Some years ago a scrapper (Rockester, I think) wrote about getting your money's worth out of scrapbooking tools/supplies.
She decided that each use of something on a page was "worth" a dollar. So if you have a $15 punch you get your money's worth if you use it on 15 pages. Same could be applied to a Cricut (and carts), Cameo, embossing folders (don't forget the embossing machine) or even things like bottles of stickles, mists, stamps or inks.
What purchases have you gotten your money's worth out of? Which ones nowhere near? |

The only way I will ever get my money's worth is in the sense of how many hours of enjoyment I have gotten from my purchases. To me, with my layouts, it's not all about how many, but rather about whether or not the stories I wanted to tell actually got told. |

There are almost no items I have gotten my money's worth out of, but the first thing that comes to mind is my sizzix. I won the actual machine in a layout contest when it was a new item, and afterward I added dies that I could get cheap, like at SB yard sales. So even though I have not much invested over all compared to retail, I just never used it to make it 'pay for itself' so to speak.
My sillouette is another item that hasn't paid for itself. I have the SD; got it on a big sale right before the release of the Cameo. I have printed alot of stuff but have to add the subscription cost in, too, and that pup will be paying for itself for quite a while. It is one of the reasons I never invested in a die cut machine; after my sizzix wasn't used I just couldn't see paying hundreds of dollars for die cuts.
I know a girl with over 175 cricut carts~ she uses the cricut for everything, but it will never ever pay for itself; no way.
My xyron, no, my cropadile, no, my trimmers - the fiskars ones hell yes, but the more expensive Dahle, no.
So I don't even have that many tools and I would say it is a big fat NO.
And this is from someone who scraps a whole lot! |
My choice is to not take it personally - people have opinions. Particularly people here.-Peabay 12/29/11

This is the same for me, I don't do the guilt thing I use my supplies for cards, gifts and layouts. I use them to make things for my co-workers, family and the 4-H club.
Scrapbooking is fun and social for me so I don't worry about getting my money's worth out of individual items or tools

Totally for me. I don't buy things unless I know I'll use them. I'm one who tends to start using a new item almost immediately, and I have many, many items from years ago that I still use fairly frequently. |

I actually totally agree that if your supplies make you happy that is what counts- even if it is just organizing them or looking at the bottles of flowers- I was thinking more of tools, and obviously scrapbook pages are not the only way to use them (like cards and art journals or other art).
Anyway, I just threw the idea out for discussion. |

Yes I have! I enjoy my crafty time and playing with all my stamps, dies, paper, glitter, and everything else!
It is my fun time, my hobby
Does a golfer have anything to show for the four hours or so he spent on the course and paid for the greens fees? Probably not, but I am sure he enjoyed his morning on the course.
SSpo why should we have to justify how much we spent on a tool, our supplies, etc. to show how much we used it???
If you buy supplies and use most of them sooner or later, the cost is irrelevant, if you had fun creating. Only if you continue to buy stuff you never use, then the cost should be an issue. |

What I've gotten my money's worth out of:
Definitely my circle punches and my heart punch! I've used them dozens of times, and I think they each cost less than $10.
My alphabet stamps. Each set was under $15, and I have or will use all of them dozens of times.
Martha Stewart alphabet punches.
Embossing powders and heat tool.
Basic packs of brads (the cheap solid color ones, not the fancy expensive ones). They were like $3-5 per pack, and each pack includes several dozen. I've used each pack on at least a few LOs, so definitely worth it!
Not so much:
My Slice. I posted earlier that I've only made titles with on 21 LOs, and I've used it for die cuts on maybe a dozen cards, but I spent probably over $150 on the machine and accessories.
ETA: I agree that we shouldn't have to justify the cost of our supplies by the output we get from them, but for the purposes of making future purchasing decisions I think it's helpful (for me, at least) to evaluate what I've really used and what I haven't. After doing the math, I know that it's probably not worth it for me to buy another die cutting machine if this one breaks, I'm better off spending that money on stamps and letter stickers instead. Maybe I just think that way because I'm a grad student and therefore on a tighter budget than many people here.

Your question: Have you gotten your money's worth out of your stuff?
It seems to me that would be different for each person. Because:
1) To me, $1 seems kind of high. Using a $15 dollar tool for 15 layouts does not seem like it is my money's worth.
2) Like others have mentioned...value is not necessary monetary.
So to answer your question: On some items yes, but I still have whole bunch that I could get more happiness out of.

