I remember it well. It was 2002, I had been scrapbooking for a year. I needed a hobby and since I liked to take pictures and I loved paper, scrapbooking had become my hobby. But, I didn't know that it was a big thing, so I did my own thing, but did some internet surfing and found a magazine. So I decided to find a store, then I found out this store I had passed for a number of years was in fact...I'm not sure what I thought it was. The first time I went in, I was like OMG. I didn't get to stay long we stopped there on our way to take our neice to a volleyball game. But I went back that weekend and soon made my first scrapbook page that looked like the ones in the magazine. That store is closed now, as are the other four that were local. | |

I do! It was 2002. I had done a LOT of eye rolling for months while my very good friend told me how she had started this new hobby and was considering opening a store of her own. (She had previously been a VP at a major hi tech company and I thought she'd lost her mind!)
She dragged me to the LSS she was working and playing in. I was not impressed. It was a smallish store in a strip mall. The aisles were narrow and there were a lot of pastel papers with baby themes. She made me make a page---silly thing with palm trees, using markers and some pp.
THEN SHE OPENED her store. In a *huge* space. We spent weeks setting up that store & putting out her inventory. By the time SCRAPBOOK TERRITORY opened (almost ten years ago now!) I was so addicted to pretty paper and embellishments I could hardly stay away from the place.
I *hate* living so far away now. Though, I think it's better for my family's finances that I do.  | |

Oh yes...it was in 2004 and I was a new grandmother. I went to a CM party but that style just did not appeal to me but....I located a LSS about 3 minutes from my house! Love at first sight! Papers, stickers, brads...oh my! It was small but so close....
Then I found another one about 20 minutes from home...and they held classes and crops!
Unfortunately both of them were destroyed in Hurricane Katrina and did not reopen. So sad.... | |

My memory is not of a store, but of going with my sister, who was already an avid scrapper, to the Scrapbook Expo. She invited me to go and I figured maybe I would start an album for my honeymoon so I wanted to check out what sort of stuff they had there.
That was in February of 2005, and I have been hooked ever since!
I remember how excited I was that day and for weeks after! Just thinking about that day makes me remember how awesome that feeling was. Thanks for bringing this up. | |

Oh, yes! I went with my friend, Jen. I didn't even know that scrap stores existed. I was amazed at the different products and my word, the magazines!! My son was three years old at the time. He quietly stood next to me as I shopped. The owner couldn't believe how well behaved he was and gave him some stickers. | |

It was an event!!
I started scrapbooking in Italy. I had to wait a year after I started scrapbooking to come to the states. I had to wait to settle to a town that had absolutely nothing and the closest city was 3 hours. So almost 6 months after living in the states and 1 no successful expedition we finally found Scrapbook from the Heart in San Antonio. It was tiny but packed! It was so overwhelming that I think I left with empty hands that day...

'Love reading these stories... isn't it funny how so many of us heard harps and angels when we set foot in our first store?
My first store was called Busy Bee Scrapbooking, 'must have been around 1999. It was small and had an entire wall of Suzy's Zoo and Mrs. Grossman stickers and I was in heaven! Unfortunately they closed shortly after I discovered them.
I've been to a lot of wonderful stores since then but NOTHING compares to that butterfly-in-the-stomach feeling of that first visit to Busy Bee! | |

Yes, it was 2001. I'd been scrapbooking for years and never realized it was an actual hobby with real stuff you could buy specifically for your pages. A friend had become a Creative Memories consultant. After her first party, I found this store close to a business I was consulting with and was soon hooked. I just walked around in awe the first time I went in there. | |

Yes, of course. It was 2003 or 2004. I had bought one of those Wal-Mart everything is included kits. And had only seen scrapbooking a couple months before and I ran up the street to see my mom at lunch and when I left I walked past a storefront and was immediatly drawn in. I bought some glassine bags, yellow coudaroy fabric brads, 5-7 sheets of paper some random stickers off of a roll, and a pack of stickers that were of 2 peas in a pod. (I know all this because those are the only 2 pages i kept from that kit). I gabe up shortly after that. I picked it up 6 years later and I have been hooked ever since. | |

