Am I the only person who hates them? So many people I know are getting them.
I understand that they're fashionable, but they're permanent! I would hate to be permanently stuck in the outfits I regarded as fashionable 10 / 20 / 30 years ago.
Why do people get them? What's the appeal? It just seems to be very painful doodling to me. | |

You're not the only person who hates them (I used to hate them but have since changed my mind), but you may want to educate yourself to know that most tattoos are a hell of a lot more than "doodling". A lot of people will take great insult to your observation about them. You're entitled to not like them, and the great thing is that you don't need to get one. However, grand sweeping generalizations such as you present won't exactly make you friends or garner understanding about why people get tattoos. | |

I'm not a fan, but there are people I really like and respect who are tattooed, so it's one of those "live and let live" things for me. |

I think hate is a pretty strong word. For me?? No way, too painful and too permanent. I know people who have regretted theirs and spent their lives in long sleeves or spending money on laser treatment.
However, I have seen some pretty ones and as they don't affect me personally I don't have any problem with them. They are just a matter of personal taste.
A younger relative had a fancy lock tattooed on the back of her neck and told us "my boyfriend has the key"  Very romantic when you are together but now that it's over?? I think having one done for yourself is more realistic.
But my taste changes too quickly anyway! I would hate to be stuck with the dolphin or bluebird tattoo that was so popular when I was young. (no offense to anyone with any of those tattoos)

I don't like them but some of my friends are tattooed and really its their choice. It doesn't bother me a bit. I will never get one but to each their own. |

For me it has both g to do with what is 'fashionable'. I love tattoos and have quite a few. They're permanent artwork that can be memories of a person or a moment in time. For me I have tattoos that signify my children, my family, moments in time and tbh some are just because I liked the picture!
People ask what I will look like at 75 and a grandmother with tattoos everywhere, I say pretty amazing!
Each to their own though, as long as you don't judge me for my rocking tats, I won't judge you. |

I dislike poorly done, spur of the moment tattoos that are simply a fashion statement or a reflection of the lack of good judgment of the person wearing them. Sometimes I feel bad for people stuck "wearing the same outfit" so the speak when it is clear the outfit was picked in haste and made cheaply.
I think well done high quality tattoos are an art form. I particularly like ones with deep meaning to the owner even if they are not what I would choose.
I have a tattoo. I'd probably have more if I could afford to have good ones done. My small tattoo has a deep meaning to me that I don't discuss with anyone. Even my husband doesn't know why I really have it and what it means to me to see it each day. To anyone else it is a tiny rose on my ankle they might never notice. | |

I have many very good friends that have tattoos. Actually, now that I think about it, almost everyone I'm close to except DH. My mom had two, my sister has about four, Both of my SILs, my BFF etc...
One good family friend is a tattoo artist and has sleeves. I love these people and their tats don't change how i feel about them one bit. i also don't judge others by their tattoos. I form my opinions from their whole picture.
Tattoos can be very meaningful for the people that have them... But tattoos are not for me. I do not love a single piece if artwork enough to display it permanently on my body.

I am not a fan of tattoos - but I have seen so many poorly done ones.
What gets me is when people get them that have no money to pay for school lunches, health care, etc.. but get massive tattoos. Just doesn't seem right.

OP - let me ask you this:
When you ask a question of this nature, in the fashion that you did...I mean, asking an audience made up of hundreds of different people, from all walks of life, with all types of interests and many different tastes...is your goal really to learn if you are the ONLY person who hates tattoos or is it merely a passive aggressive way of insulting those that have them? Maybe I'm just cranky, but it sure seems like it's more the latter than the former.
I absolutely respect individual tastes and I know tattoos aren't for everyone. I get that. And there are some bad tattoos out there made with little thought by people who most likely regret their spur of the moment permanent marking on their body.
However, there are also people like me who, while always wanting one, waited until later into adulthood to get one. People like me who have tattoos designed with much thought, emotion and meaning. People like me who consider tributes to their loved ones, both past and present, much more than a trendy 'doodle' that goes in and out of fashion like straight legged jeans and leg warmers.
So, maybe, the next time you're curious, instead of being flip and condescending, you could ask the person you're curious about, to explain the meaning behind their tattoo. I love it when people ask me about mine, because it gives me a chance to explain their history and I think most people, even when they don't understand the appeal, at least better appreciate the motivation in others when they hear the stories. I mean, if that's what you're really trying to understand.

