I have several of these for quilting but have not used one for scrapping.

Mostly to keep the table clean. I don't use an exacto as often as I used to but every once in a while I will actually use it as a cutting mat. Then there is the whole, if I can't see the mat maybe I should clean up, thing. | |

I use mine with a steel edged ruler and a craft knife to trim small bits of paper, or without the ruler to get into areas when I fussy cut. I also have the old CM circle and oval maker blades (no idea what they are actually called) so I use it for that too. Basically to cut on.  | |

I use mine mostly for fussy cutting.
ETA it usually stays on my table unless I'm using my non stick craft mat for messy/heat embossing tech stuff |

I have several and use them all of the time. When I'm sewing, I use them for my rotary cutter. When I'm scrapping or card-making, I use my craft knife quite often. |

I do all of my cutting on one with a metal edge ruler and utility knife. I also occasionally use my MS large circle cutter. |

I have a big lime green one that matches my studio perfectly. I keep it on my table. It keeps the table clean and I do cut on it as well. Mostly fussy cutting with an Xacto knife, but I will occasionally pull out the quilting rulers as well. Sometimes I use art paper for paper crafts and I definitely use it then to cut down the large sheets of art paper. |

If I need to cut something very precisely that I do not trust with my trimmer, I use a very sharp exacto and a huge Making Memories mat. |

The other thing I use mine for even more often than cutting is measuring/aligning things. I can't believe I forgot to mention it earlier. Mine has a grid so I will often use it to get a rough measure before trimming a mat or I will line up the card bottom then line up the grid on my stamp press to make sure I am straight. Mine has angles too so I can gently stick elements or letters on the edge of a clear ruler, then line up with the grid and stick them down.
I used to have mine down always but kept getting adhesive on it so now it is leaning against my marker storage right in front of my workspace and my craft mat is down. When I need the cutting mat I just lay it down on top.

I use it with my rotary cutter and "Perfect Layers" - so-o-o much easier than a craft knife with those. |

Mine is always on my desk, mostly to keep the surface clean, but I find that I use the rules as guides a lot as well. |

I have the cm custom cutting system so my mat is always on my desk I also use it for straight lines and measuring stuff. |

I have a large quilting one that covers almost my entire desk. Off the top of my head I use it to keep the desk clean, occasional cutting with a large ruler, and lining things up with my T-Square. Plus, I like graphs/grids so I like how it looks on my desk. I have a couple of smaller sized ones. One is 5x7 or so. I use that for any fussy cutting. I move that between three work areas in my space. The other is the one Basic Grey made a few years back, so it's square and came with strong magnets. That remains on one work surface elsewhere in my space. It's used for fussy cutting or holding things down I don't want to get lost/rearranged. | |

Thanks for all of the replies.
I ended up clearing off my whole desk last night. It's an old oak desk from a university auction - I've had it for years and love it but it's huge. So I took advantage of your suggestions and now have my largest cutting mat on it like a blotter. It's gridded vertically, horizontally, and diagonally so I can really see the use in it.
I have a different one I'll use for cutting my quilt fabric. I rarely used the big one for that because it's cumbersome - so I am fine with it now on the desktop.
Ready to scrap now. Clean, organized desk. Photos in order. Highly motivated, thanks to the peas!
Now where is my dark chocolate?????? | |

Mine stays on the table all the time. It is great when I use my Creative Memories cutters or a craft knife. I also find the grid handy. |
