We buy a lot of books. We have a book budget.
We also check loads of them
Out from the library. We read too much to be able to own all the books we read and we don't have enough books shelf space to store them.
If we find something we love at the library and know its something well read again we buy it. Only in hardcover. I don't ever buy paperback.
When we go to the library we check out at least a dozen books at a time (each) then turn them in within two weeks and do it again

I use the library. A lot. I read the NYT book reviews, Kirkus reviews and Amazon to see what's coming out so I get on the library hold lists pretty early.
Otherwise, I buy books at used book sales and keep a reserve in the house when I don't get anything I want at the library.
Also, I scour the local libraries New Fiction and non-fiction shelves and I also keep a running list of books I want to read that is about 4 pages long so there is always something I'm looking for and putting on the hold list.
I seldom buy new books but if I do, they are from the bargain $5 or less section on Amazon or from bookcloseouts.com. I also shop betterworldbooks where the books are used but have a great selection and the money goes toward different charitable causes.
I post a weekly reading thread here every Sunday night and I have read so many books I normally would not have picked b/c of pea recommendations!
With the volume of reading I do, I can't pay retail for books that I may or may not like and may or may not keep. |

Both. 75% of the books I read come from the library. I love the ease and convenience of the library online catalog system, to place holds and renew books.
Of the books I purchase, the majority are used. I browse thrift store book shelves for titles I want to read. I only purchase about 6 new books a year.

I take them out from the library. I like to read it and return it. I don't want to store shelves full of books collecting dust. Once I've read it I won't reread it, so no point in holding on to it.

I do both - if I can get it at our library or they can get it - I'll do that, but small town so sometimes they can't. I download on my Noon or use Amazon a lot too. I try to save when I can - buy sometimes I want the actual book for a bath, beach, etc., |

I'm not sure how this'll make me sound, but ever since it made news how bedbugs can get passed along through library books I've become a bit squeamish about the library The libraries around me all separate, check, and heat, their books when they're returned, and they have the dogs check the building and the results are always posted... It's more the thought of it than anything... I was the kid lying on the floor of the library with piles of books every week... I volunteered starting at age eight... I love everything about libraries, I'm not sure how to explain the change... My mother teases me that I'm broken hearted that anything bad could happen in a library, maybe that's it... Would love to start getting back to them... |

I hadn't heard about this at all, so I did a bit of googling. Bedbugs in libraries apparently is mostly hype:
how the NY Times used fear and misinformation to spread public library hysteria
a quote from the article by Michael Potter, a professor of entomology at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY: 'Worrying about bedbugs in a public library was akin to being afraid to leave the house because you might get struck by lightning.'
so go back to your library with no fear (or at least a lot less)!!

Library all the way. I read over 100 books a year and there is no way I could buy all of those nor would I want to. I have too many books as it is. I also rarely reread books - I do occasionally but not often. |

I use the library most of the time. If it's a good buy for the kindle then I'll buy it, someone posted a link here a few days ago and I bought 11/22/63 Kindle edition for 3.99 I try to get the kindle books from the library but there is typically a long wait for the books I want.

I don't read nearly as much as some of the other Peas do. I might buy 2-3 books a month... Between my kindle and my used book store.

We live close to the state line, and the next state over has a fantastic library system. It's the same $25/year we'd have to pay to use our city library (because we don't live within the city limits) but we can order books from any library across that state. There have been VERY few times that I've not been able to find a particular book. The only (very minor) drawback is that if the branch we use doesn't have a particular new release, we can't order it from another library until it's been in the system for six months. So I've had to wait for a few books, but not many.
We're homeschoolers, so we use the library extensively anyway. The kids and I get down there about every six weeks or so, but DH goes to pick up the books that we've put on hold weekly. The librarians know us quite well, and we don't even get out our library card anymore.
We have a great used bookstore that we go to about once every six months, and I keep a running list of books I want to add to our collection and just pick them up from there. But I prefer to use the library first before I decide to buy a book to keep permanently.

