I hope I don't regret asking about this.
Our puppy trainer recommended bully sticks for our puppy. I bought some today (the kind with no scent) and it's been like crack for him. We can barely get him to move off his bed to do anything other than gnaw on this stick.
So I let him chew it for about 1/2 hour and then distract him with something else...but I feel guilty. I feel like a mom letting the baby sit in front of the TV - like I'm doing something wrong giving him something that is so distracting (and so gross - I made the mistake of googling to find out what was in them.)
Is this a typical reaction for a dog - to be that obsessed with a bully stick? And should I just be thankful that for the time he's chewing it, I can actually get things done around the house and not have to be hovering over him? |

I would say it's a typical reaction. Our cattle dog is the exact same way, he gets one and goes right through it, completely engrossed in it until it's gone. The habit can get expensive in my opinion (for dog treats anyway) versus how long it actually lasts, so we only get them for him occasionally now. He's in heaven when he has one though and they are a nice distraction! |

From what I understand, they are good for dogs, especially pups---those pups can start chewing on lots of other things if not occupied with something else.
Believe me, in the course of my life, I've had many a dog I wish could have been occupied by something like that!
And YES, a dog is most certainly able to be obsessed with a chewing stick! Perfectly natural and normal for a canine. |

We had to stop giving them to our dog. She would chew on them for a bit and then go dig in the backyard to bury them. I bet we have a dozen or so hidden all over our backyard. |

Juno likes the bulky sticks but not that much. She does have treats she fixates on to that degree, though. |

Oh yes perfectly normal. Don't feel guilty. Mine is 3 and goes thru it in minutes cuz she loves them so much. If you're that concerned get your pup the smallest ones if it's taking him/her a while to finish it. |

I read somewhere that, for a dog, chewing a bone is the equivalent to a human doing a crossword puzzle. And yes, my dog can get pretty engrossed with chewing. Her eyes almost glaze over while she's chewing. |

Normal. Our dog loves them. Me, on the other hand....not so much. They freaking STINK! But, keeps him occupied! We usually save bully sticks when we are doing something and don't want him to bother us  | |

I'm now guilt free!
He's SUCH a good puppy, but he likes to chew on my family room coffee table and climb up on the couch, so we have to keep our eyes on him at all times - this is such a welcome distraction.

I get the ones made from Beef Tendon but at 2.50 a pop they are expensive. Posh will be getting some for Christmas. Buddy could care less his "crack" is human food, specifically cheese. |

BLECH! Our trainer recommended them, a kong as well as compressed rawhide. Can I tell you Lucky loved them. They stank like the devil an I don't even have good sense of smell. Her tools were also loose and less predictable. So after I bought a huge package of them, I did the bones and the kong and donated the bully sticks to the shelter. |

Yeah, that's when I realized how nuts he was about it. He growled at me aggressively when I tried to take it (or just asked for it.)
I bought them specifically because our trainer wanted us to work with McFly on trust and showing him that we will give things back to him.
I'm not sure he believes me with these things. |

I'm about as pro-animal (domestic pet and otherwise) as they come, and unless you are Peabay's confidante, you don't have a clue where and how she selected this puppy.
Not all private breeders are "backyard" or "puppy mills" and some actually give support to shelters - which I assume is what you are referring to as the ethical option.

I don't know exactly what "bully sticks" are...but I'm assuming they are rawhide chew sticks.
I buy some from Target...they are processed in America which may not be really better, but I think that is better than the ones processed in China or Mexico or Boliva...or wherever.
They don't stink or stain the carpet.
I have two doxies (sometimes 3 if Dd's pup is staying with me) and I'll give each of them one in the afternoon. The older female is a stick horder...she will chew her's, then wait until the other dogs turn away from their's and she will steal their's and sit on them.
Cracks me up! The male and the pup will only really chew one that the older female has started chewing on...so it's like a chinese fire drill when someone moves away from their stick.
I regularly take the stick from their mouth...and sometimes give it to another dog...just to show them I'm domanint (sp?) but they all get one to chew.
The ones I buy are about 5" long...not big, but my dogs are not big.
Your puppy is adorable! I don't care where you got him. I have one doxie that I rescued from someone who wasn't able to take proper care of her, and the other two were pups from breeders. But I donate to my local shelter and would adopt if I had room for a bigger dog.

Eh-if someone truly cared about convincing people to adopt from shelters and rescues, they wouldn't use the bitch-attack-holier-than-thou-method that Pjaye is so fond of. Some how it makes her feel better about herself to slam others. It's her pea-modus operandi and has worked oh-so-well thus far.

True bully sticks are made from bull testicles. LOL! I get them at doggy daycare and have ordered them on Amazon. The ones we get are about 12" long and are $5.99 each. I only get them for special times like I need to do something or we have to ride in the car. |

It's my opinion and I am going to post it - like it or not (and I am well aware some people don't like it)
Peabay has 43,000 posts, not exactly new to this forum and she acknowledged in the first post that this would probably happen. That's why she tried to hide the new puppy post under a different title.
I've been around a while as well, I knew the insults would be forthcoming - go for it, they have no effect on me.
To be fair, I think this puppy will be well treated and loved...that isn't my issue.
It's the choices people deliberately make even when they know better, somehow they (and others) can always convince themselves they are not a part of the problem.
"Mini golden labradoodles" are NOT a breed. They are what people 'create' to make money, put a bunch of cute dogs together to make fluffy little puppies that people will buy and pay hundreds of dollars for...and people continue to buy them. Keeps the puppy mill business and unethical breeders going.
Meanwhile at the shelter, those older puppies who are no longer cute or the impulse buy has worn off are being injected...

ETA: She never acknowledged that YOU and your type of drama would happen. She said she would be sorry for asking about the bully sticks and what is she supposed to do now that she introduced this crack-like substance to her dog. Stop looking for things that aren't there.

My dog LOVES those and I love that she's happy and occupied. I pull 'em out on days when it's rainy and icky outside and she can't go out and strut her stuff around the neighborhood as much.
And I agree--shelter dogs are wonderful but sometimes you know exactly what you want and there's nothing wrong with making that choice either. My dog is a Chiweenie--one of those "designer" breeds, too. She was found and given to us, but I wouldn't hesitate to either recommend this breed or to get one in the future. She has the best traits of both dachshunds and chihuahuas and we've been very happy with this BREED. |

We would not be able to adopt from a shelter even if we wanted to. It is not an option for every family. I think that if people are getting dogs from responsible breeders (not puppy mills) and taking good care of them, it really isn't anyone's place to judge.
But, I know that is more than some peas can manage. |

Bully sticks are my dog's crack too. I just have to say "bully stick" and her eyes pop out of her head with excitement. I buy them because unlike rawhide they are completely digestible.I do save them as a last resort. When she is tired of fetch and tug of war and won't calm down it's time for a bully stick. I buy them here ...

My dog loves them, too. As a puppy, she could work on one for days, but now that her adult teeth are in she can get through one in less than an hour. I only buy her two a week, and use them when I really need her to be occupied with something.
She had one the other day that DH gave her, and she pretty much ignored me when I came home because of it. That's pretty big, since she greets everyone who comes home more enthusiastically than I've ever seen any dog greet anyone. Bull stick trumps favorite human walking through the front door!
And Batya, I found some that don't stink at WalMart. They come in a pack of two for $4.98. I'm going to have to call my mom and see if she will get me some at Costco now that I read about the 20 for 20 (we don't have a Costco within about seven hours). Our local pet store has some that don't seem to stink much either, but they are $4.00 apiece for 6 inches. Whatever I bought at ShopKo was stunk to the high heavens and I will never get that brand again! Ugh. |
