Tonight while putting some project life together I thought it would be fun to have a typewriter to type up little labels or journalling cards. I would also use it for journalling for my regular scrapbooking... for those of you who use one, what should I be looking for and what should I stay away from? I will likely have to purchase online because I don't think I will find one around here.

I've often wished I had my Dad's old manual typewriter so I would end up with a vintage look. I'm not sure if anyone sells the old ribbons though, and it would probably cost too much to buy the darn thing--an antique!

I can barely type on a manual typewriter--Thank goodness for computers! I will stick with some smootched courier font if I need to make a fake typewriter item!
I am excited to hear how it goes for you. Hopefully you can find something reasonable and don't have problems with ribbons.
Maybe you can put an ad in your local Craig's list (or whatever you have there) and someone will dig it out of their garage and give it to you. Or maybe a thrift store will have one. |

easier solution is to go to creative keepsakes, maybe two peas has font downloads as well and you can down load an old typewriter font. and use that I have one and it works great that way u dont have to worry about storing an old typewriter. finding ribbons for it etc. Stampin up has made font cds as well and I have one that has a very vintage font on it that I use alot. just another way to achieve that look with less hassle.

The font idea is brilliant!
My daughter has two typewriters. The problem with getting an old typewriter is finding the typewriter ribbon.
They don't make them anymore and most of the ones that you find are dried out.
Good luck! |

I have 2 typewriters. One is a modern one (from the 80s) and it is much easier to use. It doesn't have individual arms for each letter, and it has the ability to remember your tabs and spacing etc. The downside is that the font is very perfect, and almost looks like a computer print out. You don't get the little dents in the paper from the letter hitting the paper, either.
My second typewriter is more vintage but still plugs in. I got it on Kijiji (like Craigslist but my city doesn't have a big craigslist, everyone sells on kijiji instead) for only $20! The letters are not perfect and have that antique typewriter look, with indents in the paper from where the letter arm smacks the paper. It is really difficult to line up your text, but you get the hang of it with practice.
I got replacement ribbons for both of mine at Staples, just by guestimating which ones would fit. There only seem to be a few styles of ribbon out there so it's not that hard to get the refills (although that might not be the case for the old fully manual ones). |

I have a beautiful typewriter like Audrey Hepburn had in Breakfast at Tiffany's. It is even in the gorgeous Tiffany Blue. I paid under $2.00 for it at my thrift store. It is in perfect condition. I treasure that typewriter. |
