One problem I've had with them both is that the USB cord easily comes out of the drives. So I can have it plugged into my MacBook, put my Laptop down for a second and if I'm not real careful picking it back up, the USB will fall out if the drive. Wondering if that could affect its performance?

I think a photography class should be a requirement in all educational programs because it makes you see the world rather than just look at it.

I always buy Seagate AND Western Digital. I have 2 of each and none of them have failed me yet.

They are both a brand I trust.

I agree that I don't think it's the brand. It's most likely heavy use OR a bad lot that would cause a drive to fail. This is my opinion, mostly from my experience with the drives I own.

I will add that I do NOT leave my externals on continuously. I turn them on (or plug them in if they have no power switch) only when I need files off of them, and promptly turn them off or unplug them. I feel this greatly increases the life span of the drives.

I also keep two copies of all my files backed up at all times. I buy my drives in pairs each time I need a new set. They are mirror images of each other. It's more expensive this way but I know I will not lose my files if one external does die.

I also do not buy two of the same drive when I need a new pair. I buy one Seagate and one Western Digital. This way if one manufacturer produces a bad batch, I have some protection. What are the chances of two drives, from two different manufacturers, coming from a bad batch?

I hope this helps.

HHCC always welcome & appreciated !!

I have 1tb seagate and 1tb Western digital both passport size external hard drives. I never leave them plugged all the time. I use them only to back up files. I bought the extra 1tb, to back up my back up drive.. Just in case..
