I have been paying for an earthlink email address for awhile now and I'm ready to switch to a free account (it's a daunting task)...what do you recommend? Gmail, yahoo? I don't even know where to look for free accounts.

My DH has a gmail account and feels its not very user friendly. Also I want an account I can see all of my folders besides the IN BOX when I'm on my phone or iPad.

Gmail would have been my recommendation. You just need to get used to the interface. It's far better than something like Yahoo mail or hotmail.

I've always been able to see or use any of my folders on an iphone, ipod touch, or ipad.

Gmail all the way. Not sure why he thinks it isn't user friendly? I have never had one issue.

I use hotmail live and I can see and use all my folders on my iPhone. I've had it for years. DD prefers Gmail - it's all what you're used to I guess.

It's my earthlink account that is the problem with seeing only the in box on my devices, not any email in general. I will check out gmail for myself and see how I like it. I can look at my DH's account.

I have gmail for my email address but on my iPhone I use the Apple mail app to view mail -- I see all the filters and labels I set up in gmail but I don't see any of the ads. And it pulls in all the old email addys that are still floating out there -- old AOL, old Yahoo, etc. The best thing about Apple mail is that it interprets my mail and offers to turn any dates into calendar entries, any addresses hot link to maps, etc.

Gmail. I also use the google calendars that come with it. Gmail/Google syncs to about anything.

I can see all of my folders from my yahoo accounting my iPhone and iPad.

Having said that, I'm going to be adding a gmail account soon. Nothing against yahoo but I'm going to replace my other account.

I have two yahoo accounts and one gmail. Honestly I prefer the yahoo mail. The reason I have two yahoo's - one is for "junk" stuff and the other is my main account.

I've been slowly switching everything from my sbc/yahoo account to my Gmail account. Personally, I like Gmail much better than any other email provider.

Thanks Ya'll...I've been looking at my DH's gmail account - are "labels" the same as subfolders/folders?

I have yahoo, and love it. I can see all the folders in my iphone, ipad too. If I make a note in my iphone, it also puts it into a yahoo folder. I don't use the calendar feature, as I have all that running through Outlook from our work Exchange server, so I don't know how well it works in yahoo.

You can turn off the conversation setting in gmail that does that. Just go to settings---general----conversation view----select off and save changes.

I have yahoo and gmail. I prefer gmail. I had a hotmail junk account but I didn't like changes they made 4 or 5 years ago. I should maybe check back in!

Kind of - gmail people apparently put things in folders then forget which folder and waste time searching or really want a copy in 2 folders, so they came up with labels. Everything stays in yur inbox, but is tagged with a label (or several) - you can filter to show particular labels the way you would view a folders and add as many labels as you like. It takes a little getting used to though.

Yes...labels are like folders. It takes a little getting used to, but is awesome once you do. You can set up all sorts of filters, label things automatically, do searches, etc. I highly suggest using chrome as your search engine with g-mail.

You can move things out of your inbox into labeled folders...if you like your inbox uncluttered, like me.

gmail all the way. It's ridiculously user-friendly and the interface is simple. Also the spam filters are superior to any other platform. I can see everything from both iPad and iPhone too. Just play around with it a little. And there are a ton of sources online to help with anything you don't understand.

I'm no expert on email, but I use Yahoo. I was able to easily set up a new one when my old email started getting spammed to death and then hacked.

I generally use my work email, but I also have a hotmail account. DH needed a personal email, and I was going to set him up with gmail, but ended up with hotmail - I guess since I already knew how to use it, it seemed easier to me.

DH and I both vote Gmail! You cannot go wrong with google, minimal ads and NO spam!
DH is an IT man for a living and does web on the side. Gmail is his preferred choice, even over paid ones. His vote should extra count because he is an "expert"

PS: We LOVE using the other features google offers. Google Documents allow us to share and edit docs with each other in our browser (which is Google Chrome of course). This is especially handy with things like grocery lists, budgets, and other things. We also love the calendar features. We both have our own personal calendars that we share with each other so we can see when the other has plans. This is particularly helpful for DH as he tends to forget when we have a family function or something like that

Ok, I'm off my google soapbox now

Thanks everyone! I set up a gmail account and have been playing with it a bit. It's a small learning curve, like with anything new, so I think it will be fine. Now to just get everything transitioned so I can stop paying for an email account, ugh! Takes lots of time!!

I appreciate your help!

There's also outlook.com, which was introduced a few months ago by Microsoft (at least I think it was). I don't have any problems with it, and I got in close to the beginning so it was easy to get the perfect email address (ie firstinitial+lastname @outlook.com). Not like some of those convoluted gmail addresses cuz there's so many of them...
