Stop bringing your sick kids to my house! Stop inviting me over to do whatever, then when I get there your kids are sick. What the F?!
Thanksgiving: Thanks for not warning us that your kids are sick. It's awesome that my daughter was playing with them until one of them threw up in the hallway. Thanks for that.
Monday: Invited over for craft day. No one mentions that one of the kids is home sick. Thanks for the heads up.
Today: Totally different mom comes by, sick toddler. We open the door DD hugs the little one. They were here for 20 minutes before she tells me her kid is sick. Awesome! Your sick kid is in there germing up my kid. Great. Thanks. Glad you stopped by. I hope that fever goes down. I'm sure toting him around town makes him feel great.
When your kids are sick do you at least warn people?! Maybe I was raised different.
Feel free to vent away about what's on your nerves today. Thanks for letting me blow off some steam too. |

Yep, I had the vent about my brother bringing his 3 sick kids to stay 5 days with us over Thanksgiving. Every. Single. Person in the house (10 of us in all) ended up getting sick. My mom is still sick (compromised immune system) and couldn't even give blood for an upcoming surgery she is having. We went to Disney the week after Thanksgiving and almost didn't go because the kids were still recovering.

We just got an email from dd's grade school that any child with a fever will be sent home immediately and cannot return to school for THREE days. Why? confirmed case of the flu.
They also reminded parents that if your child needs medication to break the fever, they do not belong at school.
I thought this was common sense. It's why my kids never have perfect attendance! We keep our germs to ourselves. |

I could say the same for adults. Went to a Christmas get together last year and the one woman was totally sick. She was grumbling about how she was going to make it through this event (afternoon)and the one at a friend's that evening. Oy. it is just a party, ffs.

I agree with you, and feel like the same thing applies to adults at work. Don't drag your half-dead self to work and share your bug with everyone.
I used to work with a woman who was ALWAYS sick. She'd come to work with a fever and cough all over the office. My boss was so disgusted, we were going to install disinfectant sprayers in the office.

I'll vent too. My daughter's friend's mom asked me if I could give her kid a ride to cheer practice last night and when I picked her up she told me her throat was sore and you could tell it was because it sounded swollen when she talked. Great. Now my kids and myself have been exposed, not to mention the other girls at cheer practice. This family is always sick, never goes to the doctor, and never keeps the germs home to themselves. People around them don't find out until after the fact that their kids are sick.  |

oh amen sister! my son has missed more school this year because other parents won't keep their freaking sick kids at home. to make matters worse I catch it as well and unfortunately where I work not only do they take your vacation time when you call off sick but you receive points for calling off, getting to many points gets you fired which means I just gave up 3 freaking vacations days which take me 6 months to accumulate because some parent sent their kid to school sick. Ahhh! I feel better now I so shouldn't have opened this vent lol |

You would be shocked at how many times kids were brought to me in the morning and four hours later I'd have to call a parent to pick up because they were running a high fever, only to be told something like 'Oh yeah. She had one when she got up, but I gave her some Tylenol and she seemed to be feeling better.'  Awesome. |

Other sick kids is how Norovirus was running rampant through 2 of my kid's schools the week before Thanksgiving. Yep, all three of my kids got it. Fantastic. |

Reminds me of the 2 different women in our office who bring their DDs when they are sick. One had ringworm and pinkeye and we just casually heard about in passing (ack! At least tell us so we don't touch what she's all over the office playing with, please!!) and the other one had the flu and told us she was kept home from school but "my mom had to do some work so she brought me here and told me to go talk to other people so she could get her work done." um, really? |

I HATE when people come to my house sick! I get sick very easily everyone knows it. When my kids are sick and someone wants to stop by I let them know in advance I feel it the right thing to do. And I expect the same from other. |

We have a lady who does this! She takes all her sick/vacation time as soon as she earns it so she never has it available when she actually needs it. After she brought her dd in when she had the flu, HR intervened and told her she wasn't allowed to bring her child under any circumstances any longer. It was crazy. She actually told us all, my dd isn't bothering anyone. Yeah, her germs are just going to stay in your cubicle all nice and tidy and get no one else sick.... |

My mom - who is a NURSE - came over to visit our newborn and brought her BRONCHITIS with her. To visit our newborn born in the winter that spend 4 days in the NICU for heart/lung issues.
Then a few months later (still winter), she came over with ROTOVIRUS. She was so sick she locked herself in one of my bathrooms and couldn't even get herself home for a while.
She SO did NOT win best Grandma award!!!! | |

My son is at home today with a stomach bug. It's been going around the school and I texted the person who I was supposed to work PTF stuff with and told her that I wouldn't make it today and that we were bummed that he couldn't sing at the school concert tonight. She asked me if he was feeling up to it would I take him...uh no I'm not getting everyone else sick just so I can watch him sing we will just have to miss out.
She then told me that when her son was in middle school he was in the hand bell's and the day of the performance he was sick, so they kept him home. The teacher wasn't happy that he missed the performance and the next year when tryouts came she would not let him back in. I believe that's why everyone takes their sick kids to work or school- because they are afraid of the repercussions of staying home and resting. | |

