And all I have to do is promise to not spend it drugs, gambling or booze. How nice huh?

I get a call from a very very heavy indian accented man name Ryan Smith, telling me I have been chose randomly to receive $7,000.00 from the government all because I have paid my taxes and good credit for 6 months. No need to ever pay this money back once again because I have paid my taxes and good credit for 6 months. Also he encouraged me to do something good with my money like remodel my home, take a vacation, pay off school loans etc etc but do not do anything illegal with it. Now all I have to do is give him my checking account number or give him my credit card number. So they can put the money in my acct. How generous is our government.

I asked him who he worked for and he said the US government, I could hear a whole bunch of other telemarketers in the background all very heavy Indian accents too. He said their office is in Washington DC.

2 hours later I get another call from another guy telling me the same thing, same accent different American name.

I realize the US is in such great financial shape and since I'm in the minority with such good credit and paying my taxes for 6 months I should be rewarded.

It makes me so mad they have my cell phone number but it's laughable that they think I'd fall for this and sadder knowing these dip wads are ripping people off.

My 86 year old mother was scammed by someone pretending to be Publishers Clearinghouse. She is a smart lady but fell for this thinking she had won a million dollars. It did seem legit until they asked for her bank account and credit card.

There will be a special place in hell for these scumbags.

There is a scam going locally where people call you and pretend to be the local power company, and say your meter is broken or your account is past due and you need to give them your bank information right now to remedy the situation.

Seems to me that scammers are becoming more sophisticated and we need to be more alert to this these days.

You know girls, I think we should all treat our older family members to phones with caller ID. I do not answer a single phone call unless the ID shows me I know the person calling. I check my voice mail a little later, if it was from someone important there is always a message from him/her. The telemarketers and the scammers don't leave messages.

So very true, these calls are coming from UNKNOWN. I always answer my phone, but you make a good point if they are legit they'll leave a message.

Shecallsmenana, that makes me SO mad!
I have good credit, pay my taxes and promise not to spend the $$ on anything illegal. (fortunately for me, drugs are now legal in my state, I'm over 21 so booze is ok, and as long as I gamble in a state sanctioned manor that's not a no-no either!)

Then again, with an attitude like this, maybe that's why I didn't get a call...

Any weird telemarketing calls you receive should be reported on the Do Not Call list as a complaint. I started doing that and after a couple of months, the calls stopped.

Not to scare you but to make to more aware:

We were told at a seminar, run by our Consumer Protection department, that once a person has responded to one of these scams and provided details their number will be added to a list that is sold on to other scammers.

So as well as looking at caller ID and any kind of telemarket blocking service you may wish to consider persuading an older person to change their phone number if they have already been scammed.

I kept getting calls saying that I had a computer virus and that they would help me fix it over the phone. Of course, I just needed to let them run my computer. LOL I kept hsnging up, but they would eventually call back.

Finally, I played along, told him I had to tend to my kid and could I call him back. Idiot gave me his number. I blocked the call on my phone. I started getting calls with the same story. I finally ended up blocking any numbers that were blocking my caller id. I haven't had a call from then since.
