you need to have a coordinating collection to use throughout the entire album?

I will be making yet another gift album for my 3rd graduating niece with the theme being Theater and all of the plays she has been in since 9th grade. The album will be at least 40 pages, mostly 2 page spreads.

In all of the gift albums I have created in the past, I have used 1-2 coordinating paper pads and embellishments. I was hoping that this time I could jump into my scrap stash and use a large number of the leftover collections/sets that I have that may not all coordinate with each other.

I know that the decision is totally up to me, but what would you do?

I would definitely use your stash! Lately I"ve been bored when working on a theme album with one specific set of papers etc. This way you can mix it up & use it up! Double win. Glitter Girl suggests to have one element repeat throughout the album ~ I have used a certain punch on a page, a camera of some sort etc. Just an idea. Have fun & happy new year, KikiPEA!

I think you can definitely mix it up. What a great way to use up your stash.

I really like smd's idea of repeating an element throughout the layouts. Maybe stars? Or circles? Or a banner?

For me, it would depend on how big the album was going to be. The ones I've made for people have been from a single event (wedding, baby shower, etc.), not something spanning multiple years, so I agree with the PPs and think I'd do what Shimelle does in her travel albums...she uses a kraft background and then repeats an element on every page so that they are cohesive. So there's still enough of a theme to pull the album together, but you can play around with patterned paper and embellies to fit the various plays or costumes or whatnot. Here's the link to Shimelle's video where she discusses this: Maintaining continuity in an album

I've only used a collection for an entire album one time. I have no plans to ever do it again. I was sick of the paper before I was done.

A mish mash from the stash every time for me! I do plan the photo layouts so facing pages always use the same paper and embelishments. But once the page turns it is a new choice all the way.

It can be fun to have a themed item that appears somewhere on every page... like the drama/comic masks. Mix them up in every size from big enough to be backgrounds to tiny stamped images hidden and have to be searched for.

Thanks, ladies!

I guess I was thinking that since the album is going to be SO big, it would just be easier to have all of the papers coordinating. It takes some of the guess work out of it and would then save on time since it needs to be done by the end of May.

I like the idea of mixing it up with one or two repeated elements. I need to get started QUICK to get it all done in time! I'm usually putting the finishing touches in it as I am running out the door for the ceremony. LOL

~Thank you Susan. I hope you have a great 2013 as well.

I would also suggest what Shimelle does and use some thing that will pull all the pages together..like the same stamp, punch, wood veneer, etc. Maybe you can use something that stands for or represents theater.

I usually mix several collections when I'm making a gift album. I believe that using a collection pulls everything together but with a little creativity you can put together your own collection. It always just takes a lot more time when you piece together your own collection.