I didn't go places when I or my kids were sick, unless it was to the doctor. I had a child who got horribly, horribly sick every time he got a little cold. So when people would expose him and tell me, "Oh, it's nothing but a cold!" I got pretty upset. It was never just a cold for my kid. It ALWAYS meant a trip to the doctor for us, and sometimes he had so much trouble breathing that I felt we needed to go to the ER. Thankfully he outgrew that problem, but it was so frustrating.
I certainly would never take them with me to visit, and if people were coming to visit us, if we had sickness in my home, I always warned the potential guests AHEAD OF TIME before they left their house.
It's just basic courtesy to keep your germs to yourself. |

That said, I agree with everything else.
I remember the preschool Christmas program when a child with pinkeye was permitted to stand with the other children, ring her bells and perform because she would have been so disappointed to miss it. |

I always keep my kids home when I KNOW they are sick however my youngest (who has special needs, just started high school and really not enjoying it much at all) is ALWAYS complaining of feeling ill. Because she doesn't want to go to school. If I let her have the day off every time she said she was ill she would perhaps be at school less than half the time.
The other morning she was ready for school and I was putting her sports kit out for her and told her she had cross country ... into the other room she went and told her dad she wasn't feeling well. Umm because she hates sports with a passion and cross country worst of all I just sent her on her way.
Only to have to pick her up two hours later because she had been sick and now she has got some sort of awful viral infection, is covered in a mega rash which may or may not be either measles or rubella.
I felt so awful. I even made a point of telling the first aider at school I felt she was pulling one over on us in order to miss sports.
So she is now at home until at least Monday.
And I feel lousy for not having believed her.
But generally, yep, my kids are ill and they stay at home, however as a SAHM I understand that it is easier for me to make this call than parents who work and don't have an understanding employer.
ETA also I should be at our Christmas scrapbook crop this weekend but I have told them I won't go as I don't want to take the chance of being infected and passing it on to anyone there.
ETA again I remember when I was a kid my mum would purposely send me around to visit kids who were ill with stuff in order that I could catch all the different things and get them out of the way. Only I never caught anything. I didn't get Rubella until I was 16 and Chicken Pox until I was in my twenties!

I always warn people, even if my kid has a tiny cough, I will call and let them know, and leave it up to them if they want to cancel.

Ya. That's one of the things that pisses me off most.
Not only does DGD end up sick but because DD gets sick too.
She is on chemotherapy and her immune system is compromised and catching something can end up with her in the hospital
It's difficult to even go out shopping at this time if year because so many people are sick or have their sick kids out.
I was at Costco last weekend and a man walked by me, turned his face to ms and coughed this nasty ass wet cough right in my face

So to add to the thread I get an email from my daughters teacher saying that the kid that sits next to her is in class with strep throat  !!! Seriously. The parents couldn't keep that kid home. Super pissed! |

Really I think a lot of issues would be taken care of if people had more paid sick days. heck when I was in Germany if people had the slightest sniffle they stayed home and they had the sick time for it to. The same for kids, if a kid misses school then the parent misses work. There are some parents who just can't afford to miss much.

One kid came down with croup right after Thanksgiving, one with strep. Both had been exposed to my nephew who wasn't 100%, but didn't have those conditions.
After I found out what DSs had, I texted their friend's mom to warn her. |

Really I think a lot of issues would be taken care of if people had more paid sick days.
I never had sick days as a cashier - we weren't union and it wasn't offered at the store. DH though has a sick bank at his job and curntly has at least 2 weeks banked. Many of his coworkers use it up every month whether they are sick or not because 1) it is there and 2) they don't want to waste it.  Then they get sick and either come in and spread it around or take a few days off and complain they missed out on hours / pay.

I have to say my favorite was when a piano student came over and at the end of her lesson (where her hands had been all over my piano) she rubbed her eye while her mom told me that she was pretty sure the student was getting pink eye. Ummmmm...thanks!!! | |

I used to belong to a preschool mom's group & they had childcare. One meeting, they had to announce to watch your child for RSV because one of the moms had brought their kid up there with RSV.
I once knew of someone whose toddler died from RSV, so I was terrified DS would get it.

