For those that do not have Facebook and want to read what they said:

October Afternoon
STATEMENT REGARDING UPCOMING CHA SHOW IN ANAHEIM

October Afternoon regretfully announced today that it will not be exhibiting its new 2013 spring lines at the upcoming CHA show in Anaheim, California.

It has been widely reported that the United States is in the midst of a severe flu epidemic. Over the past two weeks, much of October Afternoon's staff has become infected with Type A Influenza, leaving the company short-handed in all its departments.

Due to the shortage in manpower caused by the flu outbreak, as well as concerns for the health and well-being of its employees and others attending the CHA show, the difficult decision was made to skip the event.

"CHA is a very important event for our company. However, when so many of our people are sidelined by illness, it greatly curtails our ability to adequately and effectively setup a booth and exhibit at the show. At the same time, we feel it would be irresponsible for us to risk exposing fellow travelers or CHA attendees to this severe strain of the flu," said October Afternoon CEO Jon Denton.

Sneak peeks of October Afternoon's new lines are forthcoming and the company is in the process of developing alternative methods for showing and marketing its new product lines to its customers.

I applaud OA's decision too - a very nasty and contagious virus has hit some of my neighbors as well as several of my family members - probably passed around because we were all visiting for the holidays - and it doesn't take much exposure to suddenly have many sick people. I appreciate OA putting health first.

Hope they get better soon. That is a smart idea on the companies part not to attend with the flu being so bad right now. Can you image working a convention feeling that way?

This seems odd to me. Is it true they aren't on the floor plan/ list of companies attending CHA?
Registering for CHA, building a booth, flight and rentals cost THOUSANDS of non-refundable dollars. Not to mention they would have to build a booth and ship all of their product to CHA well ahead of time -- it would already have to be there, and they should be there already, too !

My parents did major trade shows for another industry, as does DH's dad, and logistically and financially, cancelling a trade show the day before it starts makes no sense whatsoever.

I'm going to give OA the benefit of the doubt on this one and applaud their decision. The flu should stay home and airplanes and closed in arenas are a great place to spread it!!!

A couple of years ago when swine flu started my company told our external employees to work from home instead of traveling to us. They also cancelled all conventions that people were going to attend.

Flu is getting bad this year. We've had a lot of regulars out and we have new peoe on boarding everyday. Who knows what's being brought in.

OA made the right choice.

My sisters company was hit hard starting in early December and it is proving very difficult on everyone. People either have been out for weeks because they are sick or now family members have it. Their sales department has cancelled all events and meetings with prospective clients.

I feel for them.

I'm hoping everyone at OA is on the mend soon. My hubby came down with the flu right before Christmas despite having a flu shot. The doctor told him that this was not uncommon and that apparently the flu vaccine was a "miss" this year in tackling Type A influenza.

And yet they tell everyone to go out and get flu shots. And the mayor of Boston had declared a health emergency and is providing free ones.

This is a little bit different situation, but my first CHA was in GA in February 8 years ago. The flu was not as bad as it is now, but I actually came home with it from the show.

If that is the case for them, I for one, am glad they are staying home for their sakes as well as the retailers. That was the WORST I have ever felt and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I hope they all feel better soon.

It appears you think there's a conspiracy surrounding our decision to withdraw from the CHA show ...
No, Jon, I do not think there is any conspiracy theory. I don't think my post suggested so, or that I think you have any other motives. I am sorry you are sick, but I do hope you will believe that I wasn't suggesting anything nefarious on OA's part. I happen to *heart* October Afternoon big time -- but as I said, the decision to withdraw from a major trade show day(s) before it starts does strike me as odd. Nothing more than that, just odd.

As I said in my post -- my parents and my DH's father both have their own businesses and attend trade shows, with only 4 employees in one company and 6-7 in the other. I completely understand the cost and brutal personal tole involved in owning and working for a small business.

Jon,

Please let everyone know at OA (when you are feeling better) that there is much love, care and concern at 2peas for you guys. We pray that you guys have a speedy recovery and hope you and all your families can get back to normal healthy lives. Also, for all your healthy co-workers...that they remain healthy and just take it one day at a time as they try to run OA with short staff.

Big hugs to you guys! (only not real ones....I don't want what you have. LOL)

The flu is really out of control in some areas and others...almost nothing. Sorry to hear they were unable to attend, I am betting the fee for a booth is steep, but good on them for not infecting the planes, hotels, restaurants and CHA visitors!!

I came down the the flu right before Christmas - was quarantined over Christmas actually, and now have some sort of stomach thing that's best summed up as, "Ugh, gross..." I'm glad you guys decided to do what's best health wise - for everyone who is sick, and everyone healthy that you didn't expose to these cooties... Hope everyone feels better soon

I feel so bad for everyone at OA especially the owners who are struggling with the financial aspect of canceling the show and sick employees. I have recently fell in love with OA. I must say I fell hard. I have been buy OA products like crazy. I plan to buy a lot more of thier products in the future. Any company who thinks of their employees like they do deserves some of my money.
