I LOVE Instagram.
I love easy way I can combine other iPhone photo apps with Instagram to create just about any custom editing I want on a photo. It is such a fun way to edit photos which might not have been great to start with, and makes them better.
It's NOT just taking a good, modern, crisp perfect digital photo and making it look crappy and awful, like some people will say it is used for.
I also really love being able to share quick snaps with my phone with my family over Facebook. So easy to grab a photo, edit it a bit, and send to FB.
And, finding people to follow on IG is lots of fun, too. I follow some great photographers, some people who just post awesome photos of cats, and lots and lots of fellow scrapbookers.

I use both. Snapseed is nice because the pictures can still be printed at 4x6 without fear that my photo processor will stretch my square Instagram pics. But I also like that I can share Instagram photos. |

For me, the great about Instagram is the sharing aspect, as I don't actually use the Instagram camera or filters. I use my iPhone camera every day, but I have a pretty consistent look I like for those pictures and I use other apps to take the photos. (I use the camera in Camera+ as I prefer its controls to the default camera on my phone and the Instagram camera - though I think just like regular cameras it can be useful to try a few and see what feels right for you, as there are plenty of different camera apps and even more editing apps available.) Once I have taken and edited my photo, I save it to my camera roll and if I want to share something, *then* I go to Instagram.
I actually use two accounts on Instagram: one is public and can be viewed by anyone (my username for that account is shimelle) and another is private and can only be viewed by a circle of close, real-life friends. I use those two accounts differently, of course! As a blogger, it's handy to have a public account that goes along with the sort of things I would share on my blog or Facebook/Twitter (in fact, I can share the same image on Instagram, Facebook AND Twitter all with one click to save time). I'm happy to share things there that might be interesting to people I may not have met, so I tend to share photos of the city where I live or places I visit on the road, special events I've attended, peeks at scrapbook pages I'm working on. But I hope that I am careful enough with my public account that random strangers couldn't work out where I live and show up at my doorstep and that sort of thing.
With my private account, I'm sharing only with a small group of friends who already know where I live and are totally welcome on my doorstep at any time. All of us have private accounts, so we'll share family photos, home photos and other general things we would ask or share with a friend but not the entire world. Trying on dresses at a store and wishing you had a second opinion but you're there on your own? Instagram is perfect for that - take a picture and post it to close friends and they can help you decide. I love that I get to see pretty much daily pictures of friends' families and know how everything is going so quickly. It's also really supportive, because you can post at any time and not worry about disturbing someone like if you sent a text message in the middle of the night. When DH was admitted to hospital with something out of the blue and really serious, I had to leave the hospital at two in the morning as he was finally stable and everything, but of course I was a total basket case. I couldn't sleep a wink but I could hardly call someone at 2am. Instead I posted a note on Instagram to just those friends and sure enough, someone was awake and able to offer the kind of support one needs to hear in that situation. We've used instagram to announce babies and engagements, to wish each other happy birthdays and good luck on interviews and such, to plan parties and nights out, and mostly just to keep in touch in a daily sort of way without a complicated schedule or the time-suck vortex of something bigger like Facebook.
To be honest, if I didn't want to share my pictures with anyone like that, I wouldn't use Instagram at all - I would just take pictures through another camera app and be done with it. But I've had so much worth from the sharing aspect, and definitely find it one of my most-used apps for just that reason.

The same as everyone else said here, but also if you have teens, sometimes that is the only way to get a photo of them! Since they are all into instagram, its possible to bribe them with a quick shot instead of the 'formal' dslr.
I have 2 accounts, one personal and one public. Its nice being able to share quick shots, use them with fun filters, combine other photo apps, photos can turn out more like art photos with the right filters, which is what I love about it.
I have several different photo apps and combine them on occasion. I like to share on social media simply because we have no family in the US, and our friends are all over the country (and all over the world), so its nice to be able to take a shot here and there, of where we are, what we're doing, then print them also to scrap.

I am new to it but I love the social aspect. Just another way to connect with others. |
