Let's forget they had the signs.
Then? Is it offensive? Just for having a mexican themed party?
Is a toga party racists to the greeks?
Or is it totally just because of the signs?
Because are we going to get to a point in our nation, where it's so politically correct, that we can't even have "Mexican night" around the dinner table?

Incredibly stupid and bigoted.
Enjoying a margarita while wearing a sombrero is just silly fun. That's not what these young women were doing, though. If the OP is asking posters to qualify it as racist or just poor taste, then IMO it is both.

The party theme in and of itself is, as someone else said, "silly fun"
I don't know if it is racist or not. Not even sure I'd classify it as poor taste. I think the term "ignorant" applies quite well.
And stupid. I'd add stupid to the list as well. |

I don't know a single solitary real life Greek today who wears a toga. I don't think there are any real live toga wearers around to be offended by someone else's nasty stereotype of them. If there are, then I will gladly rescind my objection to the analogy.
On the other hand, I know some real live Mexicans who are often offended by nasty stereotypes of them, so I tend to be a bit more cautious of such impersonation.
But once again, I am a known stick in the mud, so...

Without the signs, it is a group of girls dressed as Mexicans. With the signs they are using negative stereotypes. Which IMO is in fact racist.
What a bunch of dumb asses. How could they not realise where this was going to go?!?!
This from the link provided:
"The students in the photo are within their First Amendment rights to express themselves in this way," Powers said. "Although we are certainly appalled that they would display this level of insensitivity and lack of judgment."
I can't tell you how sick and tired I am of seeing someone justify something disgusting they have said by jumping on the "first amendment rights" wagon. Pathetic.

Just b/c you are within your rights to do something doesn't mean there are no consequences. Sometimes the consequences include people looking down upon you for your lack of taste and class, people thinking you did something wrong or stupid, disgust with your organization and it's 'values.'
These girls were representatives of a group--both Penn State and the sorority when they posted photos of themselves with those stupid signs. But as long as they were having fun and looking cute, right? |

I guess I am not seeing the cute sorority girls others are.
I see entitled white women making a caricature out of my culture and laughing about it. And being called cute for it.
What makes me crazy is that I remember having this same damn discussion on my college campus twenty-five years ago. That long later, and this is how far we've gotten.
As has already been explained, the toga party analogy is off base. If you want to tell me that the PC folk are ruining your chance to have a Toms and Coons party, and make that analogy, then I'm listening. |

Black comedians use the N word all the time in their routines. If you tell me that it's ok for people of other races to use the N word just because blacks use it, then I buy your argument. However, I doubt that you will make that assertion.

Maybe it's because I live in Central Texas, but I find it offensive, even without the signs. It smacks of the "lazy Mexican" stereotype to me -- the napping man, sombrero pulled over his head with the blanket across his shoulders.
When you dip down to derogatory symbols to represent an entire group, that's offensive.
These girls showed very poor judgment. |

Not racist.
Silly. It was Halloween.
The articles I saw said it was a party prior to Halloween. I am going
to guess, since they were all dressed alike, that it was either a rush party or a theme mixer with a frat. When I was in college, we had themes for Rush, but they were based on tv shows, or sports, or other silly things. My sons are in a frat and they have some themed mixers that are questionable, but still not a racist theme.
As for it being just a Mexican themed party, I don't know. I have been to Cinco de Mayo parties and never once did I see the female guests decked out in sombreros, serapes, and fake mustaches. If it were just a Cinco De Mayo themed event, without the mustaches and signs, maybe, just maybe I could buy it.
And to top it off, once again, kids stupidly post these pictures online.
