So much talk about an event that was not televised, right? Wasn't the luncheon supposed to off camera?

Anyway, John Boehner is known to be a heavy smoker and he's known to drink the hard stuff. So if he was coming back from a smoke and drink break after the swearing in, there's no way to make it nice -- he would have smelled. I'm amazed at how much smoker smell bothers me these days even 20 years ago everyone smoked -- at work, in dorms and hotels, everywhere.

So I am thinking that Michelle's reaction was not bad manners but an involuntary reaction to the smell of tobacco on the Speaker.

Like coat hangers they multiplied, under the bed I think until they were threatening to take over that precious space that we all covet and refuse to cede to other family members. Thus I became PunchPrincess. )

I don't think so. Doesn't Obama still smoke?

that could be true about Boener.

President Obama has quit smoking, and still uses the gum once in a while.

I responded, but I think these things take me away from the important issues of the day, and the wonderful and positive Inauguration events that we just experienced as a nation.

It didn't look like an eye roll to me. It looked like she just glanced up in front of her.
But I must be wrong because the whole internet says otherwise.

It definitely looked like an eye roll...she shook her head and then rolled her eyes...I had to see for myself, since sometimes the media likes to make a mountain out of a molehill, but there was no mistaking that eye roll.

I have to tell you, I genuinely do not care why she eye rolled or that she eye rolled at all.

To me, it is extremely clear in the video that she is NOT rolling her eyes at the SOH.

The president leans over, whispers something in her ear, she looks at *him*, shakes her he's slightly and rolls her eyes.

I think it's kind of ridiculous that people are trying to make it out as her being rude.

As one who rolls my eyes at politicians of both parties on a fairly regular basis, I am having a hard time understanding why the frack this is news.
Roll away, Michelle.

Last night on one of the trash tv shows (Inside Edition or one of those) they hired a deaf lip reading expert. He claims Boehner was making a joke saying "someone won't let you" alluding to Michelle not letting the President smoke.

Maybe John tells bad jokes. Maybe he farted.

Maybe he told such a heartfelt story, that Michelle was looking up, trying not to cry. (that's what your supposed to do, to try and avoid tears.... look up, it sort of works. )

Really, I think it's absurd how much time this stupid media has put on this lame story. I want to scream, "WHO THE&*%@ cares!" ....

I swear, we, as a nation... are going to over analize ourselves to death.

President Obama has quit smoking, and still uses the gum once in a while.

Maybe that explains why he was chewing the whole time during the parade. I guess I'll give him a pass if that was the case, but I normally cringe at gum chewers smacking away in church, formal events, weddings, etc., and thought it not in good taste for him then being in the limelight. I dared not comment earlier, though, at risk of being told off and to leave the poor man alone.

Who among us wouldn't do at least one eye roll if we had to sit through a business luncheon while seated between our husband and a business associate, especially if the associate was a competitor? I am sure there was a whole lot of eye rolling going on in that room.

I would have been the one more likely looking at my watch every 30 seconds and rolling my eyes wishing everyone would just quiet down so we can get this over so we can get on with the festivities.

Ditto! Obviously one of them said something stupidly funny (you can tell by their own reactions) and she did what I'd do if my dh or his colleague said something stupid: roll the hell out of my eyes.

It totally cracks me up.

He has not kicked the habit. My friends inside the Beltway say, laughingly, "you don't WANT this President not smoking". He's a bit high-strung, to say the least.

That was my thought as well, especially if it's true that Boehner joked the president wasn't out smoking because Michelle wouldn't let him. Dumb statement, worthy of an eye roll in my book.

I'm a champion eyeroller without any ability at all to control said eyeroll. I don't know if she rolled her eyes or not, but I can sympathize if she just couldn't control herself.

Heck, these days I'm spending a lot of time crawling under the table looking for my eyes because they've popped right out of my head and rolled clear across the floor.

I think the whole thing is silly, but it is kinda funny to see Michelle doing something akward looking instead of how perfect she usually looks.

So I am thinking that Michelle's reaction was not bad manners but an involuntary reaction to the smell of tobacco on the Speaker.

I don't think rolling your eyes is an involuntary reaction to anything. Whether or not it was to the smell of tobacco on the speaker or not - it was still rude - and funny. I think if you watch other parts of the video of the lunch you can see that Michelle and SOH are very uncomfortable with each other. Which is too bad, they should be able to put their dislike of each other aside and be cordial. I expect the same of the congress members and I would expect the same of my employees.

I think he said something. Don't buy the smoking angle. The reason I say that is because I can't stand the smell of smoke, hate being stuck in an elevator with a smoker, etc. That said there's no way I would ever marry a smoker! He would quit before we got married because I can not stand the smell, think it's a nasty habit, and don't want to marry someone who is hurting their health like that. If he can't quit, it would be a deal breaker for me, honestly.

I think the fact that she allowed him to smoke for so many years means she just saw it as a (small) bad habit like a few extra lbs, like sure it would be nice if it was gone but she could live with it. She also would downplayed whether or not he was still smoking when asked early in his Presidency, as if she was helping him cover it up.

I agree w/ Peabay that It looks like Boener & Obama were joking around and she rolled her eyes at their juvenile behavior.

I like it when the camera captures moments like this. It reminds me our leaders are human too.

Some of the video angles are better than others. It looks like Mr. Boehner and President Obama are joking about something. The President is leaned behind her laughing, and when Boehner taps her, she rolls her eyes. If Boehner and Obama can laugh and joke with each other, then I am guessing she is rolling her eyes the same way I roll mine at my husband and his friends when they say something stupid.

Sorry didn't see that part. But maybe she was rolling at his liquor smell.

I saw an interview with President Obama a while back and he said he had promised one of his girls he would quit smoking. They even stated on the tv that his gum chewing was probably due to his trying to quit smoking.

And from someone who quit many years ago I say Kudos...chew away... and Michelle can just roll away too.
