Take it apart with your eye. The main part is pages glued back to back. I used to do that in elementary school a lot, did you?
Then the star part is made to fold outward. So when you open the book, it pops out instead of in.

It looks like four papers folded in half and then glued together to form the middle. Then each has one paper folded into fourths inside of it with a cut-out in the center of those. 8 papers total for the base...right? It looks lovely!

It is a little nicer version of a star book, as someone else said. They fold flat but look awesome when tied open. I made one once a long time ago in a class at the LSS, but it wasn't as nice as the one you showed.

It's 5 folded pieces of paper attached at the backs of each one.
Each pice of paper has pop out on it.

Here's a chance to use some of those crazy colored pieces of cardstock. Just construct the front section to see how it works. Now getting all the measurements right will be an issue. You have the large sides, then a square box with a cut opening that folds out attached to the sides/inside corner. Not sure about the add-on on the very inside.
