My late brother hit the Irish Sweepstakes back in 1970 for $120,000.00
seemed like a fortune then and it was before the real estate market took off too so he paid cash $29,900 for his very nice ranch home with built in pool and he and his wife went to Hawaii. The bought some land in Lake Havasu for retirement and put some in trust for both of their young boys. Unfortunately, both he and my SIL passed away in their 50's.. 2 years before he was to retire,, she 3 years later..

but he and she LOVED their little house and it was their pride and joy.

Not me (I wish) but one of my friends family won $29 million in the state lottery.

And it destroyed their family. There was some dysfunction to begin with but it magnified every bit of dysfunction by . . . well, 29 million times.

You always hear of that happening, but witnessing it first hand was interesting (and sad)

Nope. The only thing I've ever won was a $10 gift certificate to a bait and tackle store, which DH promptly took from me and gave to his father. I don't think it was in my possession for more than 15 seconds. Of course, I don't buy lottery tickets, so it would be tough for me to win the lottery.

My dad won a small amount my older siblings spent it before the ticket was even cashed he was going to buy a Porsche with the money.

Instead he told them all the money was a loan he expected the money repaid and once it was repaid he went on a cruise.

Never tell anyone before it's cashed.

No. But I've only played twice in my life, both times when the jackpot was an incredibly high, near-record number.

Nothing big. When I was a kid I won 2 bikes, 2 years in a row at a festival. I was the lucky one.

I won $500-600 the first time I went to the casino and was playing video poker. I cashed out and haven't gone again. LOL. My husband used to win frequently $1500-$2500 on a regular basis. I called him the luckest unlucky mofo I ever met. LOL. In one hand, out the other to pay bills off. He'd literally take in $40 to the casino and walk out with $2k. We rarely gamble anymore.

Oh, and that's how I got into photography. He scratched off a ticket on a day he was looking for a gift for me. Won $500 and spent it all on a camera for me.

In the early 90s I won a board game at a roller skating party. I've never bought a lottery ticket.

I won $50 on a scratch ticket last weekend. I was excited...$50 on a $2 ticket is pretty good! The most I have won was $200.00 gc to the mall at a holiday party.

Nope. I never win anything.

My neighbor won $1 million on a scratch ticket -- they took the cash upfront and bought a house.

Another friend won $100,000 on a scratch ticket and put it all away for his kids' college educations. He's a financial planner -- smart guy.

I won the lottery once - the cheque for $10.45 is now scrapped in my All About Me album. I kept it becaue I knew it would be the only lottery cheque I'd ever get. lol.

Last year I went to a scrap day and came home with over $200 worth of freebies. We all got a pack from the company for coming, and I won the lucky door prize plus the mystery hostess, so got to spend all that credit. I couldn't believe my luck - neither could the other ladies!

I won 100.00 on a 1.00 scratch ticket, 5k on a quarter machine at an Indian Casino in San Diego, and 1700.00 on winning hand of Let it Ride in Vegas.

I am not a big gambler at all, we go maybe 1-2 times a year to the local casino to meet friends for dinner and take about 40.00 to "play" with. I just got really lucky. LOL!

With the 5K I paid off my dh's truck and with the 1700.00 we bought living room furniture and this was all like 15 years ago, and we still have the truck and the furniture. I think I need to go to the casino!

I won a set of books from Tiger Beat when I was in middle school. Does that count?

I also won passes to the amusement park and a river rafting trip at the night club. The local radio station I liked would broadcast live there on the weekends and when I won I got to give a "shout out". Something like my name and "Woooo-OOOO!" Very typical twenty-something girl thing to say on the radio. Lol!

My friends and I won $25,000 in a scavenger hunt in Atlanta sponsored by a local radio station, Z93, back in the late 80s. It paid for the down payment on my house.

My friend and I were on the morning show and my name was in the papers for the contest.

Do you ordinarily give gifts with the expectation the recepient share it with you? The lottery ticket was given as a gift, so I don't think she needed to share her winnings with the giver.

How is this the right thing to do? She spent all of $1 on a ticket. I don't share other presents, so I don't see how this would be any different.

My husband went through a lucky streak when I first met him. He won a trip to Mexico, and different door prizes. His aunt won $6.7 million in the lottery. She never changed. She stayed on her farm, and kept volunteering at the Legion. She passed away just before Christmas and I'm sure she never spent a cent of her prize.

WinoGirl, you must share your radio station technique!

sure, I'll share Pennyring

The first trip to NY, I was unemployed at the time and listening to the radio late at night on a weekday, so I had a better chance of getting through to the station.

For Germany and WDW, I was at work and had access to a multi-line trunk phone, so I would dial on one line, put it on hold, dial another, etc. I had four trunk lines in action at the same time.
As soon as I rechecked one line and heard a busy signal, I would immediately disconnect and redial, put back on hold, then check the next one I had on hold. Some fast finger work won me those prizes

I won about $100 when I was in college in the state lottery. I hit 5 of the 6 numbers, and nowdays, that would pay several thousand. But it was a HUGE lottery that week because the pot had kept growing, so there were lots of people that hit 5 numbers, so our payout was really small each. The following week, the lottery rules changed so that there would be a minimum (maybe $2500) payout for 5 numbers. Bummer that I missed it by one week!

An aunt and uncle of mine won the Oregon state lottery (at least that is where she lives-maybe it was the Washington state lottery since it is just over the river to buy a ticket??) two times in a 3 year period in the 1990's.

They had 5 of the 6 winning numbers plus the bonus number both times. Their winnings were several million from what I've heard. They were able to retire to Hawaii and they live there 6 months a year and then travel around the US visiting every baseball statium in the country (major league baseball) during their 6 months on the mainland.

Wonderful luck, but my aunt is a wonderful person so I'm very happy for her.

The nicest/biggest thing we ever won was an extra day for our honeymoon. It was one of those Sandals places and they drew our name (out of 50 couples or so) at an informational meeting. So we went for 7 nights instead of 6 which was pretty cool.
