The humane society JUST called! They found penny!
Holy smokes!!!
The bad news is we aren't even in the state and won't be back until next week.
The shelter has to see if they can house her that long. I have no idea what other alternative there is.
She was found several miles from our house across several large roads.

Do you have a friend who would retrieve her and keep her until you return? Or take her to your vet for boarding?
That's wonderful that they found your beloved pet. Was she microchipped? |

She was chipped. The friends we do have who would pick her up just got a new dog themselves and aren't in a position to board penny til we get back. |

The alternatives are: adopt her out or put her to sleep.
If that dog is important to you, you will find a way to get her out. |

Oh FFS! There are more than those extreme alternatives! Give me a break.
I like the one to call a Kennel and pay a little extra for them to go pick up Penny.

The friends we do have who would pick her up just got a new dog themselves and aren't in a position to board penny til we get back.
Then find a local kennel and have them take her there. Call your vet, because they'll need proof of rabies vax in order to board her. It's office hours right now so they are available to give you suggestions on working this out. The vet should have a suggestion of a safe kennel to put her in until you return. Many vets board pets (ours does, very convenient). I really wouldn't take a chance on leaving her at the shelter until you get back. Mistakes happen. |

Do you have a groomer? Does he/she offering a boarding service? Our groomer offers boarding so I know she would help us if we were in need.
Is there a tech at your vet's office who offers boarding?

Did they tell you how much a night it would cost to keep her there? I know here there is a set fee depending on tag status (I assume your pet had tags since they called you) and then $25/night kennel fee. Oh FFS! There are more than those extreme alternatives! Give me a break.
If the shelter can't hold the dog, what do are the other alternatives for the shelter? (not the owner who can find alternatives) |

ITA. Plus, you'll likely want your vet to make sure she is alright after her "adventure".

No. Some shelters are so full that those are their options. I could sugar coat it and then she gets back and the dog is gone, but at least I wouldn't be harsh. OP said she didn't know what the alternatives are. In reality, the two I mentioned are high up on the list IF the shelter can't keep the dog that long.

You're this excited about getting Penny back, but you haven't even mentioned that you got rid of Sheldon.
I wish I could go get Penny for you. Not that I'd give her back. I'd make sure she had a good home, not the one that she was probably thrilled to escape from.

That's because it is! Especially when you take into account that she got rid of her other dog and never mentioned it here. You think Sheldon has been waiting all this time for Penny? Nope! He has gone to live in a much better place, and is probably happy that Penny got away, too.

Wasn't the dog originally lost because your husband couldn't be bothered to wait for her to come back in the house and HE LEFT her outside so he could take your son to his "seminary class?"
I would release the dog to a family that values dogs -- you obviously don't.

Thus I became PunchPrincess. )

Please, go get her or have someone go get her! Mistakes happen, unfortunately, and you would just never forgive yourself if she were accidentally put down. I hate to say it, but it is not such a remote possibility in a lot of spcas- they are overcrowded, over worked, and under staffed. It's not their fault, its just the nature of a shelter, particularly in the south.
Go get her! | |

The dog disappeared weeks ago. You can't put your entire life on hold forever because the dog is missing.
I do think it odd that she hasn't been back since people started mentioning the other dog. I don't recall another dog, so I can't comment on that.
Several alternatives were given to retrieve the dog. I hope she has now pursued one of them if she wants the dog back. |
