Last year DH's parents retired and sold their house, giving us $10,000. I asked the same question here. We ended up putting the full amount on our mortgage. We're doing the same thing this year when my parents sell their house.
Is there some law that states your parents have to give you 10k when they sell their house? If so, I've been ripped off.
I would take a trip back to Italy and this time, take my dh.

Today, every bit of it would go towards paying off CC debt.
Nine years ago, we did suddenly inherit $10,000. At that time, it went to pay for braces for 2 kids, 2 new computers, and a family vacation.

I would remodel our master bathroom.
It's built pretty stupidly. It's large, but the space is wasted. I'd shorten the long 2 sink vanity into a smaller 2 sink vanity for starters. That would mean I'd have to re-plumb the second sink and drill in the concrete to move the drain. Then I'd move the bathtub over, which again, would mean re-plumbing it and drilling in the concrete to move the drain.
At that point we'd move the wall in, allowing the tiny closet with room for one to become a true "his and hers" closet.
I'd also have to completely re-do the shower.
And since I'd be moving the vanity and the tub, I'd have to rip out all the flooring and replace it.
That would pretty much eat up all of the $10,000.

we did inherit $10,000--it paid for our Hong Kong income taxes..we were living there and had to pay income taxes before the end of the tax year...and they do no withholding there.

Most likely put it in my retirement account. Second choice would be either to put it towards the mortgage or college fund. A few minor home improvements would be very tempting though..

It would go towards our Africa trip. Sadly, that would only cover about 40% of the trip.
It is extremely expensive. But well worth the trip if you understand that warlords are the local police customs etc and bribes are their salary.
I would leave the country again for Africa if I could take DD as well.

|Posted: 1/23/2013 9:55:41 PM|That actually happened to me. I was awarded a settlement from my employer due to an accident. We used a portion on a vacation and then saved the rest to help pay for my daughter's wedding. We had the money in an account for about 10 years. It was so nice to be able to give her that money for her to do something wonderful with it. I still suffer effects from the accident but it helps knowing that I made lemonade from lemons

I would put every last penny into savings. We plan to retire in three years and we are trying to sock some $$ away. Of course, if I didn't need to save it, I'd use it for a down payment on a new car (probably our last).

Put it into savings, at least until my current unpaid maternity leave is over in August.
Otherwise- replace the carpet in pretty much the entire house. Save for replacement cars. WOuld love to save for a vacation, but that's pretty far off.

The responsible answer would be to pay bills, but I would use it on a trip to Europe. I went for a few weeks on a school type trip and hit the highlights.
I would love to go back and take my family and spend some time at the places I really fell in love with and do the things I wasn't able to with my school group.

1. Pay the taxes on it.
2. Trade the remainder and turn it into $100,000.
3. Pay the taxes on that income.
4. Trade the remainder and turn it into $1,000,000.
