because I KNOW the Peas have them!

I get lip syncing when there is a lot of dancing involved, like at the Super Bowl and I know it's been done before with the National Anthem, but I do feel a little disappointed because while I was watching I thought it was live. Seems like Diva move for Beyonce.

I wondered if she was worried about the cold temperatures and the effect on her voice. It wasn't as cold as they had predicted, but cold dry air can really affect your voice - its hard to breathe properly for singing, and it can make your throat tight or make you cough. I think she knew she had a good recording and went the safe route by using it. Just my guess.

She's good at lip synching - I wouldn't have guessed it until they started covering it.

It was a lovely rendition anyway. Not too much ornamentation, but a little personality. And a great balance with the band. I give it two thumbs up.

I think she 100% should have sang it live, I feel like for that event it was cheating. What's the point, to get up there and look and sound perfect? Lame. I thought Kelly Clarkson did amazing and she was so much more authentic by singing live.

Lip syncing bums me out- you're a SINGER you get paid obscene amounts of money to sing, so please do not lip sync.

Who cares? She sang to her own song. It's not like she sang to another singers voice. It was freaking freezing and she was probably worried that she couldn't hit the notes in that environment. Then people would be bitching that her voice was awful. You never can please everyone.

I don't care. I would care if it was at a *concert* that I paid to attend, because I am there specifically and only for the music. I want that to be performed live or I might as well listen at home.

At an event like the inauguration, SuperBowl, etc., I just want it to sound good. I wouldn't want the inaugural ceremonies to be marred by audio problems, off notes, etc.. And if, for whatever reason, the performer felt that lipsyncing was going to give a better result that day, I'm fine with that. The performer does not have control over the circumstances, environment, sound system, etc. in those scenarios like they do at a concert of their own, so they may feel like they can't give their best performance - but are still honored by the invitation and want to participate. So they lipsync to their own song. I don't think it's a big deal. It's not like someone else is singing for them.

Such an important moment, and the echoes from the amps mess you up and crap the national anthem at the inauguration of the President of the United States?

Yeah, I totally get recording in advance.

The Marine Corps band used a Pre-recorded track. I don't judge them for doing it, so I can't really judge her. Makes Kelly Clarkson's performance more impressive, however.

face it, the national anthem is a very hard song to sing with a very wide range...much harder than whatever else was sung.

I don't blame her for wanting it to come out right..

I didn't like her rendition at all. If it was prerecorded she should have sounded a lot better than that.

The tabernacle choir was gorgeous and Kelly Clarkson was awesome.

Beyonce I wasn't really impressed by to begin with and now to find out she was lip synching?

It doesn't bother me.
I want it to sound good, and I want to watch a good show - if I get those two things at a concert then I'm happy.
I'm not a particular fan of "live" music, I'd rather have it sound like it does when I am at home.
If you can do that live, then that's great. If you can't, but otherwise give a great show and have canned singing instead...then that's OK too.

Same as if I see a good looking guy singing on TV, if I like the song then I buy it. Then I find out he wasn't singing, but some other ugly dude...don't care. Still like the song and still like looking at the other cute guy.

I want to know how people watching knew she was not live???

It doesn't bother me. I get why they pre-record their songs, and we all know she can sing. Not a big deal to me at all.

I was surprised to read Yo-Yo Ma didn't play live 4 years ago. His cello wouldn't cooperate in the cold. I remember how amazing I thought he was. I would've never guessed his piece was pre-recorded.

I really don't care and don't think it deserves national news coverage to the extent it has, BUT, I do think that if you are given the privelege of being the voice for such an event, you should honor it by actually singing and giving it all you have.

I really don't care. I thought it sounded great and was appropriate for the venue. I thought all the singers and speakers and musicians sounded great. Doesn't matter to me if they were live or not.

I read in the Boston paper that they were recorded because they didn't have any time to rehearse with Beyonce. They didn't know whether she was live or not.

I knew that Yo-Yo Ma was recorded at the last inauguration. String instruments' sound gets messed up in the cold. I'd be surprised if he even had his usual instrument out there like that even if he was fake playing -- couldn't the temp changes damage the wood? It was Freezing last time.

The Marine Corps Band issued a statement that they provided a prerecorded track for Beyonce, they were not live. Apparently, some people noticed that they were faking it while she was singing. Why is it a big deal if Beyonce provided a track for her own song? YoYo Ma "lip-synced" with his cello. Why can't Beyonce?

Susan.

With ear pieces, echoes from amps don't matter. You only hear what comes through your ear pieces (and you can wear two to be sure you hear what's right). As an amateur vocalist, it bothers me when 'professionals' lip sync. I've had to sing when my voice was questionable, but pull it off each time. Practice and warm up or don't agree to sing the anthem. I love singing our anthem. The ability to do it well shows talent. Any decent singer should be able to do it.

Yoyo Ma 'lip-synced' with his cello because when it gets that cold, the strings will snap. That's what I watched on a news report.

The Marine Corps band is the one that started the rumor that she lip-synced and they did as well, then they retracted about her part. I'm in the 'I don't care' camp.

I understand why she did it -- fear of screwing up.