It was a tiny little store in our town and it only had Mrs. Grossman's stickers and Frances Meyer paper in the beginning, which was around 1995.
The second store was called Teacups & Treasures in Valencia, CA. They also manufactured Family Treasures punches. I would make the hour trip at least once a month. It was a fabulous store. I still miss it. | |

I was so thrilled I had more options than CM. When I went home with my new stuff my CM consultant told me I shouldh't use anything but CM because it was the only products that were 'safe'. I laughed and that was the beginning of the end of my CM days.
I had almost the exact same thing happen to me! And it was the last time I saw a CM consultant's booth anywhere, too.
To be fair, she had done a lovely job on her scrapbook that she had with her to show.
But gees, the whole scrapbooking world was opening the doors to Heaven and she expected people to stand outside the gates and pretend it wasn't even there!

GREAT THREAD!!!! I totally remember and I wish I had a picture of that little store. It was called The Scrap Yard and I walked in, in Fall of 2001 and was in love! I remember the smell and I had never smelled that smell before! I still love that paper/stickers/glue smell!
Funny thing is...that patient store owner helped me pick out the perfect bunny stickers for one of my first pages about Easter. I was so particular, she helped me scour through the store for the perfect pieces. I couldn't believe I could use stickers as a grown up. I've always loved stickers. Still do! | |

In 2000 I found a magazine called Scrapbooking Memories in our local newsagent. It was their first edition and I was so excited to find a store advertised that was less than 5 minutes from my home. Went there the very next day, walked in and spent ages looking at all the rolls of Mrs Grossman's stickers and shelves and shelves of pretty paper.
I signed up for a beginner's class and bought $7 worth of stuff. I so wish I had kept that receipt!!
I spent the next few years cropping every Fridy night, making new friends, going on a camp each year and spending so much money I quickly became a VIP customer.
Memory Lane has now closed down but Scrapbooking memories is still the main Australian magazine going.

I was a CM consultant years ago. I used to go to seminars where they very seriously would tell us of all their extensive lab testing and how only they put the money and research in to ensure archival quality.
Of course, this was before just about everyone started tossing around the term archival quality. It's possible it was true at the time.
So in your CM consultant's defense, she probably was only saying what she believed and was trying to help.  I wish I could go back and un-say some things that I said to customers out of the best intentions.  | |

If it is the same place I shopped there once when my sister still lived in Lee's Summit. Then came a call from her who told me they were going out of business. Well she isn't a scrapper at all but went in and bought a TON of stuff to sell on ebay (after giving me a bunch of stuff). We thought heck ya and make a little extra money doing this. I don't think she ever sold much of it and ended up either to me or her kids. I still have about 20 off the roll sheets of some County Fair stickers.. | |

WorkingClassDog, are you in Colorado Springs? I can't remember the name of the first scrapbooking store I went into but All My Memories MIGHT be the name. It was in a strip mall close to where Montgomery Wards was.
My late DH and I walked into it to start getting ideas of how we were going to do our scrapbooking. Was disappointing because not much in it. Finally realized they weren't fully stocked yet! But we did decide we were going to do 12x12 post albums.
My favorite scrapbooking stores were the stamp store that added tons of scrapbooking in the Old Colorado City section, Creative Impressions and the store on Academy close to, I think, Austin Bluffs, were my two favorite stops. Especially Creative Impressions, I guess it was appropriate for ME that they closed the store and went only online 3 months after I moved back to Ruidoso!
I'm now 80 miles from what I think is the best scrapping store in New Mexico, Imagine That. I don't get to Roswell much but at least I have a good store that doesn't take all day to get there! I just hope they stay there since so many are closing. | |

It was 1999 and I discovered while visiting my dentist that there was a store in the basement area in the business complex called My Scrapbook Store. I was nervous at first because it was an odd location but when I opened the door and saw what they had I knew I found home. I started with CM in 1996 but I wanted more and MSS certainly had what I wanted! It was a sad day when they closed their doors. There were four LSS in my area and MSS was the furthest but the drive out there was worth it. Recollections and Memories closed a year or so after MSS and one store remains today.
I think the owner of MSS worked for EK Success and helped create SDU (Scrapbook Design University). I'm not sure if her working for EK caused her to close the store or not or mabye I have the facts all wrong. Anyway, I still miss the store. | |

