I love productivity tools - planners, apps, hacks, etc.

I have a hard time executing though ... it's a lot more fun to be distracted and chase rabbit trails than to buckle down and get to work (especially for boring, mundane work).

I just found a new app called "Carrot" that supposedly has the attitude of GlaDOS from Portal and treats your to do list accordingly. I haven't upgraded to iOS 6 yet though and it's required.

Meanwhile I found this you tube and it had a twist I've never considered:
Sumo app to do list hack

It's just 4 minutes. The cliff notes are that this guy keeps a running hourly log of how he spends his time as he knocks out the items on his to do list.

DH thought it was nuts but he has a compliant personality and he just digs in and works.

Anyway I downloaded Money Saving Mom's Daily Docket. It lets you edit it to add items and some headings of your own. I typed in my daily chores and added column headings "hourly work log" across the 3 bottom columns (thinking "morning", "afternoon" and "evening" and then saved it to my laptop.

I've been using it (and working) all day.

I guess the real test will be how it works day after day ...

Do you have any productivity tips to share?

I don't have a smart phone or i-pod, so I'm not familiar with apps.

I have done something similar to that guy in the video. It really does help to write what you have done during the day. It's quite motivating.

I liked his idea of placing the piece of paper and only looking at that one thing to do.

What exactly are hacks when it comes to productivity?

"hacks" is just a slang term ...

in the case of the video, the "hack" is adding the running log to the to do list.

I've heard in traditional time management classes that you should do that in order to find your leaks where you waste time.

I just never thought of doing that daily so the way I was using time would be in my face. It's a subtle thing but it's working wonders for me.

I think the first bit I accomplished was so inspiring, I just kept going.

I hope it keeps working!! I'm glad that works for you.

I still want to play with Carrot though!

Hmm, I love GLaDOS. I could use something like her snarky, painfully honest commentary to keep my butt on track. I'm going to check Carrot out .

Carrot is cute, and funny. It doesn't speak, though. I'll play with it some more to see if it's something I could use all the time. It's made for the iPhone, but fit just fine on my iPad.

The thing that made me hesitate about Carrot was having to reenter my daily chores each. That's my biggest struggle - the housework - ack!! Getting to level up, etc. sounded like fun though!

Turning chores into games is a big deal to me. My day starts with a race against the coffee pot while I put all the clean dishes away. If I beat it with a clean kitchen, the battle is already won.

I kinda miss the olden days if dialup Internet because I could see how much time I'd wasted online when I closed the connection. I will have to check out carrot, thanks for the tip.

Someone on here recommended the pomodoro method where you set a timer for 25 min an buckle down then get. 5 min break and after three rounds (I think) you take a longer break. I've used that as a motivator to get things done.
