I shared this with Amy Tan, but wanted to share it with the Peas.

I have been trying to order the Amy Tan LOVE paper
on 2Peas for several months. Everytime it comes in, I put it in my cart, but when I get ready to hit the BUY button, the paper is already sold out. It's happened 3 different times at 2peas. Anyway, I decided to travel to a scrapbook store 2 towns over and try to get this specific paper. This is the conversation I had with the sweet lady trying to help me in the scrapbook store.

ME-- I'm looking for the Amy Tangerine LOVE paper. It's kraft with the word LOVE in white all over it.

Saleslady -- What? Who?

Me - Amy Tangerine, she has collections with American Crafts.

Saleslady -- Who? I have no idea what you're talking about.

Me -- WHAT? Amy Tangerine is the Julia Roberts of the scrapbooking world. How in the world could you not know who she is?

Saleslady -- Julia who?

Me -- You know, Pretty Woman?

Saleslady -- Are we still talking about scrapbooking here?

ME-- LOL -- shaking my head as I walk out of the store with no Amy Tan paper.

I've noticed that as LSS's come and go, the ones that go the fastest are those with employees who don't. have. a. clue.
Epic fail!
You probably won't go back, eh?

ROFL....

I've been in Archivers many times when a customer asks a question and the employee cannot answer. I always open my big mouth to answer.

Oh lawdy. I have similar story.

This time last year, I went to Archiver's to get the new Dear Lizzy. The sales lady had NO IDEA who she was. I'm like "Well, her line was released under American Crafts, so maybe you just know it as that" but she still had no idea what I was asking for when I said Neapolitan.

Later down the road, I go there for Amy's line. Same sales girl is working, she doesn't know who Amy is either.

I had a similar experience at my LSS a few months ago when I asked about Simple Stories. They CARRY Simple Stories and couldn't answer my question.

Reminds me of a few years ago my LSS moved stuff around. I was in a rush and asked where the basic grey was. She took me to the grey row of card stock

I can maybe see someone not knowing who Amy Tan is, she seems to have a big online following, if you aren't online you might miss it.

But, Julia Roberts?!? HOW?

When I was working at an LSS, I made it my business to know who everyone was, what products were hitting the market, and customer trends.

There's nothing more frustrating to walk into a store where employees don't have a clue about the industry they're in or worse, having no desire to learn about it. Just saying as someone who has been a manager.

It's sad when you walk into a scrapbooking mega store and you know more about the product they sell than they do.

I'm so surprised! No wonder all the LSS are going out of business if they aren't keeping up with the latest trends. I thought we only had this problem in the UK (with the brick and mortar stores, the online ones are good). Silly store owners! I hope you get that paper. I had one sheet and I'm cutting it up and eeking it out!

I don't want to own a scrapbook store, but I would like to be some ort of buyer or something. I've been to many scrapbook stores where I've had to explain the latest and greatest to. They should be up to date on that kind of stuff. Frustrating.

Can you say 'just an employee'!?

It is so frustrating when people work in a store knowing nothing about what they are selling.

I was in a Joanns one day at the cutting table, I said 1 1/2 yards please. This sweet young girl cut me a one yard piece and a one half yard piece. I tried to explain to her why this was not the same as 1 1/2 yards. She could not understand lol

I never have gotten that paper. There is an Archiver's in Raleigh, about 1.5 hours away. I may travel there to see if they have it.

I was stunned that she didn't know who Julia Roberts was either. She was a super nice little lady, no disrespect to her at all. She just shouldn't have been working in a scrapbook store.

I've been to so many crops where people simply don't care about brands or what's new. It doesn't surprise me. The average scrapper doesn't seem to care, 2Peas has a much different clientele. If I walked into my LSS (doesn't deserve the title) They wouldn't know who Amy Tan was, they wouldn't even know of more than half of the current manufacturers. Their "new" Halloween products this year were a couple of sheet from a MME line about two years old. They seem to be doing fairly well, even without knowing a whole lot about the industry.

Keep in mind, I'm not saying this is excusable, I personally like the latest and greatest and keep up on my manufacturers.

I think its good business for any industry that the employees be knowledgeable and know current trends. It would be unacceptable for my local bookstore to have no idea about books on the current best list.

I think we forget that. Until I started browsing and shopping online I had no idea who any of the designers or even the Companies were. If you shop and scrap in and from big box stores (I did) you just bought and used what you saw While I now know the names I don't pay a lot of attention, I just buy what I like

That certainly strikes me as odd. I've come to expect that at a big box store but not so much at an LSS. I'd expect them to know of the trends and at least the company names, if not designers.

Makes me wonder though, is it a sign that scrapbooking is more "online" now, to the point that if you're not on blogs, SB sites, or 2Peas, you're basically "out of the loop"?

(shakes head) Wow.

In a specialised industry like scrapbooking I'd expect staff of a LSS to at least have and interest in and scrap themselves. I love my LSS as the girls can chat to me about anything new even if we know it will only be released/available in South Africa a few months later. That said, they are both also on 2peas

Another scrapper here who had an employee at Archiver's not know who Amy Tan or her Ready, Set Go line.
After asking, she told me they didn't have it in.
So I browsed around a bit more and came across it myself.

When I showed her where it was in case another customer asked, she said "oh, that is American Crafts." But really, even if you don't know Amy T., I imagine you would know the collection by American Crafts, right?

I called my Archivers to see if they had the Amy Tangerine camera album. The girl had no clue what I was talking about, she told me that she talked to someone else and they didn't have any. I went later that day anyway and there were 3-4 on the shelf with all the other albums. Ugh
