I decided to download Mountain Lion on my laptop so I can use iCloud to sync my pictures from my iPhone. It says it can't install due to a bad Hard drive. Everything was fine until then. Now it is stuck there since it started installing. Is there anything I can do?

Do you have an Apple Store near you? If so, I would take it there. If not, call Apple support when they open and they can advise you. Hope you get it going. Did you back up before you started the install? You will want to take that backup with you to Apple.

Don't mess with it. Take it to a Genius Bar. Stat!

You can make an appointment at the Apple website online for any Genius Bar. No matter how far the drive is-do it!

My 1 year old hard drive crashed last January--can I just say--they are Geniuses!!

We have been going through this *exact* same thing! It has been painful, I tell you. I had to have my HD replaced and ended up losing everything on my computer. Good thing I had my pictures stored on an external HD. Those survived.

Since re-installing Mountain Lion, we have still had a plethora of issues. Right now things are working, but is just doesn't seem the same since the HD was replaced.

Thanks for the advice. This is so frustrating. My pictures are saved on media hub . I backed up two programs but not some files I have. This is so annoying. I really wanted to use iCloud. I hope my computer isn't ruined.
I went online and made an appt at a Genius Bar. I hope it doesn't cost me anything and they refund me for the ml.

It is highly likely the hard drive starting experiencing issues before you downloaded Mountain Lion. Have you performed a Disk Repair since you received the error message?

When was your last backup? You will want to take a FRESH backup of your data NOW. DO NOT overwrite the old one. You don't want to restore corrupt data when the hard drive is repaired.

iCloud does not sync your pictures from your iPhone. Using PhotoStream will allow you to "sync" all photos across all your Apple devices. You need iPhoto if you want to move your pictures from your iPhone to a hard drive for storage and later use.

Call Apple first and see if they can help you with the Disk Utility and hard drive repairs. Again, I must stress you need to ensure your data is backed-up. Once a hard drive starts failing on an Apple product, it will more than likely have to be replaced down the road. Good backups are essential.

I would keep ML. Chances are, there was already something wrong with your HD and ML just will not install because it is defective in some way. You are going to love having your photos taken with the iPhone automatically show up in iPhoto on your Mac. If you need a new HD, on the upside, it will give you a chance to upgrade to a larger one. We replaced the HD with a bigger one on the MacBook Pro that I had before getting this one. Well, DH replaced it and I reinstalled everything back on it from back up. It did not take long at all. The Genuis Bar will have you back up and running in no time. Be sure to come back and let us know how it went. Good luck.

Good News and Bad News:

I went to the Genius Bar and they could not back anything up.

We erased my hard drive and tried installing mountain line and it worked perfectly. I didn't need a new hard drive. They said this can just happen. Sometimes a hard drive needs to be reformatted. I did back up two of my big programs but lost documents and downloads. There were a couple I didn't want to lose but not end of the world.

It may be a blessing because now I don't need to go through hundreds of documents and 100's of downloads and 100's of bookmarks. I was going to do that after I installed ML to clean up my computer. I do like Mountain Lion a lot.

I was irritated that I had to buy photo'11 to use iCloud. I am working on importing my pictures and a couple of other things so I can get my computer back to the way I like it.

Hopefully everything runs smoothly from here.

Thanks for the help.

Back up, back up, back up! All you need is to have this happen once and you learn the hard way. Go get one of those small back up drives from Costco or online, and start backing up your computer weekly. Sometimes though there is a conflict with something you downloaded, and that will cause problems, and then you add the problem back to your computer. I am a MAC user since the 80's and have lost my share of computers. I have two semi-dead computers in storage. Don't want to get rid of them as their is stuff on the HD I would like. Makes a case for good ole paper documents!
