I decided lastnight that I want to get in shape and start eating healthier. Today is day 1 without sodas. Water is REALLY boring. Do you put anything in your water to make it more appealing ? What do you drink besides water?
Thanks in advance!
ETA: Did you see any results with quitting sodas? How soon ?

I make a pitcher every night with mint leaves, sliced cucumber and lemon slices. It needs to steep overnight to get the full flavor of everything.
My skin has improved by leaps and bounds since I gave up soda. My wallet has gotten fatter too.

It's been over 6 years (?) since I've had soda. I would think the differences you will notice depend on how much you were drinking daily. I had 12-24oz daily. My energy level improved, and it helped me lose a few pounds too.
I took a slower approach to quitting though. I cut my consumption in half each week until I wasn't drinking anymore.
I like plain ice water. Most days that's all I drink. Maybe once a month I'll have tea, coffee, milk, or a glass of juice. |

I gave it up one year for Lent and never looked back. The first weeks were hard. I crave the carbonation, not the flavor of the soda. So I allowed myself some bubbly water a couple of times a week. Then I stopped doing that.
I drink lots of cold water and the more I drank, the more I crave it. If I need flavor, I use lemons, limes, oranges that I muddle in the bottom of my water bottle and then use all day long. I get new fruit each day. My favorite lately is limes with cranberries. I break them up in the bottom of the glass and fill with cold water. |

I stopped drinking soda about 20 years ago.
At first I drank flavored waters, but I've been drinking pretty much only water (and hot tea in the winter) for over a dozen years, now.
So you definitely get used to it. I love a nice crisp cold glass of water. I don't miss soda at all. Ever. |

I have been backing off of drinking so much by not having it in the house. I drink tea sometimes or Crystal Light if I want flavor. It has also helped to have a Brita pitcher in the fridge filled with cold water.

It's not easy! I drink a lot of tea (hot tea and iced tea). I'll still have ginger ale (diet) at dinner, but I'm just as happy with water instead.
I didn't see any results from *just* quitting soda, but I've really been watching what I eat and I am now seeing results. The My Fitness Pal app has been wonderful in helping me track my calories and exercise.

I put herbs or fruits in my water. But I love it just plain. And cold.
As for seeing results by cutting out soda, I saw none. It was a waste of time to cut them out so I drink soda and I get the same results as I did without it.

I drink various teas, flavored seltzer water, and even coffee. I still haven't given up soda completely yet, I've found phasing it out has been better for me. Now I have the equivalent of a small McDonald's soda every couple days. As I put different things in place of where I'd drink pop I like pop less and less. One of my favorite splurges is a raspberry passion iced tea from Starbucks. VERY yummy!
Lots of people think that giving up soda means plain water, you can do TONS of things to alter water to make it easier to palate. Crystal light is great in moderation, even the MIOs can be great in moderation. Tea is another great water enhancer. Think of water as a base then add flavors that won't add ridiculous amounts of sugar.

I drink plain water or unsweetened iced tea. I gave up diet soda over a year ago. The one thing I noticed is my stomach doesn't feel like it is stuffed anymore, which was probably due to the carbonation. |

What's wrong with boring? Seriously . Water is more of a palate cleanser and a refresher than something I look to for its flavor appeal.
There's so much flavor in the foods we eat, it's a nice break to have clean, cold water to drink.
I VERY rarely drink soda. The carbonation bothers my anymore. I will on occasion drink a Sobe Lifewater. And that's just when I want a little sweetness with no calories.

I put True Lemon in my water. They make other flavors besides lemon. This is a better and healthier alternative to Crystal Light and other products like that.
Ingredients: Crystallized Lemon [citric acid, lemon oil, lemon juice, ascorbic acid (Vitamin C)], Organic evaporated cane juice.
Contains Soy.

After I had a huge kidney stone, I gave up soda cold turkey. Best decision I ever made (okay, maybe that's an exaggeration, but I really feel horrible if I have soda nowadays.)
I drink water with lemon a lot, but most of the time it's just plain. You get used to it. |

I tried to give up diet soda, but then I gained weight! I missed drinking the soda and like you, I find water extremely boring. I wish I didn't, I know some people love water. I missed soda, and I was hungry all the time. The diet soda filled me up, so I eat less junk food when I drink soda.
I would have tried flavored waters, like Crystal Lite and the flavored carbonated water but they all had aspartame, and isn't that why we try to give up soda? So it's like water with lemon, etc. or nothing.
I try to limit the amount of soda I drink, but I am very good about having that instead of junk food.

