I realize that it's not important to other people, but I like "ethnic" names to match the last name. It's just a personal preference.
Me too. I know it's silly, since the kid can have an Irish last name and their mother could have been born in Italy, or Russia, or Korea, or whatever, but I still do a double take when I see a name like Sergei McHugh or Siobhan DeStefano or something.

BUT -- If you DH has an issue with naming him Alexander, would he be OK with naming him Alessandro and calling him Alex?
Personally, if my DH objected to a name, I'd pick a name that was nothing like it when naming my kids.
