because many of the kids will bring things from Dollar Tree or a dollar bin, and I remember what it was like as a little kid, bringing a really nice gift that I really liked and getting a gift in return that was not nearly as nice. Kids that age aren't very good all the time at masking disappointment or showing appreciation.

So if you decide to give a gift that is normally priced much higher but happens to be marked way down, it may not fit in with the things others bring.

They don't really care if it breaks in a day or two, they want a cool gift at the time.

Coloring books and crayons are always good choices.

Don't do dollar store junk. You can buy a four pack of Playdoh for $1.99, books for $2.99, color books and a 24 pack of crayons for under $3.00, etc!

Match Box cars (all kids like those)
Art paper & pencils
Puzzles
Balls
Bubbles
Sidewalk chalk

While I agree that dollar stores have a lot of imported junk I know that Dollar Tree has some really nice childrens books that are just maybe not the newest release. Coloring books, story books, puzzle books.

The quality of what you get at dollar stores can depend on if the item was made to sell for a dollar or is it overstock/older and now marked down. I used to do door prize bags from there and with a little time and label reading you can really score