Library. We have books checked out all the time. The only time I buy is for books to take to the beach. I want something I don't have to worry about getting sand or water on. Usually I then go to Sam's or get a used book.
Our county is small and our library has limited funds for new books. I also use the library in the adjacent county. They don't charge a fee (like the city library does for out of county residents) and have a broader selection. The only drawback is they have a two week return policy. |

Of course now I just went and bought 3 books on Amazon.
2 that I have read many times and I know I want to own.
1 that no one has in my library system (which is a big one). |

I will buy books if I get a gift card (especially now that I have an e-reader... much more tempting to buy on an e-reader than a physical book!). I will also buy "reference" type books, although I don't have a lot of those that have earned space on my shelves.
I prefer to check out from the library as much as possible. Although the cost is a factor, the bigger factor for me is that I don't like the visual clutter of having bookshelves with tons and tons of books on them. And I've moved way too many times... books are the WORST to move, so heavy.

I have a kindle & get a lot of free ones & the ones I do buy are usually less expensive than buying a physical book.
I realize that's not really what you asked, but if you really do get into reading again & can swing it, it's another option. |

I read a lot but I only buy books at my local thrift store. Senior day the paperbacks are 2/.25 and hardbacks are .50. Ofcourse most are not super current but actually I don't much care. A good book is timeless. I check the thrift store twice a month and usually find many that I want to read. At this time I must have 50 paperbacks stacked up. When I am finished reading them I pass them on to other seniors or send them back to the thrift store. New books are way out of my budget.

Thanks for the bedbug article... There was just an article in a Toronto paper last week (complete with pictures) of the books with the bugs that the woman had taken out... My brain knows that it's such a long shot, and I can check online the last time each branch was inspected, what was found, etc... I need to suck it up...LOL I miss all those wonderful big, heavy, art and photography books |

I can go through the drive thru at the library to pick them up
Library drive through? That's awesome. I have books on the hold shelf pretty regularly and would love to zip through the drive through without getting the kids out of the car!!! I put stuff on hold for me and the kids regularly. Our library allows you to put holds on things that they've ordered so I can often be waiting for something before the library has even received and processed it!

I used to buy all if my books but in an effort to save money started using the library much more often. I use the library's digital check out for kindle books and try to find the cheap e-books online. If I buy a book, once I've read it I turn around and resell it on amazon. |

I primarily buy books in either hard copies or for my Nook. Our local library doesn't have but 1 copy of the new releases of popular books. Even though you can get books through their intralibrary loan program, there's still only a few copies of the bestsellers.
The state of Ohio has cut funding to libraries pretty harshly over the last few years. Our library's hours are only 10-7pm Mon-Thu and 10-5pm on Fridays. Closed on Saturdays now, where they used to be open.
The type of books I prefer to read aren't typically available at our library so I just buy them. |

I have bought a few that were a waste of money. No more. |

Like many of you I am a prolific reader. I rarely go to the library because they changed their system to little paper slips that showed the due dates, which I was constantly losing so I was frequently late. I know, personal responsibility, etc.lol.
So a few years ago I joined booksfree.com and I love it. Because of where I live there was a lot of lag in shipping time so I was on the 8-9 books at a time plan, but now that I have a kindle I've dropped to 4-6 a month.
I buy some ebooks, but mostly use the library for those, and since they return automatically I don't get in trouble. |

I do both, but mostly the library. I LOVE my library. We have the whole county to get books from and if a book I want isn't in our county system (which is super rare) then they can search the whole country and get a book for me.
I can search the library catalog right from my computer and I can reserve books, renew books and pay fines from my pc as well. If it's a very popular book, holds can sometimes take awhile (maybe 3-4 weeks at most), but usually I can get my hold books within a week or two. I can also renew books up to three times, so in other words, I can keep a book out for up to eight weeks if I want to.
I take out both ebooks and regular books (I like to read both). The system for checking out ebooks was confusing to me at first, but the libary holds free classes on it. I went to one and it helped tremendously--now it's very easy.
I do still buy books. I mostly buy from the used table or clearance sales, but every once in awhile I'll buy a new book just because I want it or I don't feel like waiting to get it from the library.
I very rarely re-read books though (way too many books out there that I want to read), so buying a book generally doesn't make sense.

I don't look at the slips, either. But you should check to see whether they have the online system where you log on using your library card code. You can check the due dates, place books on hold, etc. |