You will see weight loss results from just giving up sodas. If you've been drinking regular, non diet sodas the reduction in sugar calories alone can equal a lot of weight loss.
If you've been drinking sugar free soda you can still lose weight because the artificial sweeteners cause water retention and other stuff
You'll feel so much better.
There is a Desani product in a tiny bottle that you add to water. It's only a couple drops and it gives just a little taste. It's really good.
Also, it takes a week or so to get used to just drinking plain water. After you're used to it you'll love it and wonder how you went so long not having it |

I gave up sodas and went to Crystal Light for a while and then developed acid reflux/heartburn. So I have to be very very careful about acid. I realized that each glass of water I drank, I was adding citric and other acids to it to make it "taste good". I gave up all additions to water and have really cut down on the acid reflux/heartburn. Now a glass of very cold ice water is all I need and I tend to carry around a large Tervis of it all the time.
That said, I still drink some milk, hot chocolate and a root beer every once in a while. And sneak a drink of the kiddos sodas here and there when I need a carbonation gulp.
I found also that I am now much more susceptible to caffeine effects. If I drink caffeine after about noon, I can't sleep at night and tend t get a bit hyper.

I gave up soda for Lent last year, I was drinking probably 1-2 20 oz diet Coke or diet Dr. Peppers per day, plus one at lunch. I mostly went to plain iced tea, and found my taste buds really changed over the few weeks I did it, because I would have never drank that unsweetened before.
I didn't notice any health or energy differences at all, and I went back to it after Lent was over.

What really helped me:
*get yourself a really fun cup. I like Tervis tumblers
*make sure you drink something else in place of the sodas so you stay hydrated
*reward yourself with something nonfood related, for example some new scrapbooking supplies if you can go a week without soda
*don't buy it, it's too tempting to have in the house
*tell your friends and family so they can help you with your new goal
*read some bad facts about soda to keep your motivation fresh |

I think the water will start to taste "less boring" after you've quit the soda for a while because I felt the same way a few years ago.
I drink decaf iced tea....and water. I quit the soda due to caffiene and sleep much better. I do have a cup or two of coffee prior to 9am. |

I stopped drinking anytype of soda about a year and a half ago and feel so much better. I start my day off with a 32oz cup of ice water. Throughout the day, I drink water and unsweet iced tea. One of the challenging places I found was the movies. I didn't want just plain water with my popcorn and HATE the tea that comes out of the drink fountains. So, now I carry a crystal light pack in my purse and buy a bottle of water at the movies.
I made a lot of changes to my diet and exercise to loose 70lbs in the last year. unfortunatly, recently I have found myself going back to some of my bad habits-like snacking after dinner. But, the one thing I haven't changed is drinking a soda. A few weeks ago I had a drink of DH Dr. Pepper and about gagged. Too sweet and the bubbling actually stung my throat. |

I drink a lot of unsweetened iced tea. Usually white or green tea with some kind of berry or citrus flavor. I get something more interesting than plain water, but also get the health benefits of the tea itself. When I really want something fizzy like a soda, I drink flavored unsweetened sparkling waters, usually the LaCroix brand, sometimes the Whole Foods brand. When I am having an "absolutely must have" craving for a real soda, I let myself have it but exercise portion control. And since I limit soda to a treat now, I've found that it doesn't take much at all to satisfy me. I'm good with splitting a 12 ounce bottle, or pouring off a juice glass worth from a larger fountain drink.

I gave up soda about a year ago. I just kept drinking less of it every day and replacing it with ice cold water. Once I got to the point where I was only drinking water instead of soda an amazing thing happened. I completely lost my craving for soda and craved instead the ice cold water. Ice cold water tastes absolutely delicious to me!
I do drink coffee every day but other than that it's water for me. At the beginning I did add real lemon juice sometimes to my water, but now I prefer it plain.

After I had a huge kidney stone, I gave up soda cold turkey. Best decision I ever made (okay, maybe that's an exaggeration, but I really feel horrible if I have soda nowadays.)
Yup, that exactly!
I did give soda up completely a few years ago. I felt so much better. I did loose some weight but not much. I felt so much better and I didn't crave all the sweet stuff.
Fast forward to last spring when my hubby's Grandma got hurt. We were spending so much time on the road and at the hospital and then the nursing home. It was so easy and cheaper to grab a soda on the run. I know lame excuse but it started it back up. I was so craving that fountain Dr. Pepper and it was only $1 for a huge one all summer long.
Big kidney stone over New Year's and no soda since. If giving up soda may keep me from having another one then that's what I'm going to do. I pretty much only drink water. I do drink a glass of orange juice in the morning. The last time I quit soda I went to sweet tea, this time I have just went straight to water and really now I want water all the time.

I've given up soda in the past and replaced it with water. I never saw any of the supposed benefits to my health, energy, skin or weight. I never got used to, liked or loved water. Zzzzzzzzzz. Didn't seem to quench my thirst any better and in fact, I had to force myself to drink it. And all drinking a lot of water did was make me spend a lot of time in the bathroom getting rid of it.
My sister OTOH had kidney stone issues and giving up soda helped her quite a bit.
So results vary. (Note: I didn't drink that much soda on a daily basis and I drank diet. My sister drank quite a bit of regular soda. So that may account for our different results.)