No I am in Denver.. but I THINK they did have a store in Colo Spgs.. I never went to any scrapbook stores in the Springs until last year. There are two GREAT stores plus an Archivers... one is an outlet which is super cheap and a regular store that rivals Archivers... | |

I remember; I think it was 2000, and I saw a commercial on TV for a scrapbook superstore, but I didn't know where it was located. No web pages and internet searches and all that like we do now.
I got out our big ole Ma Bell phone book and looked up scrapbooks and there it was - a scrapbook store! I went there the next day and I was so happy. They had hardly anything compared to what they later became, but I went nuts buying stickers and magazines and paper.
I signed up for a crop; they were full for two months! I had to wait until July, and it was $20 prepaid. I happily paid. That was basically my first crop too I think.

While pregnant with my oldest dd in 1994, I was introduced to CM. Thought it was the bomb! I saw it as a perfect creative outlet for me.
After my dd was born, my CM consultant was trying to recruit me (very subtly) by hiring me to do "administrative" work for her. Once when I was working at her housoe, she was having a meeting with her downline and they were all talking about "contraban"! Among other things, they mentioned a store in Mesa, AZ - Memory Lane - and how so many of their customers were finding out about it.
Well, within days I made my way to Mesa. I truly thought I was at scrapbooking Disneyland. It changed my way of scrapping, and now papercrafting, FOREVER. I never scrapped the CM way since. I used their albums for my dds, prior to starting school. But that's it.
I remember those days - so long ago. Wow - nearly 20 years ago! Only 8 1/2 x 11 paper was available, really. No one made 12 x 12 at the time. But all the beautiful things they had to offer. Still miss that cute little house in Mesa! | |

I had already purchased the first few issues of CK magazines in a craft store. One day I saw a store sign that said Paper Cottage. I just had to check it out as I wondered if it could possibly be a scrapbook store and IT WAS! I was SO excited and overwhelmed to see all the amazing products. | |

Wow! Yes! I "scrapbooked" since high school. I picked up an old style white page scrapbook with a teddy bear on it from a shelf in Goodwill. I glued all my pictures in it, had my friends autograph it and used colored pencils to journal. It is full of Lisa Frank stickers! I continued on in this manner after college not even knowing there was such a thing as colored or patterned paper. I bought three ring binders and filled the page protectors with white and black cardstock and even got fancy with gold and silver pens. Then, I married and moved to Natchitoches, LA and I was walking down the street during a Christmas festival and walked in a paper crafts store....WOW!!! I think that was 2003/2004. I remember looking at the layouts and cards the LSS owner made and thinking: who has time for that??? I didn't know what to do with half of it, but I ended up buying colored papers, stickers and die cuts.

I used to live in Naperville, that is a nice Archivers store.
My first store was Cord Camera in Hilliard, Oh - I can't even imagine how much money I spent there. Funny that after we moved they closed that location, ha ha. | |

I think about this from time to time.... it was like falling in love for the first time!! The first scrapbook dedicated store I visited was in 1999- Stampeddler Plus in Northville Michigan.
We drove for a couple of hours to get there, and it was awesome!! I was like a kid in a candy store. Loved the die cuts, stickers, busy patterned papers. It was nice to see something different than Creative Memories, although I loved them too!
It's still in business, thankfully, and it's a beautiful store.
I also remember browsing a catalog or two from Pebbles in My Pocket. I have no idea how I got my hands on it, but it was worn out by my friends and I as we made our wish lists!! FUN TIMES!! Great thread,thanks! | |

Mine was 2004 at a place called Scrapbook Inn in Hamilton NZ. I was in love! Nine years later I'm back living there and it's closed down  I remember rows and rows of cardstock, lots of sticker rolls and Karen Foster paper.

Quite well. I don't remember the name of the store but it was on Germantown Ave. In Memphis, TN. Just so happened to drive by and see a big SCRAPBOOKS sign, can't believe that was over a decade ago! And I still have at least one piece of paper from that trip, don't want to part with it. It's funny that 12x12 wasn't easy to find then so everything I got was for 8.5x11. | |

You Peas are so lucky to have such lovely memories. I don't remember the first time I set foot into an LSS, so I guess it didn't grab my attention even though I was already scrapping in one form or another. This would've been late 90s/early 00s, i.e. well over a decade ago.

