I was reading a post earlier and it seems common to work in 12x12 for your digital layouts but having them printed 8x8. Do you loose anything doing this? I have just created and never had my layouts printed except here at home for little things I putt around with. Thanks

I was wondering the same thing. I don't know the answer, but I'll be waiting to read what the experts say. I created all of my December Daily pages as 12x12, and plan to print them at 8x8.

No, you don't lose anything. I almost always do this, create 12x12 and print 8x8. The only thing to watch out for is font size. I try not to use a font smaller than 12 point, as it gets too small to read when you reduce by 60%.

If you use a place like Shutterfly (I'm thinking a few other places that I have used as well) you may lose a little bit on the edges but you would if you scrapped 8x8 as well. There is just something about the process they use when they print that you lose up to about 1/4 in. of the edges. I've just learned to adapt and make sure I don't have anything important that I don't want to lose near the edges.

I have done this, and not lost anything in the process. I only print at PersnicketyPrints.com, and they don't cut the edges off like other places do.

I haven't printed LOs at Persnickity Prints but I have had trouble with getting cards printed there. They always seem to cut something off or not center them but I have that trouble at Shutterfly too. I don't know how to get decent cards printed. Frustrated with trying to find a place that won't cut things off.

I use Wendyzine's actions to convert from 12x12 and make sure I don't lose anything on the edges

I do 12x12 and have prints made at Persnickety- never had any problems- I upload the full sixe but choose 8x8 prints. The books are so much easier for the kids to hold and it's cheaper too!

I've made 8x8 prints from 12x12 layouts a couple of times. They usually turn out fine. I use big font sizes.

I apologize if this has already been discussed in earlier posts, but here's my take on this issue.

I create in 12 x 12 and usually print in 8 x 8.

Here's why: If you create the file larger, you can always print it smaller without losing quality. If I create in 8 x 8 but then decide later that I need or want to print that page 12 x 12, it will lose quality and be somewhat grainy or pixelated and I don't want that. Creating in the largest size I may want to print just gives me a lot of added flexibility to print at whatever size I desire.

I can make a large file small without losing anything, but if I make a small file larger, I will lose quality. As far as losing from the edge, if a printer cuts from the edge on 8 x 8 pages, chances are they do it on the 12 x 12 also. It has to do with their printing process, not the conversion (at least from what I have experienced).

I create in 12x12 and print 12x12 unless I'm doing a photo book, and then I reduce to 8x8. Shutterfly always cuts something off in my books, but they actually give you a warning, and I THINK they tell you what the bleed's going to be.

I print my 12x12s at Persnickety Prints. They are wonderful! They cut off MAYBE 1/16" from a side or two, but I rarely have anything right on the edge, so they come out practically perfect.

same as Melanie here. I scrap and save my layouts in 12x12" but I print them 8x8", it works perfectly and I like the 8x8" books better.