I gave it up about 1.5 months ago. I drink mostly plain ice water. I have noticed lots of great benefits-I sleep better, I have more energy, and I've lost close to 5 pounds. My skin looks better, too.
I think it just takes a while to adjust. I don't miss the sodas like I thought I would. I have found that I drink so much more if I make sure to keep lots of ice in my tervis tumbler.

I previously quit soda for a year and then this past fall went back to it! now, I am 2 weeks off of it and really don't miss it. I only used to drink it at lunch. Now, I drink water, coffee or sparkling flavored waters. I like the brand Sparkling Ice. It's carbonated so it feels like drinking soda. At restaurants, I just order water. Not a fan of teas.
I want to try flavoring my water with fruit. Looks good but wondering what it tastes like. |

I gave up soda a few years ago and lost 7 pounds! But just recently I tried it again and lost nothing. Must be the age?
The biggest reason I gave it up was that the caffeine reaked havoc on me. If I went with out (if I ran out or whatever) I would get huge migraines. I just hate being so dependent on it.
So now I'm a water girl too. Plain water is boring to me but I don't care for flavored water either. My kids love Meo though. You can find it by the kool aid.
My other little indulgence since I gave up soda is Bolthouse Farms Strawberry/Banana fruit smoothie drink. It's 100% fruit, no sugar added and it is YUMMY!

Oops, forgot to say that if you do give up soda you need to be prepared for those darned headaches! They are maddening! I am almost done with them but it's taken most of the month. My last soda was New Year's Eve. Something that has helped me with that is the migraine medicine with caffeine in it. That was easier for me because if I had allowed myself a little less soda each day it would have taken me about 2 weeks to allow myself to drink a little bit more each day & I'd be right back where I started. I'm one of those stop cold turkey or don't stop at all people. |

I don't put anything in my water but did find that I like it better at room temp. I can drink it down faster that way.
You could drink 100% fruit juice (no added sugar), coffee, green tea, or milk.
No I didn't really notice a difference.
Not sure how much soda you normally drink but be prepared to have physical withdrawal symptoms from stopping cold turkey. I was good for the first couple of days after but then got hit with brutal headaches that took about a week to get rid of completely. |

Didn't have time to read all the replies, but wanted to point out one thing.
I cannot do artificial sweeteners, so for me, a lot of "diet" drinks are off the table. In fact, I have less issues with full-sugar sodas.
I have found that Crystal Light has a few (very few) flavors that are "naturally sweetened". They have Stevia instead of aspartame and are 15 calories/serving instead of 5. Unfortunately, I'm finding it more difficult to find the Crystal Light with the Stevia. It must not have been as widely popular.

I rarely have soda these days. Don't want the chemicals in them inside if me.
So I drink a lot of herbal iced tea (I have an iced tea maker and do a lot of the Tazo Passion tea).
I also like carbonation so I'll drink La Croix, or Seagrams flavored water. The peach pear and coconut LaCroix are my faves.
I don't like a lot of sweet in my drinks though, especially when i want to quench my thirst. I'm an unsweetened tea, no sugar in my coffee girl all the time. So I don't miss the sugar about soda, I just like to have flavor.

24 years ago, when I was expecting my DD, I discovered that the taste of Dr. Pepper was upsetting my tummy....and I'd been a DP drinker all my life....after she was born, I went back to drinking DP, but after a couple of years, I realized that I didn't like how the inside of my mouth tasted or felt after drinking DP. So I quit.
This was before the advent of easily portable bottled water...or Tea in fast food restaurants...
I just couldn't stand drinking DP anymore. I lost 10 lbs. in a year without trying.
I haven't had one since. I drink plain water mostly....coffee (black) in the morning....plain tea in the summer....wine on occasion in the evening.
Best decision I ever made.
I will NOT ingest an artificial sweetener. I think that stuff is poison.

I gave up artificial sweeteners and sodas almost a year ago. I lost 11 pounds (don't know how much was the sodas, and how much was the artificial sweeteners). I drink lots of water - and also green tea - hot or iced, depending on the weather. I drink one cup of coffee in the am, then when it's cold outside, I may have 1-2 cups of decaf during the day, too.
I also had headaches almost every day before I quit these two things. I hardly ever have one now. |

Carbonation doesn't sit well in my tummy, so I haven't drunk soda since my late teens.
I really, really love the taste of water. So, I can't speak to spicing it it up, I just always have a glass nearby. I also find that tea is too dehydrating to drink as my water-replacement, so I only have a bit now and then.
I do have a wicked coffee habit, though

Kind of cheating but I put MiO in my water when i need some flavor. No calories, carbs, sugar, nothing.
If you truly want a tasty all natural drink I would suggest Bolthouse smoothies, they are somewhat pricey but amazing!