I hooked up with a friend who got me started. We still share the interest, but I don't do much anymore re: classes or scrapping.
I have a scrap room but it's full of things and I don't go down there. Sad, huh?
Anyway, my friend introduced me to the Expos..and I just loved them! There were a couple of LSS's that I went to ..mostly to stock up on Jolee's.
I didn't like CM, but tried it, and cropped with some friends.
Then, Scrapbook Territory got on my radar!! I probably started going there a year after they opened, and I was quite the loyal customer/class student. I liked coming in and spending time with a current project, and getting to know the staff. I still go there to shop mostly for Tim Holtz things, but I am cutting back on things. I know that there are things/papers that I just love to have..but I am more restrained.
So, it's been over 10 years..but I am not great about dates!!
Now that I have a darling grandson, I love to take photos.!!
I enjoyed reading everyone's posts.
I remember going to that huge scrapbook store in Severville TN, and liking the fact that they had local embellishments. Also, I went to Recollections in Dallas..also a really fun time.
there was a nice store in Campbell, CA that I went to about once a year. They had things that were unique.
Also, I was always on a quest for Judaica papers, stamps, and embellishments. I have a lot, and purchase them online now.

Yes, i don't remember the year early 2000s I'd say. But there were lots of 8.5x11 paper, mrs gross man stickers, and shelves of die cuts that you can buy. Oh and lots of stickers. | |

Oh yes! I didn't buy anything because there was too much to choose from! Too bad they were cliquey and didn't make me feel welcome the next time I went ... I think that's the main reason why they closed. | |

I was at a moms night out and it was held at a scrapbooking store named " Scrapbook Memories" in Crystal Lake, IL it was huge and loaded with stuff. I had called and they told me all I needed were my pictures they could sell me everything else. I got there and soon realized I was out of my element and had better investigate before dropping down my money. I ate the dinner I purchased and walked around the tables looking at everyone's work and I left. I remember my mom saying, "You're home early" and I told her what had happened. I went to the library later that week and researched scrapbooking and the rest is history. That was 10 yrs ago. I still love it, but I caution newbies to go slow. You can spend a fortune on the wrong stuff. Learn you style first. | |

I was a Stamper long before I was a Scrapper (as we do it now, anyway. More of a Smasher in H.S.)
Anyway I was visiting in Spokane (Spokane Peas help me out here, because I don't remember the name) shopping upstairs (in a mall, maybe?) and came across a large collection of folding tables tucked in a nook with LOTS and LOTS of paper. Most of it was 8 1/2x11, and more like the stuff you would type a newsletter on and I remember thinking how CRAZY that was that anyone would be able to sell enough paper BY THE SHEET to keep a store open, no matter how humble it was.
Sometime after the twins were born in '92, a friend in the midwest sent me some CM stuff/info in the mail and said she was into it and it started a creative tickle in some back corner of my brain.
The first actual store store I visited was Amy's Attic in Olympia, but I was there strictly as a stamper I SWEAR
I loved Scrappin Peeps as well. And they had their own line of stamps & "peeps"... | |

My first LSS experience was Sweet Memories in Carrollton, GA. It instantly became my happiest place on Earth Erin always had the most up to date, hot off the presses scrappin' goodies. She and her mom were fantastic people. I sure do miss them now they have closed shop. | |

Oh yes...it captured the same feelings as my fond memories of home ec classes...which caused me to major in home ec in college. It was the famous Memory Lane...my husband had shamed me into scrapbooking a trip to Morroco...I remember saying that I thought it might get expensive and he naively said...well, the trip was expensive so so what...little did he know we could take several trips to Morroco on what I've spent in twelve years.
I went back the next day and signed up for my first class...how to scrap a vacation...taught by Heidi Swapp before she became famous. She actually was pretty awful the first two hours as she'd just had her third child and her husband called in the middle of class. I thought she was cute but rather boring as she rambled...I sat there fascinated with her toe ring. Well, at 8:30 pm she suddenly turned it on and in that last hour of class I've never learned so much about scrapbooking since...I was hooked and have loved the hobby ever since.
A year later I took another class from her at Memory Lane and women had flown in from the east coast to take a class from her and get her to pose for photos with them...that was my first inkling that she was a big deal. | |