Well said Kristen - and exactly the reasoning behind the one that I have. I waited until I was 40. It is a tribute to my Dad, who we lost in 2005. He was Irish, and I have a Celtic Shamrock on my shoulder. Unless I'm wearing something revealing, nobody knows it is there.

I read an article a year or two ago about the safety and issues with some of the inks and ink colors. Apparently it's an ignored health/safety issue. That is the only thing I think about when I see tatts. So many of my friends have them and I can't imagine "hating" anything about them.  |

You are not the only one who would never get a tattoo. I would never want to wear the same article of clothing every day for the rest of my life. My wedding ring is the only thing I would wear every day forever, but other than that I wouldn't wear the same jewelry every day for decades, either. I kind of understand tattoos that have meaning, but I still wouldn't get one. A piece of jewelry can have meaning, too, but it doesn't require pain to get it.
Someone told my DH that he should get a tattoo, and he responded, "Let me get this straight. Isn't getting a tattoo like using a sewing machine on your skin? No, thanks."
Taste can change. Designs I liked in my youth are not at all appealing to me now. I can't imagine having a tattoo that I might eventually learn to dislike.
I'm not going to judge anyone who has tattoos, though. I have a few friends who have tattoos. That's their choice, and it doesn't bother me. |

There are some awefully tacky tats out there; however, I have seen some that are absolutely gorgeous. My friend has gorgeous tats (I think it helps that her skin is that beautiful milk-white skin). But I've never seen tats like hers on anyone else.
Having said that: 1) I have thought of getting one myself, but I don't think I want teeny needles digging into my skin for an extended period of time 2) I have seen tattoos that are just awful (swastikas and racist/sexist ones) or 3) poorly executed or 4) WTF were you thinking--i.e. one's name across one's chest (spelled backwards)(I still want to know why).
I think tats are the norm and not the exception, so I don't think that people are as original or artsy as they think they are when getting one.
On a final note, Tribal tattoos on a hot guy just ramp up the hotness to another level.

I don't like them very much. More, I don't think they make the person "cooler" or somehow more attractive or interesting. And even from comments on this thread some people (who gave them) think they do so.
That said, I do have one in a very private spit and since I can't see it usually I forget I have it. It has a lot of meaning for me. Since I got one I definitely respect more the commitment of getting one, and the pain you have to endure.
Sometimes I do see very elaborate tattoos that are very artistic and I definitely admire them and ask the person about them. They are always pleased to be asked and I have heard some wonderful stories.
Then there was the chick at the pharmacy who had a Care Bear tattoo on her neck and when I asked her about it she said she just wanted something different. Ok then |

I never liked them. But, I've changed my mind over the last few years.
At present, I am contemplating getting one in honor of my grandmother. Haven't quite got the art figured out. Though, I do want to use her signature from one of the cards she sent me.
Recently, I saw a before & after pic of someone who had some major back surgery done at some point in their life. Serious scarring, which I would imagine would have made the person so self-conscious. They ended up getting a tattoo that covered it. The tat was beautiful! I can only imagine how life changing that 'doodle' was for that individual.

I really like them but I am not sure why since they are hard to see? I love Peace , doves, the word, what it means but I don't like the peace sign. ( the circle one.) but anyway I really dig the white ink. |

I have seven. They are all small and are not fashionable.
I have a flower with my children's names...not going to regret that one, ever.
I have intertwined wedding bands...this year will be DH and my 15th wedding anniversary. And they are small, so if anything does happen, easily coverable.
I have a four leaf clover for my Irish family.
I have a modified set of Aerosmith wings (no circle or band name, just the wings). A friend of mine has a matching one. Mine is purple, my favorite color, hers is blue, her favorite. We both love Aerosmith, but we got the tattoo to remember our 6 hour road trip with our four kids (aged between 1 - 7) and how singing Aerosmith the whole way kept all the kids entertained. It was fun for them and lots of fun for us.
I have the word "family" in my dad's handwriting. He wrote it for me in the hospital on the day we had to go home after he had a massive heart attack. One of my sisters has one from before his heart attack. Since having his quadruple bypass surgery, my other sister is saving up to get hers.
I have my name, Tara, in Sanskrit, which means star in Sanskrit. I found out in 2004 that my biological father (mom married stepdad when I was three and he adopted me when I was eight) had another child the year before I had my own daughter. Her mom named her Starr, but no one knew the name connection until about 2 years ago. She is one of the happiest surprises of my life. I have a purple star with my Sanskrit name because purple is Starr's favorite color, and mine as well.
I have a "prettied" version of an Edelweiss flower. I think the actual flower is kind of ugly, lol. We were stationed in Germany for 3 years and were fortunate enough to visit Garmisch several times. That area is my favorite place in Germany. It is gorgeous. I loved living in Germany, by far my favorite place we were stationed.
I have three more that I want to get. They all mean something very special to me.
I know a guy whose mother was a beauty queen in high school, so he has a pinup with the face made to look like she did when she was young.
I know someone who doesn't like Disney, but has a Tinkerbell for her mom, who just loved Tinkerbell.
I know someone who got a grim reaper after a near fatal accident, to remind him to be more careful and aware of his surroundings.
Everyone has their reason to get what they do. You won't know the reason just by looking at it. You might thing skulls, pinups, and cartoon characters are just fashionable, but in many cases, there's a reason for it.
*ETA. I don't think it's fashionable to get a tattoo now, just more accepted than it was even 20 years ago.
My mom swore she'd never get one because when she was growing up "only biker chicks and tramps got tattoos." Funny, now that it's more accepted (and all three of her daughters got pretty, meaningful ones), she decided to get one...and did, just after her 53rd birthday. |

