I haven't had time to scrap in 3 years and want to get back into it this year. I've never had a die cutting machine (too little space/$$) but My daughter is getting married in the fall and I had been thinking a Cameo would be helpful but I don't know a lot about it. I plan to spend time searching for threads here and videos on Youtube.

My father builds models of WW2 planes. I was looking at his workshop over the holidays and he was showing me how he was having trouble cutting out the tiny letters/numbers that go on the sides of the planes..he cuts them out of thin vinyl. I commented that a scrapbooking die cut machine could do that easy.

Well, now he's very interested and has offered to buy one for me to learn to use, so I can cut his letters when he wants them. But first, I want to make sure I can get the style of font he wants. How can I do that? I searched on the Silhouette site for World War 2 fonts but didn't come up with anything.

I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with learning to use a Cameo...do you have links to share with me? I've looked at some of the threads here today, but y'all use abbreviations sometimes and I get lost (zing? NKN? what are those? will google..)

Anyway, if you have any links to tutorials or threads that will help me get started, please share. I've missed reading this board..

Thanks!

You can use any font you have installed on your computer, not just ones that you buy from the Sil store.

http://hans.presto.tripod.com/fonts/stencil5.html has some aircraft fonts, I think you'll love the cameo! I took the Kerri Bradford class at jessicasprague.com on the cameo and found it to be a good class.

First off, I absolutely LOVE your avi pic!! Our little baby just turned 8 this past year and looks a lot like yours!

You will definitely be able to cut fonts for your Dad with the Cameo. I'm not sure what specific font you're looking for, but do a google search for 1940s free fonts and there are quite a few good ones out there. All you have to do is download to your computer and the Cameo can cut it. No Silhouette store necessary for that. In the Silhouette software off to the side there's a scroll bar with all of the fonts on your computer and you can select whatever you want from there.

I haven't tried to cut anything with vinyl on mine so I'm not sure how small you'll be able to cut the letters. I'm sure some other Peas can advise you on that.

There's all kinds of helpful videos on YouTube to learn everything you ever wanted to know about the Cameo. Just type it in the search bar and browse away. Sorry, I don't have any specific links or channel recommendations.

I say go for it!

Thanks, scrapcat! That's my Peanut who will be 6 yo in a couple of weeks. He is my "empty nest" baby. That pic is a couple of years old....I also have a beautiful black/tan longhair girl now that I took from a woman who couldn't take care of her anymore. I need to change my pic to show her too! Doxies are like potato chips....

I will be looking on Youtube...

There's also sites that have free fonts that you can download as well such as dafont.com.

I kind of learned how to use mine myself so don't have any links to share. But, if you can use Word, you can use this machine, it is so easy to use, you will love it!

Go right now to the website and download the software and you can start messing with it. You will be able to open any font already on your computer. You can do everything except obviously cut them out! Practice changing the sizes, welding letters, etc.

Also, once you have the software installed, go open your free account in the online shape store and start collecting your free shapes, they are released every Tuesday. If you do it today you can get this weeks shape and then turn right around tomorrow and download the next one. This will also give you some shapes to play with.

There are all sorts of free shapes on the web to that you can use and your machine will come with a CD with I think 50 shapes for you to play with!

Have fun!

Thanks, mebarnet! I'll do that..I'm having lunch with Dad on Friday to discuss...I'll be able to actually show him something!

Now he's asking if I have an inkjet printer to print some of his tiny stuff....wonder if I can talk him into getting me one of those, too?

Watch out knot, you can turn any file into a print and cut also! But that is a story for another day, start simple or you will get overwhelmed with what this machine can really do.

I would check out the bundle deals at oh my crafts. I know some Peas did have an issue with slow shipping but now that the holidays are over, they may be back to normal. I ordered mine from them in 2011. I bought the bundle with the sketch pens and the vinyl. They generally have coupon codes too so before you purchase, do a google search for coupon codes.
