I'm having a very sad day today. The sister of a good friend of mine was murdered yesterday. She was a home health care worker checking up on a patient when something went very wrong and he stabbed her to death. She was only 25 years old and a very sweet girl. The man who did it has a criminal history, but the health care company was never told about it.

This is such a senseless and tragic loss, and I feel so bad for my friend.

OMG. I am so sorry. What a tragic sad thing to happen. You never think about the safety issues with that type of position.

OK. Newbie. This is how it works. If your post consists of 80% sanity, 10% stupidity and 10% all kinds of crazy, we immediately focus on the 20% b/c it discredits the 80%.

I am so very sorry. That is a horrible thing. A neighbor of mine was a social worker who would do home visits as well. They always went in pairs for that very reason.

Thank you, everyone. It's been a hard day, and it means a lot to read your kind words.

The really sad thing is that my friend's sister had put in her last report (after previously visiting the man who killed her) that he made her feel uncomfortable and she felt she should be accompanied by another worker when she visited him. Somehow, she ended up going alone again, and now we know how unfortunate that was.

I am sorry for your loss.

And this is scary as I am a home health care worker.

I know our company does background checks on us, I wonder if it is required of our clients?

Most of our clients are senior citizens.

Where did this happen? I also just read your last post. I know that our company, (which is the top, (or so we are told), in Berks County, Pennsylvania), out of 37 home health care companies), and if we had stated something like your friends' sister did, it would have been looked into immediately.

I hate to say it, but I hope your friend turns around and sues her sister's employer because of this situation.

Kimberly,

This happened in central Florida. The man who did it is 53.

From what I've heard since the initial report (where it said she'd expressed reservations about going back to his house alone) is that the company denies she ever said that. They are probably afraid of being sued for not taking her claim seriously.

Be very careful when you go on your visits. It's not worth taking chances.