Only a few things would I say I have gotten my money's worth - my paper trimmers, my scissors, my ATG other things I love and I may be getting close - Art Philosophy cartridge probably getting close as I have used it a lot but still have a ways to go but I plan to continue using it. I have tons of punches and like them but most not used enough to pay for them - my corner rounder from CM that was one of my first purchases I am sure has been paid for and my cropodile I have used it a lot over the years.
Most of my stamps, cricut cart, dies, punches not even close. Like others though most of my supplies make me happy and that is what counts. Being happy is priceless |

I have easily gotten my moneys worth out of my collection of butterfly punches and my fiskars cloud punch...as a matter of fact, anyone who looks at my LO's probably wishes I would put them away forever, I'm a little excessive. As for all of the rest of my stuff...there's no way, I wish A's would just use my house as a storage facility, I could look at the stuff for a while and give it back to them, that would be perfect. |

I HAVE got my money's worth out of my Zip'eMate, Big Shot AND AccuCut GrandeMark. I've cut tons of cards out for kids crafts at church, cards to give to friend and card blanks to give to my original card making friend in Colorado. If I haven't paid for all of them yet, I soon will!
I don't do just cards, I'm making perpetual calendars and cookbooks that I make a little wood stand for. I'm binding them with wire or coil binding.
Oh, I know I've got my money's worth out of my ATG, even my DH keeps running off with it. Quite a few of my dies have paid for themselves, partly because I bought almost all of them on rock bottom clearance or here at FSOT for practically nothing when everyone migrated to the electronic die cutting machines.
Oh, and not to mention all the stress reliving I got from making cards after my previous DH died 11 years ago. |

Yeah, I've gotten my "money's worth" out of nearly everything, except the cricut carts I just got for Christmas... But I will get it out of those eventually, too!
A better question for me is what have a NOT gotten my money's worth out of? Actually, one thing comes to mind- my circle cutter system. I've used it a handful of times, and I paid like $10 for it at tuesday morning. I don't really use it anymore because now I use my cricut if I'm going to cut a big circle.
I do a lot of crafting. And really, my budget just isn't that big so that I have a bunch of unused stuff lying around.
Also it may sound a little dorky, and it is... but when that thread rolled around the first time I went through my albums to take inventory to see if I was "getting my money's worth", and was kind of surprised at how much use my stuff really was getting. I found that I had used certain cricut cartridges on 100+ pages! Made me feel better about my purchases, anyway. |

Out of my paper trimmer, a thousand times over. Also my cutterbee scissors, corner rounder, cats eye ink pads, many stickers, lots of paper (because it was less than $1), and adhesive and stamps.
Im sure there is a lot more that I definitely feel I got my money's worth out of but there is a TON of supplies just waiting to be used. And this is after I have ruthlessly purged my supplies. So I will most likely never feel that it was all worth what I paid.
But its much cheaper than therapy (for me anyway) |

I am still using the CM photo trimmer I bought in 1998 and the Fiskars trimmer I bought in 2000. Those are the first things that came to mind that I have more than got my money's worth out of. But since I am the world's slowest scrapbooker and a big collector, I don't know if I will ever get my money's worth out of my Cricut and carts, unless they last me into the rest home.

But what is important to me ,is the joy and relaxation I get from scrapping. It is a stress reliever for me and I have made many gifts of scrap books so I have gotten my money's worth. Absolutely! Every dime. . . I can't COUNT the number of albums, cards, wedding favors, fish extender gifts, gift albums, decore items and you name it that i've cranked out over the last 15 years using my tools and supplies. I am now a much more frugal shopper and now i totally get my money and then some out of my purchases. my main thing that i bought was i upgraded to the silhouette cameo and i honestly use it on almost every project. other things- border punches- corner chomper all sooo important!!knowing what your style is really helps-- |

It depends. While it's SO not cheaper than therapy (I actually DO go to a therapist and she's $25 every month) my crafting really is good for my mental health. So, I'm getting value there.
As far as actual supplies, I think paper I get good value for. I use everything I buy right away. Newer paper usually gets used to the point where every scrap is gone. In the beginning I bought crap, so I hated working with it, but NOW I buy the good stuff and use the heck out of it. I think as far as a monetary value put to every use then my stamps are the biggest loser in there. And my Cricut.
But as far as my $1,200 investment on my Copics HECK YEAH I got my money's worth. Even having to use them that much, at a $1 return, I've definitely got my money's worth. They're the best thing I've ever purchased. |

Sadly I have some bad buys but I do try to think carefully before I buy so that things that enter my scrap room will feel loved when used.
Things that have carried on giving, corner rounder circle punch cuttlebug trimmers.
Not so much cricut a second hand purchase that seems unlikely to earn its large space, those rotary sewing things, bind it all, oh I don't think I will carry on!