i actually know guy who just got a doodle his daughter did when she was about 5 tattoed on his leg. it's an honest to god doodle of an octopus. not my style at all, but i can appreciate the sentiment behind it. i can't pot a pic here tho, he's a friend and i would hate for that to get back to him. |

I wouldn't get one but I know people who do have them. The thing that I don't like is when someone has them so prominently and heavily that it's distracting. Like that woman on American Pickers. She's so pretty but when I see her, all I see are those tattoos around her neck. But hey, it's their choice. |

Seems to me that an audience of hundreds of different people is a pretty good place to start! My goal is as stated - something I have never liked, and has traditionally been regarded as fairly uncommon, seems to be becoming more common. I'm asking a question about what appears to me to be a changing trend. I have no interest in insulting people. I'm too old to get involved in passive aggressive nonsense.
So, maybe, the next time you're curious, instead of being flip and condescending, you could ask the person you're curious about, to explain the meaning behind their tattoo. I love it when people ask me about mine, because it gives me a chance to explain their history and I think most people, even when they don't understand the appeal, at least better appreciate the motivation in others when they hear the stories. I mean, if that's what you're really trying to understand.
I certainly did not set out to be "flip or condescending". It was a simple question. I apologise profoundly to anyone who felt that way, but that wasn't my aim. I don't get to control what people might read into my words. All I can do is say what my intention was. And I do ask people I know, if it's appropriate. The usual answer is along the lines of "I don't know", or "I thought it looked cool". I think lots of things look cool - in the '80s I thought I looked great with huge shoulder pads - but I'd hate to have them permanently implanted! That's what I struggle to understand - the "no turning back" aspect. | |

And every time I see a post that starts with "Am I the only one?" I immediately know some PVM dram starting is afoot and I really want to respond "YES, YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE ON THE PLANET! So go home and cry into your pillow about being weird!"

Really, what ARE the chances of you being the ONLY ONE on this message board with its thousands and thousands of members of all ages, backgrounds, nationalities, cultures etc etc who dislikes something?

Ink is a personal choice, and the choice of ink is often very personal. I have two designs, a rose which I got as a fundraiser with my husband, my best mate, his wife and his brother. My best mates daughter (our god daughter) has Cystic Fibrosis, and we all got inked as part of a 'sponsored painathon' lol. We raised a LOT of money and a LOT of awareness. Her mother and I got the rose after the song "65 roses" which is about CF, and the boys got the CF logo which is a smiley face with rainbow coloured hair. Very personal, and I like the fact that it's permanent, especially since we don't know how long she'll be with us. My other design is two dolphins with my sons names on them. My sons are both Aspie, and both had major speech breakthroughs after hand feeding a wild dolphin. Again, very personal and something I am happy to have a permanent reminder of. I get that ink is not for everyone, and that's fine. But I think your attitude is a bit flip and condescending. |

Then maybe don't begin your question with 'Am I the ONLY one' when I'm sure you realize you are not.
And don't equate something you know many other people have a great taste for as a 'doodle' equal to nothing more than a passing fashion trend.
If you truly want to educate yourself on something you don't understand but would like to, rather than something you don't understand for which you're just looking for validation from people who feel the same way as you, try to steer clear of inflammatory language.
