I have used my point and shoot camera that takes videos (Canon G11) and my dslr to make videos in the past. Both have come out really nicely. Now I am using my iPhone 5. The video is really great. A couple of times I have gone into Best Buy looking for a decent but inexpensive video camera and I just don't know enough about video to make a decision, so I have just stuck with what I can easily get to.

Thank you both for your replies. I have also went to Best Buy and like you I wasn't sure what I should be looking for. I am not the most tech savvy person. I saw one online that had a media card and since my laptop reads media cards, I thought that might be a good option. I have also looked at the flip cameras. I used my Droid X for a while to make videos then when I updated the OS it would never upload again. Again thanks and I will put your information to use |

I was watching a youtube channel that was discussing good cameras for video:
There top pick was the canon Rebel T3i...SLR and pretty pricey if you just planning on recording Youtube videos.
Samsung Galaxy S3--has stabilizer and accepts SD cards for more storage.
Iphone 4s and higher...might need external mic (wired one is about 20 dollars)
Ipad..I have extra lenses and case that hooks to tripod so I can record from there.
It just depends on what kind of videos you want to do...if carft indoor ones at close range, anything should do...just make sure it records sound well |

If you want something for YouTube videos, specifically, then a webcam can be a great way to go. You can get a full 1080p HD camera for about $100. Much less of investment than a dSLR. But it's not a great option if you want to be able to take it with you somewhere, since it needs to be attached to a computer.
Below are pictures of my camera set-up.
The boom arm that comes over the top of the monitor is actually a microphone stand. If you are using a lighter camera, like a webcam or a flip camera, this is a MUCH cheaper option than a tripod with a boom arm designed for video or photography. This microphone stand cost less than $20.00. It is not a good alternative if you will be using a DSLR or a video camera as it is not designed to support that kind of weight.
Attached to the boom are two Logitech HD webcams. They are attached with electrical tape. One camera records in full 1080p (the one on the left in the picture) and that's the one I use for recording and broadcasting. The camera is powered by and records directly to my computer.
The lamps are full spectrum daylight lamps with diffusers. They're architect style floor lamps & articulate for easy adjustment.
The monitor is a 32" LCD TV. I control the cameras through the computer. I snap the camera controls and video preview window to one side of the screen while I work & on the other side I have Pandora or Netflix going.
I use Adobe Premiere to edit my videos. I add narration after editing with a separate microphone. You can see it in the first picture on the very right edge of the photo. This also is powered by and records directly to my computer.
I think that's everything! Let me know if you have any questions. |

Kathryn thanks for the view of your set up. I always wondered how you filmed.
Marypats I have the Mykayama Ipad Movie mount and lenses. I love the mount because rather than taking lens off and on while filming, I can slide it t the side. It also has two shotguns to attach an external mic.
Here is a link to a video about it. Movie Mount
I love mine.. you can record at 9% angle. |

on ipad and can't edit..not record at angle ,I meant edit at angle. How much you can angle to record would depend on your tripod. |

I use a webcam and have a similar set-up to Kathryn's with the webcam and a microphone clamped to a microphone stand that has a boom. It's a very flexible and inexpensive solution.
Mary Pats and super, I love the iPad set-up! Thank you for sharing!

I use my Canon Rebel & love it... but probably wouldn't invest in it unless you needed a camera as well. |

Just got a newer Canon Rebel T4i to replace my much older one. I have not used it for video yet. My DD tried to use for Youtube, but it kept making that focus noise. Need to read the manual. |

For those that use a smart phone, how do you mount it somewhere so that you can use two hands? |

I am having the same issue with my Rebel T4i and need to read the manual. I did my an external mic for it because I didn't like the sound quality. ATR3350 Lavalier microphone by audio-technica. I think it was $17.00 at Amazon.
For Iphone I have on my want list the Glif or Glif + (20.00 or 30.00 for glif+)
the plus is $10.00 more but it may be worth it to have that extra piece that wraps over phone. It also can screw onto your keychain so you can take it anywhere. I think my mic works with my iphone also.

I have the Glif and I would really recommend it. It is so easy to use and I felt like it was really secure. I got it for Christmas and just used it for the first time and love it!

I have a panasonic HD camcorder (that I really like) and also a logitech hd webcam. I use either for making videos.
I put my video camera on a monopod, attached to the card catalog that is behind me, so I can record my work surface over my shoulder. Works well. |
