Happy Sunday PEAps - it's the second week of advent, for those that participate in that.

Today has a bit of a different meaning for me - it's the anniversary of my grandmother's death in 1979. I will never ever forget that morning. It was a Sunday also and somone took a call in the church office. {I just really have to chuckle here that someone in my mother's family knew her well enough to know where she would be and knew the phone number there, too - all back in the day of the landlines and giant telephone books.....}

Anyway - I was sitting with the teens and I watched my dad go out, and then my mom go out {and we were just NEVER that family that MOVED out of our chair during church!} and then my sisters went out one by one. So, of course, I made the brave decision to go out, too. I can remember two of mother's friends coming home with us and helping us all pack up and we left that day for the then 6 hour drive from our home to Denton.

And then I remember it was the worst Christmas ever. My mother was so incredibly sad for weeks and weeks and weeks on end and there was really no Christmas spirit at our house at all that year. And then every year after, my oldest sister gives my mom a poinsettia on December 9 and so every year when I wake up my first thought on 12/9 is that it's Poinsettia Day.

I subsequently don't really do poinsettias. They are too sad to me. And I have no idea what my picture today will be. Maybe a little bit of baking going on and we are doing a gingerbread pancake breakfast for our two teenagers. So - THAT will probably work it's way onto the camera somehow.

I hope for you today that a happy, memorable day occurs! And maybe even a little mistletoe mambo will happen, too.

Penny

Good morning Penny. I am sorry today holds a sad memory for you. This year on Halloween, it was 17 years since my grandmother passed away. For some reason this year I am more affected by missing her than any other prior year, so I know how you feel. Sending hugs your way.

Don't know what the day will hold for me yet. Going to a birthday party, driving through our first big snow of the year. And I might try make my holiday toffee today. So we shall see. I will check back later.

Penny, I am also sorry that today brings back sad memories. My grandmother suddenly passed in March of this year, so for me this has been a rough holiday season so far.

Today I am finally feeling in the mood to put up our Christmas tree, so that will be today's picture.

Oh Penny, I'm sorry you have such a sad memory. I can understand, my grandmother died on Dec 23rd and my mom died 2 weeks before Christmas.

Today is a happy day - my dad's birthday! Dinner with him tonight

Today my 6 year old DD and I painted our toes and fingers red/green strips with red/green glitter on top! So that will be our DD for today our funky Christmas fingers and toes!
(My two year old DS was very upset I wouldn't paint his toes too! So I snapped a pic of him yelling 'paint toes!' at me. So that'll be included in our DD )

Penny I hope you have a good day. Pancakes always make my day good!

I am learning from reading this thread that I am not the only Pea who misses her grandmother terribly.

At this time of year, I especially miss all my grandparents, who made my holidays so special when I was a child. I wish I could go back for just one day and have one of those Christmases again!

My dad's mom died July 14, 1983. I can't believe she will be gone 30 years this coming summer. I think of her every day of my life.

I wish you all peace today.

I am not sure what our pic will be today but since this evening is our family Christmas movie night with hot cocoa and cookies I am sure that will be our pic. Unless something else comes up before that.

My grandmother died on Dec 10, with lots of family with her, celebrating her birthday. She'd just finished opening her gifts and eating cake and ice cream when she had a stroke. A wonderful evening changed in an instant. My mom, like yours, was so unhappy, and Christmas that year was miserable(30 years ago now). But Gran loved the holidays so I prefer to think of her enjoying Christmas rather than thinking of her dying on her birthday and how sad that Christmas was. Hope remembering your grandmother brings pleasant memories rather than sad ones.

What a sad memory associated with so many details. I lost my beloved daddy on December 1st and dh lost his mom on December 4th, both so many years ago, so I know how you feel - I still feel the air that went out of the room when we heard the news of both deaths. Hope you can get some goodness and hugs today from your loving family.

DD POTD was of a natural arrangement I made from our "Nature Patrol" we went on earlier in our woods. I collect stuff every year and make something in an old vase of my mother's. Good memories there.

Thanks for the thread. Peace to you.

took a pic of dh cutting/welding something. lol... no idea what he was doing...

penny - best wishes! sorry today holds a sad memory for you!

i went through my pics for 2010 (took the pics - never put the album together) and 2012 and realized i lack the daily in the december daily. lol... it's more like a "a few days in december" in my world. ok, so i'm exaggerating a little bit - there were 20 pics that made the cut in 2010 and 9 pics so far for 2012, but it' definitely lacking the daily... lol...

i will get both of these albums put together if it kills me, which it might!

Hoping to have a photo or two today of the kids helping us load food and gift donations for St. Vincent Paul tonight. If not, I don't think I will have much of anything.

My photos today will be of us putting up our tree. Although we actually did it last night, I'm using a favorite photo from my son's 3rd birthday party for Saturday.

I'm also remembering my grandma this year and having a bit of a struggle since I never really had closure. She passed away on 12/23 three years ago, the day before my first child was born. I firmly and truly believe that she sent him to us early (three weeks) so that she could meet him as he was passing in and she was passing out of this world.

JenBoom- you gave me goosebumps.

Ok Penny- after how this thread started today, I have some irony for you. My mom came over and brought a box of old photos she got from my uncle (a box of photos that were my grandmothers). She brought it for me to go through in case I wanted any.

Needless to say I think at least one old holiday photo and a story about memories will make it into my book today.

Hugs!

I'm sorry today holds sad memories for your Penny

As for our household, it was a crazy busy day!! DS and I started off the day by getting groceries, including the groceries we bought for the family DS's class is sponsoring. He put a lot of thought into what he would like to receive if he were getting a basket full of food and I think we did pretty well.

Then I headed to the mall to finish Christmas shopping (almost done!!) and then home to wrap. DS and I put together a gingerbread house and made a batch of cookies - lots of pictures from today and lots of stories so we'll see which on makes it into the DD album

Today marks 6 months since my mom passed away very unexpectedly. It was fitting that we held a holiday gift bazaar at our church today. Mom was a seamstress and crafter so putting this on was her "signature" event. She had already started planning this event before her passing. So today's event will go in my top 25 things I like about the holidays which is how I'm doing my DD this time.

Thanks, everyone, for the kind sentiments. I appreciate them, and many of us deal with losses. I focus on the remembering. My granny was a crafter, too, and she was big into photos back in the day. One year for Christmas she did a collage for all 9 of her children. She cut those photos ALL up - which was unheard of back then.

She was also a big baker and candy maker, and so as I baked cookies today and made her fudge recipe, I did have good memories and I am thankful for the genes she passed down to me.

Now my 4 batches of Chex Mix, my 2 batches of Sand Tarts and my one batch of fudge are done. And my Cowboys won. It was a GREAT day. I'm gonna' print out some pictures now - maybe this week's. I am so behind on that.

Thanks again. There are all kinds of ways to give at the holidays and I am thankful for the gifts of words today.

Penny, so sorry for your loss. It is a nice way to remember her by making her fudge. My grandfather passed away on Christmas Eve when I was 21. I wasn't very close to him, but I always think about him that day.

Jennboom, your story about your baby and your grandmother was so sweet.

My picture today will be of my dh's best friend and his wife- we went out to dinner with them.

I'm sorry for your sad memories penny but I'm glad that you did bake with her in mind and focusing on the good memories is the best way to honor our beloved missed ones. I now I'm a day late but I just wanted to say that.