I'm far less irritated about that than finding out that Manheim Steamroller is pretending to play their instruments for their concert tour for which they charge bucks for the tickets.

More of these popular singers lip sync more than you think.

Most of their "sound" is created in the sound booth, not in their vocal folds. Some of them have very bad singing voices, but if the sound engineer raises this, lowers that, eq's this...he can make a bad singer sound pretty cool. If the singer has the look and style, the sound engineer can make the sound.

I don't like lip syncing, so this annoys me. But honestly I haven't spent a lot of time stewing about it, because I realize that singers fake it when they're supposed to be live all the time anyway. That, and I'm not a fan of hers. So, whatever.

Did you feel the same about Yo Yo Ma recording his performance at the prior inauguration? I mean, I really thought he was playing that cello!

Sometimes weather condition or cold can make for a spotty performance or at least spotty sound when playing at such an enormous venue.

Really, I just can't get upset about it.

I don't feel the same about the string instruments. Extreme cold is bad for string instruments. I played violin through college and winter is hard on wood, glue, and strings. The wood expands and contracts with heat and cold, strings can break, and glued seams pull apart with changes in the wood.

To my knowledge, The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir did not lip sync The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Beyonce made a professional decision to present her rendition of the song in a pre-recorded format. Both ways met the requirements of the day and like art, both were up for interpretation.

Well, no, she didn't sing anything. Thus the conversation.

Personally, I think if you're going to play a recording, there's no point in showing up.

I would rather it was live. And if she messed up a bit or was a little pitchy I would have liked that too. Just like I like seeing pictures of movie stars grocery shopping and pumping gas. These are real people and I like things that are real. In the studio they use machines to fix her pitch, wipe out breath sounds etc. the great thing about live dinging is that you don't get all that hocus pocus.

I am a big fan of Mariah Carey and when she sings live guess what, sometimes her voice doesn't sound perfect and being a professional she has to compensate. She goes down an octave, let's her back up singers help her, changes her technique. I Love that.

Singing to a back up track is like looking at Beyonce's super photoshopped cover on the magazine and thinking she really looks like that. She doesn't. It's a lie and I think it hurts us as a society when we are led to believe in perfection that doesn't exist.

I think this is done more often because of the cold weather and the havoc it causes to the instruments.

All the other singers sang live, so I do think it is a diva move, but that was her decision and she will have to respond to the criticism. Or in this case, not respond at all.

Fake just like her "pregnancy".

There are a lot of good reasons why she might have lip synced. Didn't watch her, don't really care. I used to like her so so but now after that whole ordeal in the news how her and JayZ closed the wing of the hospital for the "birth" of their child, I am not so much of a fan.

Looks like he was caught mid cough.

If Kelly Clarkson can sing live, so can Beyonce. Sorry it was a diva move. Singers have sung live at events for years, why is it that now a days that we have this technology divas come up with lame excuses like it was cold or I couldn't practice with the band. Shoot what's to practice? You both know the same song, it's really not that deep unless you want to be a diva and have everything be perfect. What was up with Beyonce taking off her coat to sing? In that cold? and wearing a black evening gown? Can you imagine being Obama sitting right behind her and thinking "geez I don't hear anything, why is sound only coming out of the speaker over there". It is an honor to sing there and she screwed it up.

I read somewhere that the band pretended to play with her? Now that is ridiculous. Why not just have them sit still, were they even on TV? That right there tells me they are creating a fake scene because they knew something was wrong with them being seen just sitting around.

I used to play violin and don't have a problem with this. He did play, it just wasn't with a mic on.

The U.S. Marine Band confirmed in a statement that the musical accompaniment was pre-recorded, explaining that "there was no opportunity for Ms. Knowles-Carter to rehearse with the Marine Band before the Inauguration so it was determined that a live performance by the band was ill-advised for such a high-profile event."

Master Sgt. Kristin duBois earlier told news outlets that the band had been informed that Beyonce would be using a pre-recorded vocal track, but the Marine Band seemed to back off the suggestion that it was a straight lip-sync by Tuesday afternoon, saying in the statement that "regarding Ms. Knowles-Carter's vocal performance, no one in the Marine Band is in a position to assess whether it was live or pre-recorded."

A source very familiar with the situation tells CBS News that Beyonce performed the national anthem live, but she pre-recorded a track of the song to sing over. The source said this is a standard performing practice.

The source added that her microphone was on and her voice was audible and the pre-recorded track was for backup/safety purposes.

So maybe she DIDN'T lip sync after all....

I just think the US Marine Band is back peddling. Beyonce probably called Obama personally all flustered so he in turn told the US Marine Band to stand down to not embarrass her. All this talk and she doesn't issue a statement, she doesn't want to go on record lying.

Scalia is neither coughing nor is he scratching his nose. His left arm is crossed over his chest to hold up his right arm. Let's not defend Scalia when he is doing something he himself would decry as unpatriotic and disrespectful.

This thread would have a different title and be much longer if she had decided to do it live and had messed it up.

I gotta feel for the girl. It's an incredibly high pressure situation to be in.

On the other hand, even though I have MAD respect for Kelly Clarkson because I think she is wickedly talented and an extremely under-rated vocalist...I love her even more for tackling hers on such a cold day and knocking it out of the park!