I try to stay home from work when I'm sick. But, unfortunately we are only given 4 paid sick days per year. So yeah, I go to work sick a lot more than I want to.
I wish our customers would stay home when they are sick. But nope, they've just got to shop for scrapbook supplies! It's so gross getting coughed and sneezed on all while ringing people up. I hate to even touch the stuff in their cart because I know they've touched it with their germy hands. | |

Yep, mine has been home from school for the past two days with a 100-101 fever and slight cough. She doesn't seem very sick - no aches, no other symptoms - so we think it's not flu, but I'm not taking her to school with a fever. No need to spread that around.
I am sympathetic, though, to parents who truly cannot afford to take the day off with a sick child. We have a family at school that is homeless right now, and they're not allowed to be in the shelter they're staying in during the day on weekdays. So the kids are either at school or on the street. Poor babies. This time of year there are always at least one or two sick kids on the cots in the nurse's office - they're really too sick to be in school but if the parents don't work the family doesn't eat.
I get the vent, really - for many it truly is a matter of doing the responsible thing because we have the luxury of time off or the ability to communicate and perhaps choose not to, and that's very frustrating. But I also feel for the ones who can't afford to take time off. |

I started asking when my kids were 5ish and stopped when they were teens. Something like "We'd love to stop by, is everyone healthy at home?" and if they said so and so had a fever or had been throwing up, we scheduled it for at least a week later. |

I have three kids in two different schools. It's just not feasible to stay home from work in order to keep them home for each and every sniffle. And at least with my kids, visible symptoms don't mean diddly. I took my DS to the Dr because he had a sore throat. DD went because I couldn't leave her home. Dr tested both for strep and DD had the worst case the Dr had seen in years with NO symptoms. DS didn't have strep, just a cold. 
Between kids' colds, which I tend to get from them, plus their Dr appts (eye dr, dentist, orthodontist, ped, endocrinologist, retinal specialist, etc) and my dr appts, if I stayed home for each and every one, I'd be at work less than 1/2 of the time. No employer is going to put up with that.
I do my best to keep the worst germs to ourselves, but my kids do and will go to school with sniffles as long as there is no fever and they are feeling up to it. |

I try to keep DS home when he is sick, but sometimes I just don't know. For the past month he had been complaining he didn't want to go to school and whatnot, he wasn't feeling well etc. He had done things like that before to get out of school when he wasn't really sick. So last week when he did the same thing again I took his temp, which was totally normal, and sent him on his way to school. I got called at 1pm that he had a fever. If I kept him home everytime he said he didn't feel well he would never be in school because he hates school. If he had had the fever in the morning I wouldn't have sent him. Sometimes things happen like that.

I agree! Give me a heads up and let me make the decision if I want to parade my kids next to your sick kids. Give me the option. If we're suppose to have friends over with kids and ours have the slightest thing wrong with them, I call and tell them. Obviously, fevers, throwing up etc are a cancellation. A sick kid belongs in the comfort of their own home/bed. | |

I follow the school rules. If a kid has a fever, he has to stay home.
They don't stay at home for a cold. I can't imagine yanking them from school every time they have a sniffle; however, I do warn visitors to my home if a kid (or I) should happen to have a bad cold.
I have to roll my eyes at the witch hunters who blame a specific kid at school for their own kid's cold. I want to say, "Oh, so you never ride the subway or touch money or touch things in a store?" It's pretty unlikely that your kid's classmate is Patient Zero for that cold!
Part of that is an urban living perspective, I guess. Maybe people who live in the country do live in a more hygienic bubble. |

I agree with you. I makes me mad that people will not keep them home and stop the spread of the germs.
We all laugh at this house how much I whip out the "tempy check thing" for my kids. My oldest has always had a tendency to have strep so the first thing I do when I hear my throat is sore or my head hurts is to take his temp.
I also hate when a kid comes to a party or school and the parent tells everyone that Johnny threw up in the car on the way here but I am sure it was something they ate!!!!!! | |

I teach VPK at a local daycare. Yesterday, THREE CHILDREN CAME TO SCHOOL CLEARLY SICK. IMHO (I won't go into details), all three sets of those parents KNEW THAT THEIR CHILDREN WERE SICK and sent them to school anyway - knowingly exposing other children/families/workers. In one case, the child said that his parents had given him "red medicine" before sending him to school. (They have a history of giving him Tylenol when he has a fever and then sending him in anyway.)
TEACHERS KNOW when you drug your kids and pat them on the rear end to go to school to see if they can last out the day, maybe even half day. WE WORK FOR A LIVING ALSO and we know that it's hard to take time off, but it comes with the package called PARENTING. It's not fair to KNOWINGLY expose others. If your child was sick at home, they're gonna be sick at school. If they weren't sick at home and they GET sick at school - totally understandable.
I expect to be flamed for this post, so flame away, people. It's just rude to intentionally endanger other peoples' health, not to mention sooooo unfair to your sick child.

It's not always so easy though ...
Not kids but I currently have a chest infection & a bad cough - I'm on antibiotics. When I saw the dr on Monday I specifically asked about work & he said I was fine to go in. So whilst my colleagues are probably cursing me for coughing in the office, I'm there because the dr says I'm fine to be there ... If dr had said no, I'd have been off all week! I am not infectious, and there's work to be done. Sorry if you don't like it ...
